Salmon up to 18 lb. reported in the monthly angling report for the Careysville Fishery.

Patrick Devennie head ghillie with the Careysville Fishery on the Munster Blackwater River gives his monthly report for June

(reprinted in the Trout and Salmon magazine under Irish angling reports)

With continuing high water due to relentless spells of heavy rain throughout June and early July, salmon have been running constantly all summer so far.
As and when a short weather window appears and conditions settle temporarily, fish are being caught at Careysville.
June’s catch was up on last year and also above our 5 year average, with some great fish being landed.
We had our second biggest fish of the season, 18 lb. caught by Irish angler, Fergal Molloy.
We no lengthy settled spell forecast yet and more heavy rain this week, this unseasonal pattern of wet weather seems set to continue.
However despite these difficult conditions, with just a few days break from rain, the fishing is reasonably albeit slightly restricted in where and how.

Dry flies work best for rainbow trout at the Cashel Trout Fishery

Cashel Trout Fishery report by Marlene McLaughlin

An ideal weekend at Cashel for dry fly fishermen!  That’s the verdict on the majority of anglers who fished this weekend.  Johnny Kealey (Dungiven) and his brother Leo (Limavady) used assorted dries to bank nine in total while Derry’s Jason Wilson bagged one which took a hare’s ear.  Francis Loane (Magherafelt) hooked and lost five in a couple of hours.  Lawrence Newland (Fore glen) also got one on a daddy long legs.  John Bailie (Ballywalter) banked five which took buzzers and dries.

Well done to all!

LAUNE SALMON AND TROUT ANGLERS’ ASSOCIATION WATERS AND BEAT 3

Angling Report 9th July (Email to Laune Angling Report) (PLEASE SEE PHOTO ATTACHED AND CAPTION)

As of Monday 9th July water now at 2.5 feet on the gauge at Johnston’s and running clear.  The Laune is in great condition for all methods of angling.

The last week will go down as The Week of Big Fish the best at 16 lbs falling to Tony Burke of Tralee spinning a purple Flying ‘C’ at Broderick’s.

Tony Burke from Tralee with a beautiful sea liced salmon of at least 16 pounds caught spinning at Broderick's Flat on the River Laune.

There were a number of  fish of 14, 12, 11 lb. landed.  Indeed this writer on Tuesday had what must have been a fish well into double figures fishing the fly at Gorry only for the hook-hold to fail after 7 minutes.  Patrick Richard had his first fish of the year a 10 pounder spinning,  fishing at O’Connel’s Ballymalis.  With the water as nice as it is at the moment and with fresh big fish and grilse running the river prospects are good for the coming week.

Permits for Laune Anglers waters costs only €25 up to the end of July.

Beat 3:

Beat 3 fished really well during the week with a good few fish reported from there.  There were fish caught each day even yesterday there was a fish of 10 lbs caught down at Pat Breen’s as well as some good sea trout.

A ‘One Day’ salmon permit for Beat 3 only costs €25 probably the best value in salmon fishing in the country with a good chance of a fish.         For further up to date information look up:          www.launesalmonanglers.com ‘Water Level’

Weather, weather, weather…but John the Braveheart comes to Wexford

Jim Hendrick SEAi tells us:

I left it for twenty-four hours and then e-mailed John. John lives in Sussex and arrives in Wexford on Saturday to fish for bass on the fly for four days. The mail of course informed him of the forecasted weather conditions for his visit, difficult to say the least!

At this time its still only a forecast…….

Giving John the option to cancel and in fact many other people too, is something that I’ve had to get used to over the past few weeks. This is not easy and its very very disappointing for customers who have made commitments and look forward to their days fishing. From a small business point of view its damned bloody difficult.

Getting people from both around the world and from within Ireland to come to this county to experience regular quality guided fishing is an exercise in itself, a task that needs constant attention, work and management.

It just doesn’t happen spontaneously! When customers do arrive many other aspects of the job kick into place, guiding, gear, transport, food, location timings…this is what a guide does, no problem!

By default in the middle of June July August or September in Ireland one should expect ‘reasonable’ weather where the fishery will operate normally to a large extent. In other words with all the other aspects of the job falling into place after months and years of hard work only to be thwarted at the last furlong by something beyond your control is indeed tough.

Other guides worth their mettle and working in Ireland will surely recognise and appreciate this. Realising there’s already enough to deal with at this time, they will already know the reality and the extent of the difficulty and what’s involved!

It doesn’t need to be made more difficult by anybody who doesn’t understand or appreciate that!

So I made a decision this morning, a necessary and tough one – but John made a braver one, he called me, he’s coming to weather the storm!

Fingers crossed.

Jim Hendrick

More big catches of Bream for english visitors in the East Clare Region.

Neil Payne with a lovely catch of bream from a lough in East Clare

dorothy Minogue Landers reports about coarse fishing in the East Clare area.

Neil Payne (pictured below) and Nick Gedney fished East Clare lakes over two weeks – end of June early July. With heavy prebaiting they caught lots of big bream despite appalling weather conditions. Using feeder method and redmaggot, and or sweetcorn they had many great days. But they did put their success down to the heavy heavy prebaiting. Over two weeks the two of them used 4 bags of brown crumb.

Lorainne O’Donnell IFI reports from the Shannon:
I got these photos today both from the ESB and from the angler.  It is very unusual to get a sea trout on the Shannon.  It was caught by Edouard Rousseaux
A delighted Edouard tell us “I had the fish on a brass spoon just after the first big pool up to the first water fall.
The fish had a big jump about 1 m high just after the attack, and after that a strong fight in high water of this rainy month of July.”

Trout are still taking the hatching damsel nymphs in Waterford with lakes recently stocked

David Tantrum reports to us from Co. Waterford:

Carrigavantry and Knockaderry fisheries have been recently stocked with 2 to 3 lbs. Triploid brown trout brown trout from Roscrea IFI Fishery. These live till 7 yrs. old and should ensure good sport for the future.A fresh stocking will liven up the residents who had become difficult to catch The dog days are a difficult period for fishing due to hot sultry weather, this year should be an exception! Trout are still taking the hatching damsel nymphs. But watch out in the reed beds were they will ambush the adults resting on the stems. When the weather allows, there is a good evening rise starting around 8 P.m. Gulpers are fish sucking in black smut or caenis, exciting but difficult times.you realise how many trout are in the lake .Day time fishing is now best with a dry fly Claret hopper or klinkhammer should do the business This weather has extended the day time fishing, so take advantage and remember to limit your catch, not catch your limit. Tight lines,

A perfect days fishing off the yak in Wexford

First Bass
First Bass

David from East Coast Fishing heads to Wexford for a perfect day’s fishing:

The very tough fishing conditions along the East Coast pushed us further South last Sunday. Just after one and a half hour drive from Arklow, we landed somewhere in the middle of amazing County Wexford. We found the water crystal clear and  no swell at all with a very light wind over there- perfect for kayaking.

The great Arklow Fleet hit the Wexford shores
The great Arklow Fleet hit the Wexford shores

I tried something different this time. LRF fishing from the yak. Geared up with my perch rod, casting weight up to 10g, 1000 size reel loaded with mono 0.18mm I was ready to the action. The rest of our team fished  with typical bass-pollock rods c.w up to 30g , 3000 size reels loaded with 20lbs braid. I used the 7grms jighead, then went heavier 10-15grms

First fish of the day went to Sylvia
First fish of the day went to Sylvia

The very first fish of the day went for Sylvia- a little nice pollock.
In my very first cast my lure got smashed by a bass. In the recent years I caught a dozen silvers warriors, but I dont remember a battle like with this little fella- coz I’ve never fished such a light gear for it. I hooked it on about 8 meters depth and it took me a several mins to land it into the boat.

First Bass
First Bass

After a very good begining, me and my GF were in a constant action with the pollocks. I didnt expect such a hard fight on the light gear from those fish. The sound of my screeming reel was echoing on the cliffs walls. I lost the only one fight-pollock for sure- fish was taking the line on the full speed, and I was afraid to tightening my drag as I didn’t want to brake the rod or line. The fish snagged into the kelps afterwards.

Battle with fish

Photo above presents my battle with 4lber on the light gear-priceless .

When the light started to fade, the bites becomes more rarely, but we still managed a few. There was a completely new experience for us to be on the water after dark. Awesome.

We finished late , about midnight with a few nice fish being caught after dark and a couple lost fights, probably with the elusive Wexford Silver Bars.
Such a great day on the Wexford Coast. We will be back!

Wrasse, Conger and Tope for the Carrigaholt Sea Anglers

A fine tope for this young man
A fine tope for this young man

Luke Aston, Carrigaholt Sea Angling reports:

July 10th:  We are getting very busy now and over the next 3 months I would expect to be out most days. However the group that were due in last week had to pull out due to very distressing personal circumstances. This meant that I we only out a few days last week and was fishing with put together groups.

Ballan Wrasse and thumbs up !
Ballan Wrasse and thumbs up !

Last Friday was lovely here and as luck would have it a group of lads that had fished with me at different time came together for the day. We picked up our bait quite quickly and as conditions were good we gave a Wrasse mark a try. This gave us a very busy session with lots of Ballan Wrasse to about 4lbs.

2 Congers
2 Congers

We then ventured out to the deeper reefs where we had some nice mixed fishing but not a lot of Pollack. Anchoring up in just over 60 mtrs gave us a good Conger session and as the tide came on the Pollack started to play ball! However as is often the case when the weather is as changeable as it has been here it was fits and starts for the rest of the drift. However we had a good days fishing overall.

A fine tope for this young man
A fine tope for this young man

Over the weekend we have had a lot of fresh Northerly wind and this has meant we have been fishing on the south side of the Loop in the shelter quite a lot. The Mackerel are starting to move into the estuary now and indeed we have been getting quite a few Pollack here but mostly in the 2 to 4lb range.

However even in this changeable weather we have had also be able to try for the Tope and are getting them every time at the moment. This lead to a bit of excitement for a young group I had out on Monday with which I tried a short 40 min stop at a tope mark to end the day. Even though these lads had not fished much on the sea before we had 3 Tope to the boat!
