GAME, SET AND MATCH……to GLENDA!!!
Now back to the fishy business: 21 st June:   We had 19mm rain at Ballyduff overnight. The gauge was down to 0.98m @ 09.00 but up again to 1.08m @ 11.00 & still rising. Clarity is still good however. There is a flood on the river Funcheon this morning.
Fishing has been very good. We have had 18 fish to 13lb. for 16 rod days in the last 4 days. Fish are being taken mainly with spinner at the moment but being caught even in very high (& sometimes pretty coloured) water which indicates that there must be a very good head of fish in the river. There have even been 2 fish on fly in the last 2 days up at Ballyhooly notwithstanding the high level.
The heavy rain fell mainly in the middle to lower catchment & didn’t hit the upper catchment much, though there has been some rain there this morning. The upper river is up 5cm at Killavullen at 12.15.
Friday 22nd June:15.15  The upper river has peaked at 1.78m – just 6cm of a rise. The lower river is rising slowly. It is now at 1.14m – up just 6cm since 11.00am. There is no dirty flood on the Araglen so the lower river should hold it’s clarity which is very good at 2-3 feet.  There are no rods out on the river which is a shame as there would undoubtedly be fish caught today.
David Walsh with a 12.3 pounder from Killavullen yesterday.
David Walsh with a 12.3 pounder from Killavullen yesterday.

Dennis O’Donnell caught a 12.1lb fish from Ballyhooly on Sunday and David Walsh a 12.3 pounder from Killavullen yesterday. Both were taken on spinner.
We now have 46 fish to 13lb. for 64 rod days for June to the 20th.
Total for the Season is now 103

Sean McKenna 2011 Winner of the Eugene Memorial Cup

Emy and District Anglers PRO Enda Fields reports this week that this year’s Eugene Mulligan Memorial Cup Competition will take place at Emy Lake, Emyvale, Co. Monaghan  on July 15th 2012. Fishing will be from the shore only and please note all anglers should check in at club jetty car park from 2pm. Plenty of prizes will be up for grabs.

Last years winner Sean Mc Kenna will be hoping to retain the cup. He is the early bookies favourite but there are a few locals ready to claim top prize!! The recent wet weather has seen only a couple of anglers venture out and fishing has been generally quiet, however, it is hoped that conditions will improve over the coming weekend. The club plan to stock more good sized  brown trout into the lake in the next 2 weeks so all going to plan this should bring the trout back up to the surface to feed. It is hoped that this will result in further success for anglers and more fantastic fishing as was had many anglers since the start of March.

The club are asking all members to please practice CATCH & RELEASE . This is in the best interests for the lake and the club recommends all anglers If taking fish to please limit to 1 or maximum 2 PER WEEK.All anglers are advised if booking a boat do so early and not to leave it to the last minute as presently, due to high water levels, demand is out-stripping supply.

The last limited number of places are still available in the club for the 2012 season, so why not contact us today! Trout fishing only is available on Emy Lake for holders of day tickets or season permits. Day tickets may be obtained from Paul Gormley “ GORMLEYS SHOP” North Main Street Emyvale Telephone 047-87573 Mobile 087- 6128259 or Dick Kiernan at Venture Sports in Glaslough Street, Monaghan Town, Tel: 047- 81495 or mobile 086-8351378. Well Known specimen hunter, Tony Tait reports on sea angling in the Aghada area in east Cork

Rosies sea angling club was formed in 2007 it is based in Rosies Pub Lower Aghada Cork it is on the eastern side of Cork Harbour.

We launch and retrieve our boats from the private slip at Lower Aghada Tennis & Sailing club, we have local members and some from further afield travelling from Dundalk, Kilkenny and Wales.

Our recent club competition was on Sunday 10th June 2012 it was a fall back date for 3rd June 2012 which was cancelled due to bad weather.

Only 3 boats and 6 anglers took part normally we would have 5 or 6 boats at least 10 anglers.

This was an individual competition 5 x Species Limit, this means only 5 x cod, 5 x lsd etc catch and release.

Each angler can catch 5 of every species in size witnessed by another crew member and released, and then mark his individual score card.

The only fish anglers have to bring back to the weigh in are their biggest flat and heaviest round (Conger & Ray do not count)

(All rays caught are to be identified & witnessed by another competing boat then released.)

The weather Forecast Easterly winds Force 2 in the morning veering southerly then south westerly 8 mph.

The forecasters got the weather right it was a real pleasure to be out at sea with the sun warming your body, fishing was patchy but everyone managed to catch and record a respectable score.

My wife Sue and I headed to our usual marks around the smiths but found the fishing very slow we then proceeded to the ling rocks area where we managed to pick up a few fish and a Specimen Pollack weighing 6.2kg (13lb 10oz) which is our Catch of the Week

James Murphy proprietor of Murph's presenting Carlow C.A.C. Chairman Gerry mcstraw with new equipment for programmes.

Committee members of the Carlow Coarse Angling Club got a nice suprise when local fishing tackle supplier Murph’s on Tullow St. Carlow donated four new full sets of equipment. Chairman of the club Gerry mcstraw put out a call recently requesting help as the club are probally the most active coarse angling club in the country and needed more equipment due to the rising numbers attending their programmes. Upon hearing the request Mr Martin Ralph and Mr James Murphy immediatly rang the Carlow C.A.C. offering their help, Mr Ralph commented that it is always good to give something back especially to a needy cause.

The new sets of equipment were picked up on the Monday morning as the club were traveling to the Southern Counties Fishing Resort in Garryhill, Carlow with a group of visually impared and blind anglers from the Irish Wheelchair Association from Carlow and Wexford. One of the participants Lilly actually broke the lake record landing a fine specimen of a Rainbow Trout weighing in at 13 3/4 Lb.

Nice trout fishing reported from the River Rye in the Carton House Fishery.

Nice brown trout on the River Rye at the Carton House Fishery

Rob Love, Fishery Manager at Carton House Fishery near Maynooth reports on fishing on the Rye Water and in the “The Sheet Water fishery” on the estate.

Carton House Fishery report 21/06/12

Nice brown trout on the River Rye at the Carton House Fishery

While recent flood waters have made the Liffey (where Carton House has access to some of the more productive beats) largely unfishable there is hope that the latest forecast will come through and weather conditions will settle down in the early days of next week.  If this comes to pass then I am hopeful water levels will return to a more manageable level and the superb conditions encountered (the fishing was excellent as the photo below will testify to) just over a week ago will return.

Fish were particularly responsive to a Hares ear nymph with rubber legs, this pattern was also weighted with lead on the hook shank.

The Rye Water meanwhile has been running at a wonderful level for the last week or two, less affected by floods than the Liffey it has seen superb hatches of Sedges and nymph fishing has also been very productive with small a flashback PTN working very well.  To make the mouth water even further several fish in the 3lb + size range have been spotted on the river over the last few days.

Our stocked lake ‘The Sheet Water’ has been very lightly fished over the last week with both Rainbows and Brownies tricked by the usual Goldheads, Blobs and Boobies.  The Rainbows in particular have been taking off like the clappers – screaming reels being the order of the day.

Derek Evans of Irish Times fame was a recent visitor to Carton enjoying some fishing on the Rye Water pictured below.

Good bream fishing reported from the East Clare area.

Ivan O'Connell with a lovely bream catch in east Clare

Dorothy Minogue Landers from Clondanagh Cottage reports on coarse fishing in the East Clare area:

Ivan O'Connell with a lovely bream catch in east Clare

Local renowned angler, Ivan O Connell fished an East Clare Lake at Tulla on Sunday morning last, June 10th.   Ivan is a firm believer in prebaiting and his work paid off.  He had a total catch of 29 bream and was unable to lift his net from the water.  We weighed a handful for this pic, all over 5 lb., and all caught on red maggot.  He was on the lake by 7 am and it was all over at midday!  The big bream are out there, timing is everything!

Johan from Belgium with a big east Clare bream

Regular visitor to Clondanagh Cottage, Belgian angler, Johan Boquet with a nice bream caught on East Clare Lake.   Johan had heavily prebaited his swim the night before, and all fish were caught on red worm and sweetcorn. This was his biggest  on the day…weighing in at 5 lb. 8 oz.  Well done Johan!

Father and son land big pike on Lough Corrib.

On the pike fishing front, Tomi Kurman from the Corrib Predator Team reports that the start of June has seen some some great fishing  for Tomi, fellow guide Jack Gorny, and their clients. Most fish are still in shallow water and are feeding well to recover after an unusually late spawning this year. They have been targeting pike on fly and jerkbaits to great success, with savage takes and hard-fighting fish. Guests landed several fish over the 1 meter mark, but their catch of the week goes to the father and son team of Wojtek and Filip Stypula, from Poland.

4-year-old Filip caught a jack pike on small jerkbait, but while he was playing the fish (with a little help from his dad) it was attacked by a real “crocodile”. Filip played the two fish for a few seconds, but he landed just the smaller one with some skin taken off and some huge teeth marks! Wojtek and Filip ended up catching 6 pike, with the 3 best fish at 98cm, 104cm and 105cm.

To book fishing with one of the Predator Team guides, contact them on 085 7318541 (Tomi) or 085 7741578 (Jack), check Jack’s website at www.fishingireland.pl or find Tomi on Facebook at www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001817618251

Higher water levels bring a good run of salmon and sea trout into Lough Inagh.

Colin Folan reports that Lough Inagh received plenty of rain last week, which brought levels well up and brought a run of salmon and sea trout into the fishery. Inagh ghillies Dara O Connor (aged 18) and Colin Folan ( aged 18 and a bit!) fished Lough Inagh on Saturday morning, and caught two 5lbs grilse on a Cascade and a Green Peter.  The grilse seem to be running to the top of the lake and not stopping in the river beats.  When it comes to salmon, they can be a bit like buses.  Roundstone angler, Noel King has fished Connemara for 10 years without success.  But Monday was Noel’s day.  He landed his first salmon on the fly rod at 11a.m. and the fish was estimated at 12lbs, but was released as it was a coloured hen fish.  Minutes later he landed a fresh grilse of 5.5lbs.  Both fish took a Green Peter.

To book fishing or accommodation at Lough Inagh Lodge, call the lodge on 095 34706, or check www.loughinaghlodgehotel.ie
