Mc Dermottroe with two trout at 1.5 lbs. and 1.75 lbs. respectively. However, one of the best trout for the week was caught by Paul Cullen who had a cracker of 5.5 lbs. on a Green Peter.

Bass after blues for small boat anglers in Cork Harbour

Nice evening on the water!

Jim Clohessy reports that the bass fishing has been very hit and miss this year and is still waiting for things to pick up since the season reopened last June…

22 July: Out yesterday and had a chance to reacquaint myself with bass.

My Best bass of the year so far!
What a scrapper, real dirty head down sort of fight….Superb! Black Minnow 25g 120 did the business
68cm

15 July: There was just the right break in the weather to make a run with Kevin Murphy in a BellaVista Hotel Raider Cuddy. We fished some reefs first and then headed inshore to chase some bass. It was a cracking day from start to finish.

pollack
Beautiful conditions offshore on the reefs. Pollack were not too bad in terms of size!

We used all manner of soft lures. Illex Nitro Slim Shad 180 did very well for me as did the reliable Black Minnow.

A decent Blue for Paul Drea

09 July: Today’s trip was a blast! We were watching the smallest break in the wind pattern. Paul Rea, Sean Aherne and myself ran in Paul’s Warrior 175 “Right Catch 2”. The conditions suited a trip for shark. We spent the first part of the trip chastising the pollack on the ling rocks, the size was small. Once we set our drift for the blues we had consistent shark action. Plenty of sharks about, we were sight fishing for a finish. Good craic all round!

Pike to 93cm at Lough Allua as fish move a bit deeper

pike
A good pike in the boat ready to be released

Greg Latour of Tir na Spideog reports on the pike fishing at Lough Allua…

21 July: I only had a few hours to spare today, but as I haven’t fished Lough Allua for 9 days I had to give it a go. We had a good bit of action. There were 4 pike landed (77cm, 85cm, 91cm and 93 cm) and of course the biggest got away on the way to the boat.

Tir na Spideoga Fishing Lodge is situated on the shores of Lough Allua, about 5km from Inchigeelagh Village, overlooking a narrow but long water system, also called the ‘ Inchigeelagh lakes’. Lough Allua ranks amongst the top pike fishing waters of Ireland, regularly producing pike of 20 and 30 lbs. and still it is one of the least known pike venues on the island .

German anglers delighted with West Cork cod fishing

20lb 8oz Ling
Skipper David Edwards with a 20lb 8oz Ling

David Edwards, skipper of charter boat Tigger, reports that they have had good ground fishing and are looking forward to trying for some of the more unusual shark species this summer…

Chris Evans with a good inshore Coalie
Chris Evans with a good inshore Coalie

Cod fishing has been excellent over the last few weeks, a party of German anglers came to Ireland for the first time instead of their usual Norway or Sweden trips and over three days caught a greater total weight than they have in the last 15 years of fishing in the Nordic countries. Granted they never hit any specimen fish here but the quality and numbers more than made up for it. Although starting to tail of now we are still pulling several in every trip between 5lb – 12lb with best of the season so far going 22lb.

20lb 8oz Ling
Skipper David Edwards with a 20lb 8oz Ling

There is great sport with inshore Coalie fishing with some fish nudging double figures. Ling have been more plentiful than recent years and best so far went 20lb 8oz on a inshore mark.

Shark fishing has been impacted by the weather but the trips we have made have seen plenty coming to the boat with several passing the magic 100lb mark. There are some long range trips sharking trips planned in August with some very experienced shark anglers and hopefully we will have something to report from then. Two good size Threshers were caught off West Wales on the weekend and with Mako’s also appearing again in recent seasons it gives us even more reason to get offshore

Tigger is a purpose built Procharter 31 angling boat, powered by a 330HP diesel engine and equipped with all necessary safety equipment. Reef and ground drift fishing is generally the most productive method with the potential to catch in excess of 20 species if you adapt your lures and baits accordingly. From mid June through to October it’s usually possible to target the blue shark fishing that is predominatly between 10-15 miles off the estuary.  All sharks are released and recent seasons have seen larger species such as mako and threshers being sighted more frequently, so who knows what will come in 2014…

Grilse arrive in good numbers at Kylemore

Fishery manager Nigel Rush reports that the grilse run appears to be finally underway at Kylemore over the last few days. Good water has encouraged fish to run, and anglers are encountering grilse, some to very good size. Over the last few weeks the fishery was averaging 8 fish a week with little rod effort, but over the 9 days to the 20th they had 17 fish for just 21 rod-days, and numbers for the season are so far well up on last year.

Geoffrey Fitzjohn had a good day on Tuesday, landing 3 fish through the Upper and Middle River, lost 3 and turned as many again. This was followed yesterday by Neil Spellacy, who landed 3 fish, including 2 of 7lbs and a fish of 4lbs, and lost another fish, all from the Middle River beat. Two fish were released and one kept as it was a stray ranched fish from another river.

I stopped at the river yesterday and saw perfect water levels, so with grilse running it looks like the place to be. To book fishing, contact Nigel at 087 9580702.

Broken weather provides good angling on Mask as World Cup fever builds

Ronan Cusack reports that the heavy rain over the past 7 days has raised water levels on Lough Mask significantly. Any anglers who may not have seen their boat recently may be advised to do so.

As World Cup fever builds, recent reports indicate that angling this week has been mixed, depending on weather conditions. Fly hatches have been good with plenty of sedge and good hatches of late mayfly around the southern end over the weekend.

Andrew Boyd from Galway fished with Stan McCart, Northern Ireland on Sunday and they finished with 2 trout for the day (best fish 1.75lbs). Regular Mask anglers John Brennan and Kieran Newman from Longford fished Mask in torrential rain on Saturday last and they had 3 keepable fish and a few undersize for the day (best fish 1.5lbs, all returned). Brian McInerney and Darin Gardiner from Co. Clare fished out of Dringeen on Sunday and they had 4 fish on a combination of wets and dries (best fish 3lbs). John Burke from Tourmakeady has a group of UK anglers staying with him at the moment and they have an average of 2 trout per day over the past 2 weeks on wet flies.

The outlook for the coming week is for more broken weather, so it looks like an exciting build up to the 2015 World Cup.

Ronan also guides on Mask and can be contacted at [email protected]

Late mayfly and sedges providing good sport on Corrib

Declan Gibbons reports that angling on Corrib during the week gone by saw an improvement in trout angling with plenty of mayfly and sedges hatching. On Sunday, Oughterard Anglers hosted their youth competition, the Kevin McQuinn Cup which saw Shane Joyce catch 2 trout to take first prize with a weight of 1.4kg. Also in Oughterard Kevin Molloy of Baurisheen Guiding & Boat Hire (087-9604170) reported an improvement in fishing. On Friday last visiting French angler Mr. Lester landed 3 trout for a half day’s trolling. Kevin himself enjoyed good wet fly fishing on Saturday landing 3 trout. Declan McLoughlin and friend enjoyed excellent wet fly fishing, boating 4 trout with the best hitting the scales at 4lbs.

Staying in the same area Basil Shields of Ardnasillagh Lodge (091-552550) reported excellent angling with an excellent second hatch of mayfly to match. On Saturday and Sunday Basil himself and Northern Ireland angler Colin Wright from Belfast had great sport, catching 24 trout on wet and dry mayflies, with the best fish being 3lbs 9oz. Michael Murphy, Limerick also had good fishing on Saturday landing 3 trout with the best fish being 2lbs. On Sunday Shannon angler Glen O’Connell had a similar day landing 3 trout with the best fish being 1.75lbs.

In the Cornamona area Tom Doc Sullivan (087-6113933) guided visiting Australian angler James Brookes from Melbourne, with James landing 2 trout on dry mayflies, best fish 1.5lbs. Tom also reported a moderate hatch of mayfly in the area. In the Greenfields area Clare father and Son Frank Guilfoyle and Paddy enjoyed excellent fishing on Thursday, boating 9 trout (5 released). Carl Clinton from Meath had an enjoyable weekend dapping grasshoppers, landing 4 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday with the best fish nudging 3lbs. Also in the Greenfields area Tuam angler Sean Naughton had 1 trout on Sunday for 1.5lbs on wet fly.

Larry McCarthy of Corrib View Lodge (087-9135222, www.corribangling.com) reported a slightly quieter week due to unsettled weather, however guiding Belfast duo Stephen Lusty and Pip Arthur on Monday on Lough Carra they had good sport, landing 6 trout on dry olives – best fish 2lbs. Larry himself had 2 trout on Wednesday on Corrib on dry sedges, both fish in the 1.5-2lbs bracket. Larry is looking forward to settled weather for sedge fishing and reed smut in the coming weeks ahead.

Martin Kinneavy was also in touch to advise that the TAFI Connacht Cup Youths competition which was due to held on Saturday last had to be postponed due to inclement weather, and is rescheduled for Saturday, August 8th, fished from the Carrick shore. Clubs must be affiliated to TAFI, and entry details are available from Eugene Nolan on 085 2423062.
