More windy weather for Currane’s anglers

currane

Vincent Appleby is back again this week reporting from Lough Currane…

13 February 2025 The anglers were driven off Lough Currane early due to strong southeast winds, with speeds reaching up to 80 km/h and an average speed of 45 km/h. This was accompanied by a significant amount of rain, as evidenced in the attached photograph. Yesterday’s weather included a rainfall total of 1.8 mm, a maximum air temperature of 9.1°C, and no recorded sunshine.

14/2/2025 Calmer waters on Lough Currane on this bright and sunny Valentine’s Day. No Hen Salmon were caught or released, and the same applies to my Noble gentlemen the Salmon. You could say the Lough Currane anglers didn’t have the Valentines Day touch.  The wind was gentle from the South and veered SSW, SSE, SW, S, SSE, SE. Yesterday’s weather included 2.4mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 10.2°C, and no sunshine.

15/2/2025 Just one out manipulating their skills today and I quote www.fishingwithdom.com No joy just the lonesome boatman and his client. Wind variable SSE veered SE followed by good cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 10.7mm, maximum air temperature 13.2c, amount of sunshine 6hr.1minute.

16/2/2023 The Currane anglers had another wild day and in the words of one Currane angler and I quote, Not out too bad, with gusts up to 54km/h average speed 33km/h and overcast all day, followed by heavy rain at times. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 0.7mm, maximum air temperature 13.0°C, amount of sunshine 0.1minute.

18/2/2025 The weather conditions at Lough Currane were challenging for anglers. There was a fresh to strong SSE wind with an average speed of 44 km/h to 52 km/h and strong gusts ranging from 65 km/h up to 80 km/h, with an average gust speed of 78 km/h. The sky was overcast throughout the day, accompanied by light misty rain at times. The forecast does not look promising for the rest of the week. Yesterday’s weather included 17.1 mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 12.1°C, and no sunshine.

19/2/2025 On 19 February 2025, the Currane anglers were unable to proceed due to strong, gusty southerly winds, with average speeds of 44 km/h and gusts reaching between 65 km/h and 70 km/h, accompanied by heavy showers. The previous day’s weather recorded 11.4 mm of rainfall, a maximum air temperature of 12.4°C, and 1 hour of sunshine.

Sea Trout – Catch and release only

Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.

The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-

  • the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
  • the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
  • the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay

FLEKSI

A new online survey has been developed by IFI for the Currane catchment to gather anglers’ knowledge – the survey method called FLEKSI was developed by IFI to help give an insight into the status of the fishery. Currane Anglers are needed for Citizen Science survey to examine fish stocks

For more information on the daily conditions, all the craic and news be sure to check out Vincent Appleby’s Salmon and Sea Trout blog for regular reports with back dates, petitions, public consultation notices, readers letters and videos and more of what’s happening on Currane.

Keith McDonnell’s cold Corrib start finds streamer success

corrib dog

Keith McDonnell of Impact Fishing headed to Lough Corrib last weekend following an invitation from guide Jasper Mathews to fish the opening day.

From the outset it was streamers only. Despite the forecast the there was only a gentle breeze but it was still chilly and the water temperature was hovering below 5°C.

But the diligent anglers under the watchful gaze and expert direction of Kali soon found success. The first fish of the trip fell to Jasper and it wasn’t long ’til Keith also had a tug though his fish twisted off soon after.

A very welcome trout

They fished on til lunch with the cold adding to their hunger. Physically and mentally fortified the trio headed out again with a change of flies and some faster sinking lines and ended the day with another fish. A great result of a cold, slow day. Tough night on the beach for the Ulster Krakens

The Ulster Krakens SAC headed to White Rocks Beach in Portrush last weekend for the second round of their Master Angler competition. Some club members were called into action early, as a family were struggling with a flat tyre in the carpark, and they helped get them back on the road again.

Unfortunately, that was as much action as some of the anglers got, as fishing turned out to be very slow once they got into the fishing. There were a number of decent sea trout gobbling up baits, but they don’t count under IFSA rules, and were returned without any points being accrued.

Nice sea trout, but unfortunately, not a counter

So a couple of bass for Fra Mahoney was the highlight of the evening’s fishing, with flounder, turbot, plaice and whiting making up the rest of the catches, as many anglers struggled to put points on the board. Lines were pulled in at 10pm, by which time Raymond McCann had taken 5 counters to give him top place with 123 points.

Full results are as follows:
1st Raymond McCann with 5 fish and 1 under for 123 points
2nd Ally Nicholl with 4 fish and 2 under for 116 points
3rd Gavin Mahaffy with 4 fish and 1 under for 100 points
4th fra mahoney with 3 fish and 1 under for 98 points
5th Pamela Stewart 3 fish for 77 points

Newbridge Pike Anglers finally off the mark for 2025

Worth the wait for Newbridge Pike Anglers

The Newbridge & District Pike Anglers had to wait a while to get going in 2025, as their scheduled January outing had to be postponed due to clashes with other events. As a result, the 28 members who turned out were raring to go, and it was a nice mix of old hands and new members looking to get the year off to a good start.

The weather was looking promising at the start of the competition, but at around 11 o’clock, a wave of heavy rain came through, coupled with strong winds, which threatened to put a dampener on things. Luckily, the pike were in a taking mood, with 145 fish being netted, which meant that many anglers were too busy catching fish to care too much about the weather. Some decent fish were landed, including four doubles, the best of which was a 19.13 fish caught by Stephen Hunter. That fish helped him to the overall prize on the day.

Full results as follows:

1st Stephen Hunter 19.13hf 40.05 bag
2nd Kevin Foley 6.7 hf 78.03 bag
3rd Ray Collopy 5.2 hf 76.05 bag
2nd heaviest fish David Quinlivan 15.1 hf 50.06 bag
3rd heaviest fish Liam O’Connor 11.7 hf

Ardee Pike Anglers hold Buddy Martin Memorial Cup competition

32 members of the Ardee Pike Anglers hit the banks for their Buddy Martin Memorial competition at the weekend, and the great turnout was matched by the pike, who also turned out in good numbers on the day. 170 fish were landed in total, which is a pretty healthy figure, and seven of those fish were doubles. It was a close-run thing in the end, with Robbie McShane’s 62lb 8oz bag just pipping Danny Reilly, who had a final tally of 61lb 4oz. But at least Danny managed to take the heaviest fish prize, as his 15lb pike was the best fish of the day.

Full Results:
1st Robbie McShane 62lb08
2nd Danny Reilly 61lb04
Joint 3rd were Eugene McCabe and Joe McParland 44lb14
Heaviest fish
1st Danny Reilly 15lb
2nd Tommy Mooney 12lb14
3rd Marty Lawlor 10lb14
Best Junior
1st Fionn McKenna 14lb03

Leinster Coarse Anglers wrap up their pairs competition on the Royal Canal

The Leinster Coarse Fishing Federation drew their pairs competition to a close at the weekend, fishing their final event on the Royal Canal after the original date was cancelled due to stormy weather. Judging from the photos, some very nice bream were taken, and a few early-season tench also made it into anglers’ keepnets. The results on the day saw Nicky Harrison and Bob Hulme take the top prize, and they also cemented their position in the overall league standings, taking that title as well.

Full results as follows:

MATCH RESULTS
1st Nicky Harrison & Bob Hulme.
2nd Sean Ward and Leo Aungier.
3rd Brian O’Donoghue & Jack Langan.

OVERALL RESULTS.
1st Bob Hulme & Nicky Harrison.

Fish Tales has outing with Outgoing Pikers

Pike angling guide Chris Scally of Fish Tales had his hands full at the weekend with a couple of members from the Irish Outgoing Pikers, Wally Geoghan and son Alex. It was a day of craic and laughs from the start, and the lads had to keep their spirits up, as they were faced with some pretty lousy weather. Luckily, the pike were obliging enough during the day, and while no monsters were landed, they did boat nine pike, including a 98cm fish which beat Alex’s PB.

Baggers wrap up their winter league on Muckno

The VDE Baggers finished their winter league competition on Lough Muckno last weekend. With a cold east wind blowing, it was a tricky day out for the anglers, much in keeping with their recent outings to Muckno, which hasn’t really produced for them since the start of the year. But, at least everyone had bites this week, which was better than some of the recent slack days on the lake.

The winner on the day was ‘John the Guest’, whose 3.21kg bag saw him finish almost 1kg ahead of ‘Swing’ in second place with 2.31kg, with Aaron Nabc Hutchman taking third with 1.5kg.

But in the overall league standings, it was Aaron who came out tops, as his total of 21.8kg saw him finish way ahead of the rest of the pack to take the league title. 👏 👏 👏

Aaron takes the title

Full league results as follows:

1st place – Aaron Hutchman 🥇9 points (21.870 kilo)
2nd place – Grzegorz Bojczewski 🥈11 points (13.850 kilo)
3rd place – David Herron 🥉13 points (16.470 kilo)
4th place – Paul Hutchman 13 points (12.640 kilo)
5th place – Artur Bojczewski 17 points (14.170 kilo)
