Angling Guide and guesthouse owner Kevin Lyons reports from Melview Lodge:

John and Len with a few nice Tench
John and Len with a few nice Tench

Len Riding and friend John Seeley from Merseyside were over to Ireland and Melview Lodge for their annual fishing trip, the weather at the start of their holiday was not the best for fishing. With the weather very bright and flat calm by mid day they decided on 04:15 starts in the morning to try and target the fish while feeding on their prebait that they had prepared the night before.

The first few days at the venue produced a few Bream, skimmers and lots of Roach to feeder tactics. On the venue they were fishing there was some evidence that the Bream were ready to spawn, so it was decided to fish at a closer distance to try and target the Tench. This proved to be productive for them as they managed some very nice Tench, Skimmers and Roach.  Kevin said, I was determined to try and get them a nice catch of Bream before returning home. So it was out with the big mixing bath for the prebait and after onto the boat to put it in at a venue I thought would produce for them, as it was their last day I decided to have a fish with them that day and brave the 03:30 start.

What a day it turned out to be for them producing 272 lb of Bream and we never included the Roach. It was also a good day for me catching 104 lb of Bream. A good week and great company, thanks guys and see you next year.

All fish returned unharmed.

Marty Smith enjoyed a days fishing on Mount Dalton near Rathconrath before heading back to Manchester. Conditions were flat calm and very little fly life. Still fish were on the move and we had some lovely trout pushing the 2lbs mark on a selection of wet flies.

Lough Lene fishing very well

Mick Flanagan reports on the fishing on Lough Lene…

Owen McEnteggart
Owen McEnteggart

Lough Lene is still producing some cracking rainbows with Owen McEnteggard having a fish just under 4lbs, and his pal Val Wynne had fish on dry Olives over 3lbs. I also had a few crackers on Nymphs, and Marty Smith had a super fish 4lbs 1oz, on wet fly.

The calm conditions early last week seem to suit the fish and it was surprising to see many Green Peters hatching on one particular day. Normally you would associate the Peters with the months of July and August when we stay late out on the lakes for the Murrough and Peter hatches.

Some excellent coarse fishing along lower Shannon

Emma Stanley tells us that anglers were reporting excellent fishing around Shannon Harbour with one angler landing over 80lbs of fish on Wednesday last week. Water levels are low for the time of year but anglers are very satisfied with the fishing.

Fishing on Pallas Lake has been slow so far, this year but good crowds are expected for June bank holiday weekend.

Areas around Cloghan, Co. Offaly have been receiving more visitors in recent weeks with positive reports coming back regards stocks in the area.

New Angling stands that have been recently installed have seen a very positive response from both visiting and local anglers in Portumna and the knock-on effect is higher numbers visiting the area. Overall, reports have been positive from areas spoken about and feedback is generally positive.

Good pike fishing reported from Meelick, Banagher, Pallas

Emma Stanely reports on the pike fishing in the Lower Shannon area…

Fine sunny dry days, evenings have been breezy but conditions were good with little to no rain apart from Saturday with heavy showers from early morning which will hopefully improve angling in general.

Meelick, Co. Galway, has been very good for Pike fishing over the week with one Angler reporting 89 Pike landed over 5 days and coarse anglers are doing well with large numbers of Roach, Hybrids and Bream encountered in the area.

There was good Pike angling in the Banagher area and feedback from Anglers has been very positive, all alluded to great fishing with fish up to 83 cm being caught.

Pallas Lake has been showing great potential for future Pike fishing as sizes are up and there is a good abundance of stock with fish from 9lbs to 13lbs reported.

Trout fishing hard work on Melvin

Monday 22nd  to Sunday 28th May 2017.

Lough Melvin was hard work for trout it seems last week and reports tell of very sparse mayfly hatches. Weather conditions were very bright for most of the week and the fishing hard. It seems the only trout fishing sport that was to be had was with Sonaghan over the deep water drifts.

Very low water on the Owenea

Monday 22nd  to Sunday 28th May 2017.

It back to low water levels once again on the Owenea this week! The gauge never read higher than 0.13 metres and the gauge average for the week was a low at 0.12m. Only 11 visiting rods fished for the week and we only have a record of 1 salmon caught. This was Michael McCrory’s 8lb salmon caught and released on a fly from beat 7 on Sunday.
