Killarney Salmon and Trout Angling Cub are organising a juvenile outing on Barfinnihy Lake this Friday evening, September 6th, from approximately 6pm until 8.30pm.
Barfinnihy Lake, which is near to Molls Gap on the Sneem to Killarney road, is stocked with trout and is the ideal venue for a beginner to learn how to fish. There is a house nearby with postcode V93 VP84 which is a good guide for getting there.
Under 18s will need to be accompanied by an adult and there will be no permit fees to pay as this is being sponsored by Inland Fisheries Ireland; however, there is a €1.00 fee for the insurance cover sheet which needs the signature of a parent / guardian on the night.
Fishing methods allowed are fly fishing, bubble and fly, spinning and worms.
The club will have people there on the night that will offer instruction if required. Please be mindful of our wonderful weather and be prepared for rain on the night. Please keep an eye to the local weather forecast – fishing takes place along the shore line and wellingtons would be essential.

while rivers on the northern and western seaboards have been regularly topped up with rain throughout August, those in the east and south have remained low for the most part. As the month draws to a close, heavy rain this week finally saw some fresh water for nearly all rivers, including those in the south and east, and an easing of the persistently strong winds that have hampered lough and offshore angling.
This coming weekend is forecast to be mainly dry and warm, with light southerly breezes – conditions that should suit most types of anglers from canal to coast and tench to tuna – so grab a rod and make the most of it before the season’s opportunities dwindle away…
It is off the coast that we begin this week, as Ireland’s young anglers battle it out against the top international anglers in the Under 21 World Boat Fishing Championships in Donegal. Strong winds kept the boats in the reserve area for the practice days and the first day of competition, and a strong Italian team lead after day two.
Dry and clear on Friday night with isolated mist and fog. Lows of 7°C to 11°C in light breezes.
Mainly dry on Saturday with plenty of sunshine, becoming cloudier in the south later in the day. Highs of 18°C to 22°C in moderate southeast winds. Mainly dry with good clear spells for Saturday night with patches of light rain. Lows of 11°C to 14°C in light southeasterly winds.
Dry weather in most areas to begin with on Sunday with rain moving in from the southwest later in the day. Highs of 18°C to 21°C in freshening winds. Lows of 9°C to 14°C overnight. Monday and Tuesday will bring some sunshine with showers. Highs of 15°C to 19°C in moderate to fresh southwest winds, stronger along the west coast.
Don’t forget to check the forecast before heading off and if you’re going to sea, check the tides.

It has been a tough start for Ireland at the Under 21 World Boat Fishing Championships in Donegal. After two days of fishing the Irish teams lie in fourth and seventh positions, with Team Italy out in front, followed by Croatia and Slovenia.
Conditions have been tough, with practice and the first competition day restricted to the reserve area due to winds. It’s not what the Irish team trained or planned for, but that’s fishing! We’ll bring the full results next week once the final competition day is over.
Julian Dosso is a relatively new skipper on the Irish charter boat scene, having taken over from the renowned Max Couque as owner of the Leaca Rua in Galway Bay.
Julian has been out on the water of late, when weather has permitted, and reports good fishing for pollack and wrasse in particular.
Martyn, Alan and Neil from Blackpool were over for their annual fishing trip to Ireland minus one this year. Dave Butler who was battling with a short illness sadly passed away during the other guys’ visit. Dave who has been fishing in Ireland since 1985 and never missed a year just loved Ireland and chatting and having a laugh with the locals. He kept records of every place they fished and everyone’s weights for every single day since 1985, and trust me when I say that it makes great reading.
One of their last catches together
The three guys have been staying with me at Melview Fishing Lodge since 2006 and since year one it has felt like they are best friends coming over for a fishing trip rather than clients. Dave was just a happy go lucky fisherman with a heart of gold and would do anything for any one. I know he will be missed by his close friends and family including his fishing mates in the Prebond angling society based on the Fylde coast and on a personal note I and Melview Fishing Lodge will miss his chats and laughing and joking around the place, R.I.P Dave forever in our hearts and minds.
Jim and Phil from the UK are not new to the fishing scene in Ireland, however it was their first stay at Melview Fishing Lodge with host Kevin. On arrival it was off to look at a few venues that would suit their type of fishing, when it was decided where they were going to fish it was in with the prebait for the following day. Feeder fishing at around 35 / 40 yards produced some nice Bream, Hybrids and Tench for them during their stay so there hard work paid off for them.
Phil with one of his nice mixed catches
Kevin said, the guys knew just how to approach the kind of fishing required over here and a good time had by all. Thanks guys for the company and laughs along the way and hope to see you both again next year.
Kevin has over 30 years experience of fishing in Ireland and is happy to offer a guided tour on your arrival, and to advise where the on-form waters in the area are. We can arrange your bait order so it’s here when you arrive. Melview offers free use of 17ft lake boats with engines to our guests (pay fuel only) and Kevin is happy to assist with any pre-baiting requests. Maps and other information regarding fishing are also available.
Bannow Bay Anglers are a progressive club with an emphasis on developing youth talent and introducing children to the wonderful sport of sea angling.
Secretary of the club Paula Dunphy was in touch wth a nice report on their summer programme for young anglers:
We have just finished our Summer programme of fun fishing for kids aged 4yrs to 16yrs very successful over the last two months, concluding last Saturday with awards , Certificates of Participation and the Inland Fisheries Ireland goody bags.

Well done to all the young rods who participated, and especially to their parents and the club coaches who ran the events. We love to see young anglers featuring on these pages, and look forward to seeing some of the participants with their catches in future.

Glenda Powell, who is well known in Ireland and abroad as a fly casting instructor and guide on the river Blackwater joins Daire & Tom on this week’s Ireland on the Fly.
In recent years Glenda has also been organising trips for salmon, sea trout and Arctic char to places such as Patagonia, Greenland and Iceland and having just spent two months in the land of fire and ice catching her personal best Icelandic salmon as well as some incredible sea trout and brown trout, they catch up with her to find out more about the fishing as well as the ongoing protests amongst the population against the country’s increasing fish farms.
Plus, Glenda tells of her love of travelling to new places to fish and how it also makes you appreciate just what we’ve got back home as well.
