Well Known specimen hunter, Tony Tait reports on sea angling in the Aghada area in east Cork
Rosies sea angling club was formed in 2007 it is based in Rosies Pub Lower Aghada Cork it is on the eastern side of Cork Harbour.
We launch and retrieve our boats from the private slip at Lower Aghada Tennis & Sailing club, we have local members and some from further afield travelling from Dundalk, Kilkenny and Wales.
Our recent club competition was on Sunday 10th June 2012 it was a fall back date for 3rd June 2012 which was cancelled due to bad weather.
Only 3 boats and 6 anglers took part normally we would have 5 or 6 boats at least 10 anglers.
This was an individual competition 5 x Species Limit, this means only 5 x cod, 5 x lsd etc catch and release.
Each angler can catch 5 of every species in size witnessed by another crew member and released, and then mark his individual score card.
The only fish anglers have to bring back to the weigh in are their biggest flat and heaviest round (Conger & Ray do not count)
(All rays caught are to be identified & witnessed by another competing boat then released.)
The weather Forecast Easterly winds Force 2 in the morning veering southerly then south westerly 8 mph.
The forecasters got the weather right it was a real pleasure to be out at sea with the sun warming your body, fishing was patchy but everyone managed to catch and record a respectable score.
My wife Sue and I headed to our usual marks around the smiths but found the fishing very slow we then proceeded to the ling rocks area where we managed to pick up a few fish and a Specimen Pollack weighing 6.2kg (13lb 10oz) which is our Catch of the Week
1st Ray Donnelly 1075 points & 14 x species.
2nd Martyn Rayner 870 points & 14 x species.
Heaviest Flat Megrim 0.50 kg Martyn Rayner
Heaviest Round Pollack 6.20 kg Tony Tait
Winning Junior 340 points 8 species Abigail Donnelly, See Photo.
Screaming Reels managed to add to his total species catch now on 21 species for 2012.
We hold The Martin O’Brien Memorial Festival on the August Bank Holiday weekend every year this is an open 2 day small boat Species fishing competition.
