Belturbet September Festival wrap up

After a week that began with blistering sunshine and ended with violent thunderstorms, the Belturbet September Festival, organised by the Belturbet Angling and Conservation Club, came to a close on Friday, September 8th.

Thirty six anglers had taken to the banks of five local lakes – expertly pre baited and pegged in advance of the event –  to thrash it out over five days and it was the early leader, John Potters, who improved as the event went on and win outright with over 200lbs by day 5 – a good 50lbs more than the nearest competitor.

Top Five:

  1. John Potters 202lbs 14oz
  2. Julian Kendrick 152lbs 03oz
  3. Stephen Leddy 146lbs 01oz
  4. Mark Theedom 139lbs 11oz
  5. Nicky Harrison 127lbs 03oz

The organisers would like to thank the following people:

The Castle Sports & Gastro Bar Belturbet and Church View Guest House B&B Belturbet – thanks both for the continued support.

Irish Bait and Tackle Limited have pulled out all the stops and the Belturbet Festival committee and all of the people who fish in are local area would be lost without them.

Inland Fisheries Ireland without your continued support we could not run these events and with your help in the future we will continue to improve not only match but pleasure angling in our small part of paradise.

Lastly – the landowners who allow access. Without whose continued support it would not be possible to run these events you truly are the hero’s of these festivals and let no one forget it. A Thanks to everyone who has helped and hoping everyone has tight lines all week.

Irish Angling Update 🎣 8 September 2023

Today, Friday, September 8th, is likely to be the hottest day ever recorded in Ireland in the month of September. If you live in parts of Kilkenny, the weather sages have predicted that your thermometer might top 31°C today – two full degrees above the previous record (29.1°C) – which was set in Clongowes, Co. Kildare, in 2009. The weather record-breaking has become a regular occurrence and it doesn’t make for great reading; 2022 was our warmest year on record, March of 2023 was our wettest March, June was our hottest June, July was our wettest July. We are a week into September, we’ll have to wait and see what records it brings…

Source: Met Eireann

The forecast will also be hot for tomorrow, the second Saturday in September – also known as International Women’s Fly Fishing Day. At 11am, in every time-zone across the world, female fly-anglers will post photos or videos of themselves to Facebook or to Instagram that will show their enjoyment of fly fishing – so make sure and get involved. For more information please visit International Women’s Fly Fishing Day on Facebook or email [email protected].  Alternatively, you can listen to our very own Irish international Maddy Kelly – one of the driving forces behind the initiative – as she chats with the Ireland on the Fly team about the day and how the obstacles to women in fly fishing are finally breaking down.

Back to Kilkenny now, where we’ll start the fishing reports this week on the Nore in Thomastown. After a washout of a summer, Peter Driver of Piscari-Fly has issued the first of what he hopes to be a regular newsletter, with news of trout fishing in Thomastown and on the Nore catchment. Needless to say, it was the ever reliable dry-dropper that did the damage for Peter this week. Also on the rivers was Paddy Dunworth, who guided his American guest to some Limerick trout using his newly-acquired upstream dry-fly skills. On the loughs, like Conn and Cullin, there has been limited angling activity, but those who have ventured out have been rewarded.

We are into the closing few weeks of the season for salmonids and it hasn’t been a year for the photo albums. The Munster Blackwater has had another quiet week, though some beautiful fish were caught and carefully released there. On the Moy, there was a slight upswing in numbers caught, with 100 reported throughout the system up to September 9th; worm and prawn were the most effective methods. In Kerry, there was Saharan sand but no salmon in Waterville, as the sultry conditions meant that lines remained slack. On a more positive note, the River Erriff saw a salmon landed almost every day throughout August, with 60 salmon and 10 sea trout recorded during the month.

On the pike fishing scene, Canadian anglers met their targets while fishing with Anglers’ Paradise recently – catching both wild Irish trout and pike on Lough Derg. Further upstream, there was a big event held on Lough Ree last weekend, where 60 anglers fished the Lough Ree Predator Challenge, and an even bigger one is taking place this weekend, where 85 boats and 240 anglers will battle it out to become the King of the Lake. The organisers would like to remind everyone taking part in the event that, in line with the law, the wearing of life jackets is COMPULSORY by every person in every boat in the event on both days, otherwise they will face disqualification. Suncream is also advised….

Lough Ree Predator Challenge

September is the season for coarse angling festivals in Ireland and there are plenty in the calendar for the always-busy Lough Muckno. Over in Cavan, the Belturbet September Festival will fish to a close today as will the Arvagh International. Brackley Lough in Leitrim fished well for the IASCaire Feeder Club for the first of their random-pairs matches while over in Longford, UK anglers staying with Melview Fishing Lodge made the most of their trip with pre-baiting and early starts.

Brackley Lough

To the tides now, where some great tope and specimen smooth hound have been caught in the last few weeks, not least on the east coast where smoothies to 14lb fell to fresh peelers. Fishing out of Wicklow, Kit Dunne’s crews got in amongst the specimen tope, along with a number of other species. Further down the coast, the South Shore SAC held two big events last weekend – the inaugural Tommy Keogh Memorial Open and the annual Mick Kearney Open. Each of the events was a great success – both socially and in angling terms! Cormac Walsh of the Lure Fishing Podcast put his money where his mouth is last week too, by getting out there and chasing bass in the south east. Cormac reckons that fish were much more active around the early morning high tide, with the first hour after high water the most productive for him.

Further west, the Silver Dawn had some unbelievable blue shark fishing at the weekend, with four anglers catching 52 Blue Sharks including two large specimens during a long-range overnight trip out of West Cork – they win our Catch of the Week for this week. From the Cork coast, the West Cork and District SAC held their competition in Caliso Bay and, over on Long Strand, the Cork SAC had garfish, bass and homemade scones.

Following the coast north, the Lady Gwen II in Clare has had some success with spurs and cod lately, though mackerel are hard to come by. The Clare Dragoon has also had some great pollock and mixed species fishing – including a rare spotted ray – but there has been no sign of that elusive six-gilled shark since June. On the other side of Galway Bay, skipper John Fleming says it’s been a busy time with good pollock fishing to be had; the tope fishing was fantastic too for most of the week. Meanwhile, the Galway Bay SAC had a hugely successful mini-species session for their junior members at Ros a Mhil harbour.

Finally to the north west, where Ewings Boat Charters have been in amongst the bluefin and pollock  fishing out of Rosses Point, while up in Westport, the 12th Battalion Army Fishing Club had their annual fishing trip in Clew Bay; a 9lb cod was the highlight of their day on the water.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland. If fishing in the sea, don’t forget to check the tides.

It’s been another very quiet week on the Munster Blackwater. Last week’s rain saw a small rise on the 3rd of September but since then the bright, hot conditions have not been to the anglers advantage. Noel from the Blackwater Valley Fishery reports and has some good advice for anglers fishing at this time of year…

03 September:  With the season coming to a close it is nice to see some good fish been caught from our fishery. What wonderful colours this time of year. Remember if returning fish give them plenty of time to recover in the water before releasing them. Use the net if needed.

Great fishing for UK visitors at Melview Fishing Lodge

Part of Andy’s catch that day

Regular anglers Andy and Pete from the UK were here at Melview Fishing Lodge once again for their annual fishing trip, the first morning it was early breakfast and straight out fishing and the first day see lots of Roach, Hybrids and a couple of small Bream.

Andy and Pete with a nice catch

Then it was up and out before day light the rest of the week to fish on their prebaited swims, the very warm weather and seemed to slow the Bream fishing down and then it got to the point where they backed off completely due to a lot of Pike activity.

Part of Andy’s catch that day

However they were blessed everyday with plenty of Tench, Roach, Hybrids and a few nice Bream so not all bad for the guys.

Host and Guide Kevin said, ‘These guys know when they have to change things around to adapt to the conditions which they done well to make their week a successful one. Well done lads and thanks for the laughs and company and look forward to seeing you next year‘.

ALL FISH RELEASED UNHARMED.

South Shore SAC fish inaugural Tommy Keogh Open & Mick Kearney Open

This report from South Shore SAC on their recent events:

Tommy Keogh Open

It was a day fittingly enough sent from heaven for the inaugural Tommy Keogh Open on Saturday, September 2nd! Tommy was a legend of Irish Match Angling & one of the founder members of Southshore SAC. A massive thank you must go to both the Keogh Family & Frank Baxter for their hugely generous sponsorship of the event. It was with great pride the club hosted the competition as part of our summer festival, which boasted anglers from Kerry, Cork, Northern Ireland and everywhere in between!

In short sleeves and sun cream weather, 56 Anglers took to the beaches of Ballinoulart & Morriscastle in bright sunshine! A south easterly blow on the previous Thursday had put a nice colour in the water and hopes were high of a few fish!

In zone A, Tommy Fogarty (back after a short hiatus on the Open Scene) was straight back into the groove on the end peg (no 1) in Ballinoulart. Utilising his family tactic of fishing primarily in Welsh Waters, he was consistently pulling dabs while those around him on the low numbers struggled in many cases fishing for them scarce flounders in the gutter. Following Tommy’s lead, many anglers followed suit and went out over the bank where Alby Allan was rewarded with a hard fighting Smoothound of 86cm winning the round pool in zone A.

The other end of the zone was a similar affair, with Eamon Bermingham & Joe Carley (another two stalwarts of the match scene) slugging it out in a distance fishing masterclass, landing dabs, dogfish, gurnards & an odd flounder.

In Zone B on Morriscastle the fishing had been better, a flurry of flounders were evident both in the gutter and over the sandbar! Brendan Wall had set a scorching early pace with 12 flounders while some around him struggled! Again some anglers opted to fish out, and (that name again) Noel Fogarty was rewarded with a cracking 89cm Smoothound on his first cast to take the round pool in zone B. As the fishing progressed, Thomas Keogh & Darren Ryan were absolutely flying in the 2nd half of the match, almost going fish for fish with both anglers finishing up on an impressive 24 fish! Another angler deserving of mention is Stephen Byrne of Ringsend & Irishtown SAC who fished the competition with two broken wrists (yes, you read that correctly), who amazingly picked up 20 flats to post an excellent score. Indeed it was great to see so many relatively new faces from Ringsend & Irishtown fishing and featuring in the prizes also!

Also in zone B, young Adam Watchorn fished brilliantly to surpass many seniors but also crucially winning the Tommy Keogh Junior Cup. Almost as important – he beat his dad as well!

In the final shake-up, it was incredibly fitting that Thomas Keogh won the competition, just edging Darren out in zone B. We don’t know if there was any divine inspiration, but when he trailed Brendan by 12 – 0; somebody may have had a word on his behalf somewhere! In zone A, Eamon Bermingham, life long Southshore Member and son of the Late Great Eddie (another founding member of Southshore) took the win.

The final matter to sort was the Leinster Open Gold, that went as follows;

  • Gold Medal – Thomas Keogh
  • Silver Medal – Darren Ryan
  • Bronze Medal – Brendan Wall

Overall it was a fantastic day and competition, finished off in fine style in the Upton Court and a match which is sure to become a permanent & prestigious fixture on the match fishing calendar.

Mick Kearney Open

Our Indian Summer continued on Sunday, September 3rd, to welcome an impressive 64 anglers, all competing to get their names on the much-coveted Mick Kearney Senior & Junior Cups. Once again – the support & sponsorship of the event from Ross Engineering & The Kearney Family really elevates this competition into being one of the most prestigious competitions run annually in Ireland.

The match was split into three zones, one each on Morriscastle, Tinnebearna & Ballinamona. Hawaiian Tropic & hats were the order of the day as the anglers made their way to their pegs in anticipation. Zone A on Morriscastle started very brightly with the majority of anglers picking up an early few fish. Indeed Junior Angler Saoirse O’Driscoll took an overall early lead with some cracking flounders off peg no 4. Arunas Cirkelis was also catching very well early on. The presence of swimmers can often be much maligned by anglers, but the people in the water in the designated swimming zone had the fortunate effect of driving a head of flatfish toward the low numbers! Alby Allan (Peg 1) & Ruairi Coleman (Peg 2) took full advantage & had a great battle over the afternoon catching consistently, mainly flounders but with a few bass mixed in, in the bright conditions.

In Zone B Aidan O’Sullivan (all the way from Tralee) was catching steadily, as was young Aaron Willet & The Flounder Whisperer himself Shay O’Neill (A previous Winner of the Mick Kearney). Zone B was to be a very tight affair with only a couple of fish separating the first 4 anglers! Some anglers had rigs destroyed by silver eels, but were more than consoled at the decent points that tally up as a result! Final tally saw Aidan win, Shay second, and previous days winner Thomas Keogh take a very strong third place in the zone.

If Zone B was a tight affair, Zone C was a demolition job by the aptly named Gordy Hardman! It’s little known that Gordy & Ian Daly have a holiday slush fund for their annual fishing trip to Kerry that they “invest” any winnings in during the year. Gordy had been delinquent in his lodgements this year, but he has more than made up for that with his performance on Sunday with an impressive 10 fish haul to win the zone comfortably. Although unconfirmed, Ian has taken a cut of the winnings to go see a chiropractor in an attempt to fix his bad back after months of carrying Gordy! 2nd in Zone C, adding to his very strong showing the previous day was ultra consistent Ireland Senior Shore Men’s Team Manager Joe Carley. Another travelling Angler – Brian Mansfield finished third in the Zone, great to see the travelling anglers rewarded for their efforts!

As the clock ticked to 5 o’clock it became clear that Morriscastle was the zone to be in, and sure enough Alby had just done enough to pip Ruairi for both the zone & overall, with Stephen Glynn again featuring very strongly to take third in the Zone. The draw was all important – and interestingly Alby had plenty of help from Saoirse who managed to draw out an end peg special – well done Saoirse! The winner of the Junior Competition was Aaron Willet who had fished excellently up in Tinnebearna with a bag containing flounders, bass & eels. Runner-up in the Juniors was Saoirse O’Driscoll who was just edged out on fish length, having the same number of fish as Aaron.

It was back to the Upton Court for the presentations & all important raffle. It was a terrific prize table and extremely well supported by the anglers. Eugene Andrews is a superb angler, but he is a world class raffle hustler, as time and again he walked to the prize table, firstly to cheers, then to some moans and subsequently a chorus of boos! Joking aside, the raffle is a very important part of the fundraising for Heart Children Ireland so a massive thank you to all the anglers who supported it over the weekend. Special mention to several anglers who donated cash prizes they won at the weekend to the charity, a fantastic gesture thank you very much! Final count on Fundraising for the weekend was €1,725 – absolutely brilliant!

“The Mick Kearney” has always been a brilliant standalone competition in the calendar, now combined with the Tommy Keogh Open as part of an annual festival of shore angling, The Southshore Committee have already begun planning for next years event to make it bigger & better, and give anglers the opportunity of two days fishing on the fantastic Wexford beaches, with the option of the overnight stay & socializing!

Wicklow to Wexford sea fishing

Tope fishing well in Wicklow

Kit Dunne from Wicklow Boat Charters has been putting in the hours during this settled spell with a few different crews tackling up for tope and mixed species. First up were a party from Techcom who got some nice tope, dogfish, wrasse, pollock, scad and plenty of mackerel.

In the next group Leroy McIlroy got himself a specimen. The big push from the spring tides made things tough, but the group got three runs – one dropped the bait, one got ‘got’ by a nuisance seal and the third one – a quality fish – stuck.

Specimen

Wicklow Bay SAC had another youth session last Friday with mackerel, Ballan wrasse, Corking wrasse and a teeny bream to test the drag for skipper Kit. Kit reports that there was great interest from the kids and some budding anglers in the club are coming along very well.

Kit has his target set as we move into Autumn. He’ll be trying to break his boat record of 173cm X 76 girth – estimated @ 70lb. We’ll keep you posted…

Great tope and pollack fishing in Galway Bay

Skipper John Fleming says it’s been a busy week on the Brazen Hussy in Galway Bay. Some great pollock fishing to be had, and the tope fishing was fantastic for most of the week.

There were a good few bull huss in the mix, and plenty of wrasse as well.
Had 6 year old Oisin out on Sunday evening with his dad Rory. He smashed his PB pollack 3 times in the evening and even helped me skipper the boat too. Well done Oisin!

Ireland on the Fly talks to Maddy Kelly International Women’s Fly Fishing Day

international womens day

Maddy Kelly – the Irish woman behind International Women’s Fly Fishing Day

This Saturday, September 9th, is International Women’s Fly Fishing Day, a worldwide initiative to encourage more women to take up fly fishing and for fly anglers around the world to show support for women fly anglers as well.

Wherever you are in the world, women are asked to post photos on social media at 11am showing themselves enjoying fly fishing and already in its fourth year, it’s hoped it’s a day that will grow and grow.

But did you know that an Irish female fly angler is one of those behind the project?  Maddy Kelly is an Irish international angler who teamed up with Pamela Dunlap from West Virginia to form a truly international initiative and on this week’s Ireland on the Fly podcast, Tom & Daire spoke to them about the day and how the obstacles to women in fly fishing are finally breaking down.
