On Lene during the Paddy Dolan Memorial Cup members of Meath River Rescue / Search & Recovery Unit were call into action. An Outboard Motor was lost in 15-20ft of water, and with-in 30 minutes the Search & Recovery team were out, and successful recovered the engine. Great stuff, and very reassuring that these highly trained people are just a call away if we have bother on the waterways.

Grilse and the last springers run Kylemore after rains

Nigel Rush reports that after nearly three weeks drought they got rain last week and at the weekend which improved the fishing there…

16 June: The grilse have arrived with some leftover springers and seven fish have been taken over the past few days ranging from 1.5lb to 10.25lb but mainly on the small side. The first of the grilse can be tiny and this year is proving no exception.

We should have water all week given that the forecast has promised sporadic rain all week.

Hidden away between the mountains of Connemara and the Atlantic ocean, the Kylemore Abbey fishery is a wild and beautiful place. Kylemore Abbey Fishery consists of the Kylemore Middle and Castle lakes, as well as part of the Upper Lough, with the five and a half kilometres of the Dawros river which enters the sea in Ballynakill bay.  Salmon and sea-trout run for a good proportion of the year to provide first class fishing on uncrowded waters.

The open panoramas of the lakes contrast with the intimacy of the river to give a variety of fishing combined with stunning scenery unrivalled anywhere in Ireland. Although offering an excellent chance of a fish for most of the season, you will find the real meaning of “a fish is a bonus” at Kylemore.

The River Lee drains a catchment of 484 square miles of which much is taken up by two large reservoirs. Salmon Angling is confined to an 8 mile stretch from Inniscarra dam to Cork city.

Lee Salmon Anglers Club

The Lee Salmon Anglers club was established in 1967. It was formed by a group of anglers interested in protecting and promoting the sport of salmon and trout angling on the river Lee. Day tickets available: http://www.leesalmonanglers.ie/

Inniscarra Fishery

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.

RIVER ILEN

10 salmon landed for the week, best 11lbs landed by a club angler on worms.

RIVER COOMHOLA

3 salmon landed for the week, best 10lbs landed by a club angler on worms.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Rain brings grilse to Delphi, sea trout expected soon

David McEvoy reports from the Delphi Fishery…

Weather conditions have definitely changed since my last update, with the rain finally arriving on the night of the 13thof June. We had 32mms that night and the river rose to 24. It was a little coloured as one would expect after such a long dry spell. Even though 24 was not high it looked like a huge flood, compared to -6. The 32mms was then added to on Friday night with 25.2mms, which put the river up to 50, which to any angler was indeed a beautiful sight. Air and water temperatures had also dropped. Water temperature is now between 12 and 13 degrees.

Finn Lough

There were two fish before the rain, both from the Turn Pool and both on Nymphs. Bertrand Fenart had one of 8lbs10ozs and Mark Corps had one of 9lbs10ozs. We have landed nine since the change in conditions. James Hewetson-Brown was first off the mark, on the 14th, with a good fish of 10lbs from Wrens Point on Finlough on a Silver Stoat, and old favourite of his father David, who sadly is no longer with us. Alan Dunlop followed this up in the afternoon with another, from Goughs on Finlough of 6lbs15ozs on a Collie Dog.

Our first grilse were landed the next day, the 15th. The first of these was a First ever for Duncan MacKenzie. The fish weighed in a 2lbs13ozs and was taken in the Whin Pool on a Collie Dog. James Hewetson-Brown had another grilse in the afternoon, also of 2lbs13ozs in the Bridge Pool on a Beaded Nymph. On Saturday Frazer had a nice grilse of 3lbs13ozs From Goughs on Finlough on a Cascade.

There were three landed yesterday morning. James Gould had a fish of 7lbs15ozs from Sligo Bay on Finlough, on a Willie Gunn. Margaret Downes had a lovely grilse of 4lbs3ozs from the Rock Pool on an Executioner. Andy Smith (a blast from the past) hasn’t lost his touch. He hooked a fish of approx. 6lbs in the Horseshoe and impressively landed it in Dynamite. The fish was taken on a Cascade. Finally, this morning Roxanne Davies had a small grilse of approx. 2lbs in the Rock Pool on a Collie Dog.

The river is now at 34 and there is some more broken weather over the next few days, which should keep water levels up till the end of the week at least. We should hopefully see more grilse entering the system over the next few days and of course the first sea trout should start appearing within a fortnight.
