Mick Flanagan of Midland Angling and Shooting has been out on Mount Dalton Lough just outside Mullingar. Mick and boat partner Dermott O’Toole had a nice day’s fishing with dry flies, the best of the fish a 2lbs 10oz trout caught by Dermott.
It seems like the fish are hopping into the boat these days down at Wicklow as every day on board with Wicklow Boat Charters is producing heaps of fish for the happy punters.

Calm seas and great fishing off the Wicklow coast
The photos are spectacular and the quality of the fish is even better as specimen Hounds and Tope are featuring in most reports from Kit. He has a few spaces in his calendar right now so if you fancy a bit of top quality fishing over the next few days, give Kit a shout.

James Quinn reports from the Galway Fishery on excellent fishing up to the end of June.
From 22nd June to end of month there were 175 fish caught, 31 on shrimp and the rest to the fly. Water levels were perfect at 1 gate, with a good run of salmon averaging 5lbs, even though they arrived late.
The best of the week was a 10lbs bar of silver that fell to a Munro killer belonging to Tim Keane from Dublin, and sportingly released.
Tom Tynan (91) from Kildare caught his quota from the high bank on fly and his sister in law, Margaret Downes (age not to be revealed), not to be out done landed a nice fish of 4.5lbs from the same bank on the fly.
Father and daughter team, Jim and Sarah Doody landed 5 fish for two sessions on both fly and shrimp, best being 7.5lbs by Jim on fly from the high bank.
Father and Son teams of Brendan and Cathal O ’Dwyer and Dave and Jack McEvoy had their quotas for a session on fly.
Great to see the next generation being coached by their parents.
First Salmon For Lochlann
On that note, we had a photo sent in from Anthony Walsh, uncle of young Lochlann Walsh.
There were fireworks on the Galway weir fishery last Sunday the Fourth of July. A very proud Lochlann Walsh caught his first wild salmon weighing in at just over four pounds. After losing a good fish earlier in the day, and after a titanic battle, the fish was finally landed and after a few years of trying Lochlann finally broke his duck. He was doubly excited as just the evening before he caught and returned a lovely sea trout of one pound on the river slaney on a kildevil spider. He is already planning his next fishing trip with a day on Lough Corrib at the end of the month.

102 Not Out – And Still Catching Fish
A great achievement, but at the other end of the age spectrum it was great to see Ned Cusack, former fishery manager, landing two salmon at the age of 102! Most people would do well to even reach that age, never mind being able to fish for salmon. Ned also landed an invasive Pacific pink salmon on his afternoon fishing at the weir.
Centurion Ned with son Eamon and his catch of two Atlantic salmon.
We also spotted some great photos from Yamil Turcuman, who enjoyed his day on the fishery with friends James Barry and Fergus Glynn. All fish sportingly released, and thanks for the photos Yamil!

There are a great number of fish showing in the rivers, and with one gate open on the weir, conditions look good for fishing for the next few weeks. Although day fishing is very busy, there may be slots available for evening fishing (fly only). Congratulations to our top 3 who absolutely smashed it even through some very hard days when fishing was very tough! Although fishing conditions were very difficult this time around we can all agree that it was brilliant to get out and finally fish with our club members after such a long time of being restricted due to Covid.
We want to say a massive thank you to our main sponsor Fishing Tackle & Bait for sponsoring us with the trophies. We appreciate your support throughout all these years! Also a BIG Thank You to our friend from VIVADO for sponsoring us with prizes for every league!

Mark Gannon reports on an all night session that turned up some monster fish…
Thursday evening we set off at 1900 hrs and steamed over 2 hours to a wreck that had fished well for several species over the years. The Ling record was broken fishing on this wreck in 2000 after 34 years and also the Coalfish record was smashed twice. But the conger record – that elusive prize of 72lbs is still to be broken. It nearly reached at 67 lbs by Seamus Guerin (RIP) on this wreck and on the same day we boated 114 congers nearly all over 30 lbs including several specimens!
So the plan was a few drifts to set us up for anchoring, then anchor in a position that as the tide changed direction we would still be on the wreck. We also had a few chum blocks out from Screaming Reels to entice the sharks. We had seen several devouring the carcass of a whale enroute that got everyone excited!
Specimen conger (180cm) on the measuring mat
In the end we boated over 50 congers. The heaviest for Mark John Gannon and Seán Maxwell measured at 1.8 metres, both Irish Specimens. We also had 10 Blue sharks and a few Ling. The ling were starting to come on the feed but we had to head for home. They’ll be bigger next time we venture south.
Inshore Fishing:
The bay is still producing good catches of Common skate and thornback ray, and there’s good pollack fishing on light tackle. The Selfdrive fleet targeting bass are doing well with fish to 48 cm. Anglers from the shore are getting Giltheads. There was one of 6.5 lbs for Jeremy Smith another Irish Specimen,

Salmon angling on the Blackwater picked up earlier this month on fisheries from Ballyduff, Co. Waterford to Cappoquin, Co. Waterford. Unfortunately, despite plenty of reports of large shoals of Salmon seen along many sections of the river other fisheries have not done as well. In the last few days the grilse run has hit the river and anglers in the lower half are again doing very well.
On 6th July, Fortwilliam’s anglers had great sport with 4 fish landed. Nick Ro landed 3 fish on fly on the Glenmore beat releasing 2 safely and hooking into the same amount with long distance C&R.
The Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery saw a 30cm rise in water levels on Wednesday 07 July. By 2pm they had 7 fish hooked and 4 landed on the Cable Island beat alone.
On the 8th they had another fantastic day on the fishery with a total of 11 fish hooked and 6 making it to the net. Angler of the day was Robert who landed 4 fish on the fly at Cable Island. Water was dropping slowly and the fish were running hard.
Fortwilliam salmon
On Saturday all beats at Fortwilliam produced fish as there was another nice run of grilse. Anglers reported it was great the see fish entering the fishery even to watch them running by. Father and son team Paddy and Luke Mullins had a good day out landing 3 on fly and all released.
Blackwater Salmon and Trout fishery also had a great day on Saturday. Between Friday and Saturday they had 32 fish hooked with 19 making it to the net. There was fantastic fishing around and all beats produced fish. Most salmon were taken on light gear and small flies providing great fun for the anglers.
Glenda Powell was fishing her beats on Sunday and had lovely grilse, pictured here
Fish were also reported from Blackwater Salmon Fishery and Careysville on Sunday (yesterday). Although there are a lot of grilse running some bigger fish are also on the move. At Careysville one lucky angler had a right lump of a fish. One of the largest salmon on the fishery this season so far.

Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery
Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.
Careysville Fishery offers some of the best salmon fly fishing in Ireland and includes 26 named pools. It is considered by many to be one of premier beats for salmon fishing in Ireland. Wading is excellent and among the numerous streams, pools and glides there is a great variety of fly fishing to suit both complete novice and challenge the most competent of fly casters.
At Lismore Castle & Golf Course Fishery, we offer nearly two miles of two inter-linked beats, the Castle Beat & the Golf Course Beat.
The legendary Castle Beat consistently ranks as one of the top Salmon beats on the River Blackwater, for the number of Atlantic Salmon caught per rod. The Golf Course Beat offers about 1.5 miles of fishable water through meandering majestic countryside. The Golf Course beat offers a number of bewildering pools suitable for unmatched spinning and bait fishing.
We provide Day Tickets for some prime Salmon fishing in Mallow Co. Cork. We have excellent fly water, shrimping worming and spinning also. We also have very competitive Day rates and we have very recently upgraded our fishing.

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports that as the levels on the river came up on Sunday the fishing improved…
7th July 2021: Even though the water was a bit on the high side we still managed to land 5 grisle and 1 salmon between 2 rods.
There was also a large amount of sea trout traveling, a lot of them were juniors but we did see and catch a few up to 2lbs.
The water should hold good for the next few days and whoever gets on the lakes in suitable conditions should have a field day.
Make a booking
There are approximately five miles of fly fishing along the main part of the Owenmore River in Kerry, with 33 named pools and an additional 180 acres of lake fishing in this Kerry beauty spot. The salmon, grilse and sea trout begin to run in April. The runs continue through spring and summer into early October.
July has got off to a fairly grey start here in the West, with cloudy skies dominating our weather. Some rain early in the week helped with low water levels, with many rivers seeing a rise, most dropping back now after a small flood.
Salmon had been waiting impatiently in many estuaries and made the most of the rise to head upstream, and reports from around the country are of good salmon fishing this week. With many reporters focussing on fishing, we should see more reports come in next week to reflect this. There were 391 salmon reported on the Moy, with many anglers enjoying great sport. The Moy Estuary is also fishing well for sea trout at the moment.
Brendan Garland with a nice grilse on the Ridge Pool
More pink salmon were reported this week, with at least 2 from the River Corrib in Galway. Unfortunately, these are a non-native species to Ireland and, if they become present in sufficient numbers, may negatively impact our native Atlantic Salmon. As a result, Inland Fisheries Ireland has issued an alert and is now asking all salmon anglers to be aware of the possibility of catching a Pink Salmon, making sure not to release any back to the water, and to report any sightings to IFI.
Not much pike action to report, but Arkadiusz “FishHunter” Smakowski sent us in a great video of a decent canal pike from a recent outing. Competition anglers may be interested in the Erne Predator Challenge that will be hosted by Watermill Lodge on Lough Erne in September.
Coarse angling is picking up well, and some match anglers in Monaghan enjoyed good fishing despite torrential downpours at the weekend. Young Anthony O’Neill had good fishing for tench, carp and even gudgeon at Mount Juliet, but the best coarse report is from Cavan this week. Dublin angler Conor McIlwaine has been putting in the hours looking for big bream of late and struck it lucky this week with some fine fish, including this ‘dustbin lid’ which is our Catch of the Week.
Conor McElwaine with a super bream from a Cavan venue
Trout angling on many rivers is difficult at the moment, with low water and warm temperatures making for tough conditions. Fishing early and late is often the best option. In spite of low water, anglers on the Nore at Mount Juliet enjoyed good sport.
The sea angling season is reaching its peak, with another couple of months of warm waters and good fishing to look forward to. We have reports of good fishing from all around the coast, including great tope and ray fishing in Wicklow. Mackerel have been plentiful all over, providing good bait and bringing predators inshore. Good reef fishing for mixed species was reported from a number of areas, with some Killybegs anglers catching some eye-catching bluemouth while out with skipper Adrian Molloy.
Club record bluemouth!
Predators are also enjoying the mackerel bonanza, with porbeagle shark reported from west Cork and Clare, including a fine fish for young angler Evan Collins, fishing aboard dad Tom’s charter boat.
And now the weather
The weekend looks good for fishing, with a mix of overcast skies, a few clear spells and scattered showers tomorrow in light winds. Sunday looks more showery but next week sees plenty of dry weather and light to moderate wind, and even high pressure possibly building later in the week.
The fishing has been very good off the west Clare coast of late, with plentiful mackerel getting whitefish and predators feeding hard. Luke Aston, skppper of the Clare Dragoon, reports good mixed species fishing. Fish caught included pollack, cod, haddock, coalfish, and red gurnard among others.

More haddock!
Also known as the Robin of the Sea, the red gurnard is a strikingly colourful catch
Shark!
The Lady Gwen, also fishing the west Clare coast, also enjoyed good fishing with plenty of whitefish about. Skipper Sean Maguire had a group with something else on their mind after a morning catching pollack and other reef fish. They set up a shark drift, and were rewarded with three porbeagle shark to the boat. I’m sure that was a lot of fun! All the sharks were tagged for the Irish Sportfish Tagging Programme, a wonderful citizen science initiative that has provided invaluable information on growth rates, distribution and migration patterns of some of our biggest fish species.
A nice porgie for this angler. Note the tag on the dorsal fin.
Another porbeagle shark before tagging and release.
