Good deep sea fishing including a blonde ray of 20 lb. reported from Clifden

blonde ray

John Brittain’s clients have been enjoying some fabulous fishing over recent weeks, with plenty of blue shark being landed, as well as excellent mixed species fishing for cod, pollack, ling – as good as John remembers it in his 15 years skippering a charter boat in the area.  Stephan Lamb from Leixlip brought a group over for the weekend, and Bar Kennedy was lucky enough to land a cracking blonde ray, which was released again, but probably weighed close on 20 lb.

Good deep sea fishing including blue shark for anglers fishing out from Loop Head

cod

Charter skipper Luke Aston reports on some recent deep fishing trips operating out from Carrigaholt on the Shannon Estuary and Loop Head.
Fishing Report 5th September

Lovely week last week with fine weather and good fishing. Got to do as we wanted with the group that were in and fishing was good in the area.

The reefs out to the west were producing a fine mix of fish on the drift with lots of Ling, Pollack and Haddock about. We also had some nice Cod with them even coming up in two’s! Also on the drift we had Gurnard, Pouting, Whiting, Coalfish and Spurdogs. I anchored in this deep water for the turn of the tide and this produced Conger, Bullhuss and Dogfish along with a steady stream of the normal suspects!

On another day north of Loop Head we ran in to an area of Pollack that were feeding high in the water and this produced some great sport on shads as well as the normal rigs. A bit further west in this area was where we spent 2 days shark fishing and the fishing was steady with 3 Blue shark on the boat on each day along with a couple of missed fish. Fishing on the bottom was producing some fine Whiting and Gurnard. We also had a good session on Wrasse close to the rocks.

blue shark

We spent one day early last week and yesterday in the estuary and this produced a fine steady run of Ray and another Tope along with some fine Gray Gurnard and the normal Doggies! Mackerel are also still to be caught well up the estuary.

Also over the weekend I had a day charter where we were targeting Shark. I fished this over a stone bank and we had some very good Cod fishing off the bottom which was lovely to see.

Pity as I write this the weather has really become broken and we a struggling to get out at all.

Wonderful Albacore Tuna trip out from Kerry

albacore

Intrepid angler and specimen hunter, Michael Dennehy from Blarney reports on another albacore tuna expedition using his own boat fishing far out of the Kerry coast with some friends after these unique fish and it was a successful trip.  By e-mail:

“I’ve been at the tuna again.  With the large anticyclone earlier this week, we decided it was worth the effort to travel to Portmagee for the tuna. We departed at 02:30 am on Tuesday and arrived at the edge of the shelf at 06:30. After setting up the spread of lures I then began to troll along the shelf edge towards the SW.

albacore

We didnt have to wait long with the first fish on board by 8:00 am we caught fish steadily all day. The tuna were very obliging and would readily accept any lure that we presented them with. The biggest fish weighed 27.75 lb. so no specimens on this trip but fantastic fishing. The number of different whale species on view was amazing.  We had fin whales, humpbacks, minkies and pilot whales for company.”

Rebecca catches her first bass in Cork Harbour

bass

John Roulston has fished for a number of years with Richie Ryan of Eire Bass and has had a lot of success on board “Sea Hawk” with Richie. John’s daughter Rebecca needed to catch her 1st bass so he turned to the Eire Bass guide to get that bass.  Richie has a bit of a reputation for organising that elusive 1st catch and within a short while Becs had her first ever bass on board. The fish was a fine 6 lb. and the smile on the photo says it all. She also boasted that it was bigger than her brother’s first bass, also on board.

Good deep sea fishing for the Interagency sea angling challenge held at Cobh

In the annual Interagency sea angling challenge held this year at Cobh, the team from Inland Fisheries Ireland from Macroom won the team prize ahead of the Sea Fisheries Protection Agency (SFPA) with the team from Inland Fisheries Ireland from Ballyshannon taking third place. Dan Lynch fishing on the winning team won the individual prize in a wonderful day’s deep sea fishing for all 26 anglers taking part.  Skippers Joe Lynch, Pat Condon and Donal Geary provided the boats on the day and ensured all participants fished in good areas inside and outside the Cork Harbour area.  The prizegiving took place in the Bellavista Hotel in Cobh.

A big thank you to the skippers on the day Pat Condon of the Osprey, Donal Geary of the John Boy and Joe Lynch of the Wreckhunter.

September outlook for east coast bass

Sea fishing conditions are poor this week with the current spell of low pressure and high winds. However, September is the month for big bass and with current weather conditions live bait is the best. Fish sandeel in close on the beaches of North Wicklow and on the South Wexford beaches crab baits will work well.

Catch of the Week 08/09/11

Terry Jackson and his 6lb 12oz mullet
Terry Jackson wins catch of the week with this 6lb 12oz mullet caught on fly

“I took this mullet of 6 lb. 12 oz at small harbour on the Antrim coast the other day. It was taken on a Shakespeare Trion Fly rod, Trion reel and Trion line, 6 lb fluorocarbon and a home tied fly creation. It fought extremely well on fly gear before succumbing to the landing net. I hooked and lost its mate of similar proportions before a couple of guys launched a boat and unfortunately spooked the shoal.”

Salmon anglers are reminded that from 1st September to the close of the season, there is a daily bag limit of one salmon (any size) or one sea trout (over 40 cm) on all open salmon fisheries which are not subject to catch and release only regulations. After the daily bag limit has been taken, anglers are permitted to fish catch and release, using single barbless hooks and anglers may not use worms. Fish should be handled carefully and should not be removed from the water prior to release to ensure the survival of fish.

There’s only one word to describe the salmon fishing this year in Connemara, and that is fantastic. Record-breaking might be another description, and this certainly applies to Lough Inagh, who have just smashed their previous record for salmon caught in a season, with several weeks left to go. Elsewhere, Ballynahinch, Erriff and Delphi all report excellent fishing and big improvements on previous years, with fresh fish coming in all the time. The heavy rain this week has brought big floods in all fisheries, and once the water settles fishing should be excellent for the next week. Anglers on the Moy were frustrated by low water levels and many rivers in the area were also low. In Donegal the Owenea fished well over the weekend when water levels rose again. While east coast rivers are still waiting for rain to change their fortunes the Suir and Munster Blackwater and a number of rivers in the Cork/Kerry area all saw a dramatic improvement following rain in their catchments.
We have a packed sea angling report this week with some really exciting fishing off the south west where albacore tuna were taken by Mike Dennehy and his regular crew. Mike seems to have got the timing of the fishery down to a fine art. There was a mix of good deep sea and inshore fishing in the Cork Harbour area over the last few days and best of luck to anglers fishing in the Cobh International Sea Angling Festival. Anglers are reminded that the 2011 Cork Small Boats Festival starts on the 23rd September and places are still available, see www.skuaangling.net for more information. Luke Aston, Skipper of the Clare Dragoon reports that last week they had fine weather and good fishing with everything from blue shark to cod caught. There was also good fishing reported from Clifden, Killala Bay and Red Bay where charter boat anglers enjoyed catching a wide range of species.

The windy conditions made for difficult fly fishing in the last week and anglers on Lough Sheelin found the fish difficult to get stuck into, though one angler did manage a lovely 8lb fish. The fishing on Corrib was described as reasonable and many are expecting September to fish well as the lake continues to cool. Loughs Conn and Cullen fished well despite the unfavourable conditions of late with rain and gusty winds. There have been good hatches of olives in the sheltered bays, particularly in northern Lough Conn.

Congratulations to the Garda Siochana Coarse Angling team who won gold in Holland at the 15th European Police championships. Back at home Cavan and Longford fished well for visiting and local coarse anglers but the weather made fishing difficult on occasion.

The cool weather suited pike anglers but the blustery conditions made lake fishing difficult at times. We have a couple of reports from Loughs Lene, and Derg and from Portumna. At the recent Kingspan Qualifier fished on Finn River near Clones fishing was poor and most fish caught were small. Pike anglers are also reminded that the European Pike Challenge begins on Monday the 19th Sept and continues on the 20th and 22nd on Lough Derg.

On Saturday the 22nd October Inland Fisheries Ireland will again be holding an introductory ladies fly fishing day in aid of Action Breast Cancer at Annamoe Trout Fishery near Glendalough in Co. Wicklow. These events are free, open to any lady and run from 10.30 to 16.00. For further details or to book yourself a place on the day please contact Mark.H.V.Corps (Angling Advisor) on 087 672 7194 or [email protected].

There will be a bit of rain tonight and Saturday will be a wet and windy day, with widespread showers which will be heavy at times in particular along the west coast. Southwesterly winds will increase to fresh to strong along the west coast, with some strong gusts at times. The outlook for Sunday and early next week is for lots of blustery wet weather.

Tight lines especially in Ireland,

Paul Bourke,
Angling Information Officer.

Dave Houghton reports on the King of Clubs event coming up in Arva area

LeeNew match venues for the King of Clubs?  Match fishermen turning up for the King of Clubs next Monday (September 12) could find themselves tackling two venues not used for this tournament for the past 10 years or more.  Inland Fisheries Ireland has introduced Killykeen on Lough Oughter and Haughton’s Shore on Garadice Lake into the melting pot of venues for this prestigious five-day event.  The match HQ is the Breffni Arms Hotel in Arvagh, which is central for both fisheries and the usual fish-filled venues on the Lough Gowna system and a final decision will be made on Friday after checking local water levels.  The guaranteed first prize is £1,000 plus optional pools.  All match entry fees are returned in prizes including £50 for the top a weight from every five anglers every day!  Tickets are still available from Irish Ferries.
