New Ross anglers Have Close Finish at Ballyhack

This post was compiled from angling reports shared on the New Ross & District SAC Facebook page:

Despite a brisk easterly wind, optimism remained high as anglers gathered for the clubโ€™s third competition of the year at Ballyhack, (โ€œDown the Ropeโ€). Competitors were welcomed by the unusual sight of sunshine overhead, raising hopes for a productive day on the water. Fishing began at midday, with anglers expecting an early run of fish. However, action was initially slow, with only the occasional catch recorded. As the tide eased, conditions improved and catches became more consistent, with mainly dabs and a handful of flounders landed across the pegs. On peg 1, Leslie Arnold landed an impressive 31cm flounder and looked set to claim the pool prize. However, he was narrowly surpassed by Brendan Butler, who secured the win with a 32cm fish.

The club now looks ahead to its upcoming 3 Day Open in Hook Peninsula. Results as follows: Brendan Butler James Ryan Peter Ondrejack Junior Results Kai Butler Philip Kennedy Ryan Pool Winner Brendan Butler โ€“ 35cm flounder

Several additional fish over the metre mark were also recorded during the week.

Earlier, German fly angler Jรถrg spent a week targeting pike on the fly. Despite enduring challenging conditions, including strong winds and hailstones, his persistence paid off with a number of fine fish. The highlight was a well-conditioned 102cm Esox, weighing in at just under 20lbs.

Fine fish feature at Deel and Boyne anglers competition

This report from the Deel and Boyne Anglers Association:

The Deel & Boyne Anglers Association enjoyed another memorable day on the water as they hosted their 2026 Annual Trout Competition, the Jim Glynn Memorial Cup, on Saturday, 19th April.

Blessed with what many described as the first real โ€œspring dayโ€ of the year, anglers were greeted with bright sunshine and warm conditions. While the glorious weather was welcomed by all, the clear skies and flat calm water made for challenging fishing, with little ripple to conceal even the most careful approach. Water conditions also proved tricky, with a slight brown tinge adding to the difficulty.

Despite these testing conditions, a strong turnout of anglers took to the banks, including a record number of junior members, adding great energy and enthusiasm to the event. Determination paid off, with a number of fine trout landed over the course of the day.

Taking top honours was the ever-consistent Virgil Malinauskas, who secured victory with a fine trout weighing 3lbs 4oz. Second place went to long-time club member Ray Mullens, whose beautifully marked fish weighed 1lb 4oz, while third place was claimed by club secretary Pat Clarke with a trout of 1lb 1oz.

There was also plenty of excitement beyond the competition itself, with several other notable catches recorded. Among them was a remarkable 15lb pike landed by club treasurer Michael Doyleโ€”a superb fish, even if it didnโ€™t count towards the dayโ€™s trout standings.

All in all, it was another highly successful outing on the renowned Westmeath Deel, with great sport, good company, and plenty of stories shared.

Henk Roskam wins the Dave Bacon Feeder Festival on Inniscarra

Inniscarra TDL reports that Henk Roskam has won back to back festivals at Inniscarraโ€ฆ

Thankfully, the predicted storm didnโ€™t arrive, but anglers were still met with blustery conditions. Catches once again consisted of nets of small roach, with the occasional hybrid showing.
Dave Micklewright took the win on the day with 10.270kg from the Garden Centre

  1. Dave Micklewrightย  – 10.270kg
  2. Alan Larkin โ€“ 10.000kg
  3. Kevin Norcliffe โ€“ 9.150kg

All top three weights came from the Garden Centre section.
A solid start despite the conditions โ€” all to play for going into Day 2!

๐——๐—ฎ๐˜† ๐Ÿฎ ๐—จ๐—ฝ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ฒ

It was an overcast day, with the river colouring the water at the Garden Centre, leading to improved catches of skimmers and bream, along with mixed nets of hybrids and roach.
Unsurprisingly, the top three all came from the Garden Centre;

  1. Neil Richards โ€“ 13.010kg
    2. Henk Roskam โ€“ 11.260kg
    3. Trevor Platt โ€“ 10.640kg

Henk Roskam now takes the overall lead, but with an open draw for the final day, itโ€™s still all to play for. Expect a lively draw in the morning!

In a change to the norm โ€” and by popular demand โ€” the final day was an open draw.

After yesterdayโ€™s bream showing, the Garden Centre looked the obvious choiceโ€ฆ but it didnโ€™t quite work out that way. A different day weather-wise โ€” sunny and fine but windy โ€” saw the colour drop out of the water, and the bream failed to feed. Instead, it was Turtle Bay that produced the goods.

Henk Roskam continued his incredible consistency, winning the day from Turtle Bay with 11.260kg and taking overall honours once again

Final day result

1. Henk Roskam continued his incredible consistency, winning the day from Turtle Bay with 11.260kg and taking overall honours once again
2. 2nd on the day: Neil Mazurek โ€“ 10.780kg (Turtle Bay)
3. 3rd on the day: Neil Richards โ€“ 10.410kg (Garden Centre)

Overall winners

With Henk making sure of 1st place overall, Neil Richardsโ€™ result sees him finish 2nd overall in the festival with Dave Micklewright in 3rd.

  1. Henk Roskam
  2. Neil Richards
  3. Dave Micklewright

Another great week’s fishing โ€” well done to all involved!
