Tough fly fishing for pike but Lene trout liking lures for Midland Angling

Mick Flanagan of Midlands Angling and Shooting has been fishing hard this week, for both trout and pike.

Early in the week, Mick and old pal Frank had some lovely fishing on Lough Lene, where the trout were active and hitting lures hard over deeper water.

Later in the week, Mick’s pal James Murray returned from New York once again to target pike on the fly. Unfortunately though, his few days of pike fishing got off to a slow start, as the guys had just a few jacks with no sign of a bigger fish at all during a long day on the water. Any fish that followed the flies or lures were just plucking at them and not interested in hitting them hard. One pike that was seemingly hungry was the one that took a bite at the one decent fish that James landed!

A decent fish for James

Good ray fishing at Fahan for Carrick anglers

Carrick Beach & Rockers made the trip west to Donegal to fish the well-known ray venue of Fahan beach last week for the 6th leg of their monthly master angler league.

7 members plus a guest angler braved the horrendous weather that was mentioned during the week and that the venue would be full off freshwater. So our surprise we arrived to a flat calm sea and pleasant weather. Peg draw done at 12pm and we all made our way to the pegs to get set up for 1pm start.
First casts away and within 20 minutes the rays made their presence known all falling to mackerel baits apart from Jonah who somehow managed to pick his up on a ragworm.
Fish where coming in steady until the tide run stopped and over low tide not much happened apart from 2 mackerel making an appearance to George and Jonny.
Once the tide started to turn the fish started to slowly return and Graeme finally managed a fish coming up to the last hour when his rid near went for a swim with some of us at the top of the beach thinking a tope had picked him up but no was a thornback ray thinking it was a tope lol.
Lines up at 6pm with Jonny pulling a ray on the last cast and Rein with a monster spider crab.

Rare fish among good catches in Galway Bay

Skipper John Fleming reports that the past week or so has seen reasonable fishing when conditions allowed.

“Some dirty days at sea but all in all some good fishing. A lot of wrasse on the evening trips with metal jigs. They hit so hard this way. Plenty of pollock on the local ground and on the offshore reefs.
Species wise its been quiet enough but had this very rare red band fish during the week to a baited feather. Nice one to add to the list!”

Good mix of species in west Clare

Anglers aboard the Clare Dragoon have enjoyed some good fishing of late, with a mix of whitefish on offshore reefs, when the weather permitted, and ray, bull huss and tope in the Shannon Estuary when sheltered fishing was the preferred option. Spurdogs have also been plentiful, with these and bull huss well into double figures giving good sport.

Bull huss

One spurdog had an unfortunate end, when somethign much larger, with very sharp teeth, intercepted it on the way up, leaving nothing but bits of spurdog sliced almost into steaks! A large porbeagle shark, perhaps, or…. ?

Sliced and diced!

Ballisodare seeing grilse caught every day

Daniel Cozzo releasing his 3rd fish of the day

Ballisodare Fishing Club report…

Fishing

The spring run of salmon at Ballisodare is essentially over for this season in Ballisodare. Numbers through the counter to end of May held up well with over 300 migrating upstream and this number is augmented by many more arriving during the first week of June when the rains arrived. Over the past two seasons approximately 800 springers have migrated upstream without being killed due to our catch and release policy until end of May. In line with our conservation policy, from June onwards, our individual members are restricted to killing a maximum of five fish for the remainder of the season. Our estimate is that this policy will result in no more than 3.5% of the overall run being killed this season and therefore 96.5% of the run will be available for spawning in the upper reaches.

In line with our Spawning Rejuvenation policy, sites have already been identified for works in August and September 2025 which will entail the deployment of over 300 tons of gravel into spawning streams in addition to raking of existing gravel areas.

Over the past two weeks, an average of four to five fish per day were caught with a release rate of approximately 30%.

Electronic Water Quality Monitoring Sondes deployed.

As a result of the Fish Kill last season of over 1000 adult salmon, Ballisodare Fishery with the support of Sligo ATU’s Environmental Department and LAWPRO, has over the past two weeks deployed two Electronic Water Quality Sonde Stations, one located above the Falls in fresh water and another downstream of Uisce Eireann’s Waste Water Treatment Plant in the Estuary, which is licensed by EPA to discharge twice daily into the estuary at high tide. These sondes take water quality measurements every 15 minutes and the data is transmitted to a central database with immediate alarms if any water quality parameters are breached. Measurements include Water Temperature, Dissolved oxygen, Ammonia NH3 and NH4, Nitrates, Turbidity and pH etc.

Although results and data availability are at an early stage, interesting data indications are already evolving. We will be publishing this valuable data in due course. The Online Data will also be available to IFI and Sligo ATU in the future.

First grilse off Lough Currane

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane where the level was low and the wind blew hard at times…

June 11, 2025. Unfortunately, there are no reports of any catch and release salmon or sea trout from Currane anglers today. The weather conditions at Lough Currane were moderate to fresh South winds, veering SSE, S, SSE, accompanied by good cloud cover. For tomorrow’s weather forecast, you may want to consider a recommended bed and breakfast. Please refer to the Tobervilla House video link; https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1EpLtg8F6U/  it   provides an excellent review. Yesterday’s weather recorded 0.4mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 16.9°C, and 4 hours and 5 minutes of sunshine.

June 12, 2025. The Currane anglers experienced another slow day in the C&R Salmon and Sea Trout department. This demonstrates the significant patience of the anglers. Additionally, my ink levels are as low as the lake’s water levels. Now, we turn to the Currane weather chart: variable gentle to moderate wind Southeast veering South. Yesterday’s weather included 0.6mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 17.8°C, and 1 hour and 2 minutes of sunshine.

June 13, 2025. No activity was reported from the anglers at Waterville fishery on Currane. The wind was moderate from the SSW, then shifted to the South, with good cloud cover. The previous day’s weather recorded a maximum air temperature of 18.8°C, with 7 minutes of sunshine.

June 14, 2025. Despite Lough Currane’s low water levels, angler Tim experienced significant success while trolling with his gillie, as he managed to catch a fine 5-pound grilse. However, the other boats on Currane did not report any notable activity. Weather conditions for Currane anglers included gentle to moderate winds from the WNW and reasonable cloud cover. The previous day’s weather saw a maximum air temperature of 17.9°C and six hours and three minutes of sunshine.

June 15, 2025. Anglers at Currane encountered a challenging day with minimal activity observed across all regions. The Wild Salmon and Sea Trout appeared relaxed, resulting in limited opportunities for successful fishing. The weather conditions today included a gentle westerly wind and intermittent periods of cloud cover. According to yesterday’s weather report, there was no recorded rainfall, the maximum air temperature reached 17°C, and there were a total of 8 hours and 7 minutes of sunshine.

June 16, 2025. Only two Currane boats were operational today, and according to the latest updates, there are no reports from the Catch and Release (C&R) Salmon and Sea department. Moving forward to the weather conditions for Currane: moderate southwest winds, occasionally variable, with reasonable cloud cover at times. Yesterday’s weather report recorded 1.3 mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 16.7°C, and 4 hours of sunshine.

June 17, 2025. There were no reports from the C&R Currane anglers today. Consequently, we refer to the Currane weather chart, which indicates the following conditions: gentle variable west winds shifting to WNW and NW, with good weather in the morning followed by moderate cloud cover in the afternoon. Yesterday’s weather recorded 0.1mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 17.5°C, and 1 hour and 9 minutes of sunshine.
