L’ile Verte Pike Lodge launches new online lure shop

Norbert Renaud of L’ile Verte Pike Fishing Lodge in Cavan has launched a new online shop, with a range of pike flies, lures, clothing and various other types of gear and accessories available. Norbert designs most of his stock himself, with most of it hand made, and he also hand paints the lures using colours and patterns that he has found most effective.

There is a range of glide and swimbaits available already, and Norbert will be adding more to his range in the coming weeks and months. It is worth keeping an eye on the Ile Verte Facebook page, as Norbert will post when a new style of lure becomes available – and some of them sell out quickly!

We wish Norbert all the best with his new venture. You can check out all of his stuff at https://fuglylures.com/

Bait fish abundance brings November bass

This report in from Cormac Walsh of the Lure Fishing Podcast:

The fishing has been hectic again this set of big tides. Lots of bait fish in the water with lance, garfish and sprat all in abundance – hard to believe the best fishing of the year is in November!

Don’t get me wrong it’s not easy. It’s not just a matter of heading to the coast and catching them. I go to locations that I know should hold fish for a particular reason, be it an estuary or a coastal feature, structure or current.

On this set of tides I have really discovered the effectiveness of big top water lures. I have been catching fish in locations off the top where I never thought I would. I was never a fan of big top water lures, but I sure am now!

The best fish of 7lb took that 13cm, 30g Rapala Walk and Roll. The more commotion it causes the better. It just makes so much sense with all the bait fish on the surface and the bass are locked into surface feeding.

Simple tactics have been producing fish, with first and last light being the most productive periods. If you are not using big top water, give it a try you might be surprised!!

Adrian Browne wins first round of Oaklands Winter League

John Browne reports on the first round of the Oaklands Winter League fished at the weekend…

Great turn out on Sunday for the first round of the Oaklands winter league. We pegged out on the river bank. It was probably the wrong decision on the day as the Romanian Club had far better sport on the Shop bank, well done to them. Anyway the bottom 3 pegs battled it out for top spot with only 5kg separating them.

Dodder Anglers venture south for O’Connor Cup

A nice looking trout rise...

The Dodder Anglers have had a bit of a break since the fishing season closed on the River Dodder at the end of September. But rather than pack the rods away for the year, they paid a visit to the Southern County Fishing Resort over the weekend, where they held their O’Connor Cup competition.

Fishing conditions were ideal when they arrived, and plenty of fish were rising all over the lake. So, 23 anglers headed to the banks with high expectations, and it wasn’t long before fish were being brought to the net. With some anglers trying fly fishing for the first time,  the more experienced anglers were on hand to help out and make sure everyone got a fly on the water, and they even handed out a few killer fly patterns. So it was a relaxed day of fishing, with plenty of banter and laughs. The O’Connor Cup,a junior event, was won by Joe Swaine, while the adult competition was won by Jimmy Kelly. Quality over quantity for anglers fishing with Fish Tales

Chris Scally from Fish Tales had a couple of clients out with him recently, and when he saw a few fish turn away from the lures and take no interest in the deadbaits, he knew he was in for a day where fish would be scarce.

But sometimes, it’s days when the bites are few and far between that turn up the bigger fish, and so it was for Christin and Michael, who both beat their PBs with fish of 103cm and 104cm, each fish estimated at over the 20lb mark. In fact, it was only Michaels’s second-ever pike, and he’s already in the 20 club!

Full House of Bluefin Tuna for Simon & friends fishing with Tuna.ie

Simon McLarnon emailed us to tell us about the fantastic bluefin tuna fishing trip he had recently. He and his fishing group had to wait quite a while to enjoy the Irish bluefin tuna fishing experience, as trip after trip was cancelled due to bad weather. But when they finally got on the water last week with skipper Adrian Molloy of Tuna.ie, they found it was well worth the wait.

Conor Steele gets ready for a scrap with an Irish bluefin

Not only did they see numerous whales, dolphins and all sorts of wildlife, but they managed to get amongst the tuna too, and each member of their group of four got the chance to feel these super fish at the end of the line, as they had a fish each, giving them a full house on a day they will long remember.

It’s not only the tuna that make these trips memorable

A fishing journey begins for Lily with Piscari Fly

At this time of year, when the regular trout season is closed, the put-and-take fisheries come into their own as a refuge for anglers still looking to cast a fly for trout. Peter Driver of Piscari Fly decided to take advantage of the unseasonable mild weather and bring his daughter Lily to his local put and take, Ardaire Springs, to see if she could conjure up a fish or two. And the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as Lily was soon picking off fish from around the margins with a couple of flies hung under a bung. Dad Peter said: “It was a very proud moment watching her cast her own flies into the lake, see her straighten her line on the surface and then the quick jump up with excitement when the bung moved to set the hook”

She had even spent the evening before knocking out a few killer patterns for herself, and it seems her fly-tying skills are up to scratch, too!

Surprise catch for north coast small boat angler

More than he bargained for... Nevilles fine 40lb tope

Neville Snoddy was out for a day’s pleasure fishing on a small boat off the Antrim coast last Saturday. He was after a few pollack and fishing away with feathers tipped with mackerel when Neville felt a tug on the line that seemed a bit more than the usual pollack thumping. And as he felt the fish cruise away taking line, he knew he was into something a bit special. It turned out to be a tope, and a decent one at that, for after a 20-minute scrap, he managed to reel in a nice fish of circa 40lb, no mean feat when fishing with light pollack gear! 👏👏👏👏. The tope was quickly unhooked and, after a quick photo to mark his unusual catch, was released back to the water.

Split venues leads to lopsided match for Leinster coarse anglers

The Leinster Coarse Angling Federation fished the third leg of their Seamus Mooney Memorial/Enfield Winter League at the weekend. In what was a perfect day for canal fishing, they were all anticipating a good days fishing, and it certainly was, but only for half the field…

They had decided to split the match venue between the Blackshade and Moyvalley sections of the canal. And while Moyvally fished its socks off, Blackshade lived up to it’s name and was left pretty much in the shade…

All the top catches came from the Moyvalley stretch, with Bob Hulme taking the honours with circa 100 roach.
