Early mornings and late evenings fish best for the Drowes

Monday 11st  to Sunday 17th June 2018.

The Drowes ran at very low levels all week. On Monday the gauge read 0.32m and the river steadily fell and by the ‘end of play’ on Sunday the gauge read only 0.29m! Despite the bright conditions and low summer levels the river continued to produce salmon. Early mornings and late evenings brought the best chances. Given here are some of the catches taken from the fishery catch register.

On Monday, Patrick O’Malley recorded a 6lb grilse caught on prawn from the Sea Pools.

On Sunday, Virgilio Alonso recorded 2 salmon weighing 6 & 8lb caught. From the 7th to the 14th, a visiting French party reported 4 salmon caught weighing from 2 to 8lb, 3 on fly and 1 on worm from various pools.

At the time of writing, the heavy rain of Tuesday has caused the river to rise to 0.34m but a bigger rise would be very desirable.

Stefaan Soete from Belgium with one of his nice Pike.

Stefaan, Tom and Wim from Belgium were over for a week’s Pike fishing and decided to use Melview Fishing Lodge as their base, using both soft and hard baits the week started slow for them due to the weather and the week started with mainly smaller Pike and some good Perch. As the week went on things began to improved for them. This was the guys first visit to Ireland and they had a great time. The guys were just up beat all the time and we had some good laughs during their say. Thanks guys and hope to see you again soon.

Owenmore getting sea trout in the lakes

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

19 June: We have had a heavy mist in the area for the past few days which has resulted in beautiful fishing water. The seatrout are reaching the lakes. They have been caught with sealice on them. There was too much wind to fish the White Lake but the other lake Finnertys would be more shaded and fished reasonable well.

It was difficult fishing in the river yesterday with the strong wind and there were a lot of flies lost. Couple of Seatrout caught in the river and a grisle. More rain today and this will be the end of it for a while.

Charter boat anglers enjoy great fishing from Portrush

Evan McGovern was in touch to say he had an outstanding weekend of fishing last week onboard Predator Charters out of Portrush.  Evan and his pals had 30+ specimen spurdogs, 2 specimen skate, a couple of tope close to specimen and plenty more fish.  It’s hard to beat a day on the water when the  weather is great and the fishing is constant.

Tourist anglers enjoy bass and shad fishing

Emma Stanley reports on some successful fishing trips to Tipp and Waterford…

Twaite Shad:

The run of twaite shad is coming to an end for this year and 2 Anglers from Dublin had a good days fishing along the old bridge area of Carrick on Suir during late May.  The numbers in the area are reported to be making a recovery and Anglers spoken to were happy with the numbers caught.

Sea Bass:

2 Bass Anglers from Dublin were encountered recently on Kilfarrasy Beach.  The anglers explained how they came down to fish the south coast for several days.  Both men were happy with the fishing in the area and had recently fished the Cork coast also stating that there was plenty of bass fishing along the south Coast of the country and that they had not been disappointed with their fishing trip.

Bio Security: As always, we would kindly like to remind all who use Irelands watercourses to please use appropriate biosecurity measures for themselves so to help prevent the spread of invasive species in and out of the water.

Water Safety: The Carrick staff would kindly like to remind all about the importance of using Life Jackets in and around water as they really do save lives. Adequate Flotation devices should always be worn and it especially sets a template regards water safety where younger Anglers are present.

“Take only memories, leave only footprints”. The Carrick staff would like to ask all who are using the water courses in the area to be mindful of littering and to please use bins provided or take home their rubbish.

Good trout fishing on Suir in upper reaches

Emma Stanley from our Carrick on Suir base reports on the local trout fishing…

A member of Thurles Suir and Drish District Anglers reported plenty of large trout on the Upper reaches of the Suir and its tributaries. Anglers reported catches of 2lbs to 4.5lbs.

Trout have been slow to get going along the Carrick on Suir area even with hatches of mayfly & black knat on the water. Anglers state however, that conditions for trout fishing remain good in the Carrick region.
