Some good weights for Sheemore anglers in Leitrim

Gary Chandler reports on Sheemore Angling Association’s recent outings…

18 February: Another wet day fishing today only stopped raining when we packed up as always, but the wind kept off anyway but so did the fish.

The results were.:

  • Robert Howgate. 9lb 00oz
  • Gary Chandler. 6lb 07oz
  • Ian Kelsey. 5lb 01oz
  • Ray Carpenter. 2lb 11 oz
  • Joe van der Spek. 0lb 08oz
  • Malcom Singleton. 0lb 01oz
  • Dave Oddy. DNW
  • Pat Tigwell. DNW
  • Andrew Riley. DNW

So a bit of a poor day for some mostly small fish caught. Ian did manage a nice trout but trout and eels don’t count.

21 February: Blue skies and sunshine for the Wednesday match this week makes a change from hiding under the brolly all day. There were some good fish showing for some too. Here are the results.

  • Robert Howgate. 17lb 08oz
  • Malcolm Singleton. 15lb 11 oz
  • Stuart Lear. 13lb 12oz
  • Joe van der Spek. 11lb 09oz
  • Francis McGoldrick. 10lb 13oz
  • Pat Tigwell. 9lb 05oz
  • Dave Oddy. 7lb 04oz
  • Gary Chandler. 6lb 12oz
  • Ray Carpenter. 4lb 08oz

So some good weights caught and some quality fish as well but as always they were few and far between but we didn’t get wet so happy days.

Stefan Martin from Killybegs Mariners SAC reports on the fishing around Donegal Bay…

24 February: A stiff easterly blew across the beach at last night’s league outing but the well wrapped up anglers enjoyed the starry moonlit night reeling in fish from the surf.

A few trout early on quickly put into the buckets of seawater for release attacked the lugworm baits and lots of small whiting and flounders mostly early 20cm size.

Another very close finish with just 5cm points separating 1st and 2nd place with most points cash prize going to Michael McGettigan and 2nd place money going to Frank Kane.

Longest fish was a 27cm flounder (trout don’t count) for Michael McGettigan.

An enjoyable night on the beach at a difficult time of year great to get out well done to all.

Blowing an easterly gale and the lively trout leaps out of the release bucket at the comp. Always good to see them swim off back under the floating suds of the surf

Water levels and temperatures drop at Delphi

Delphi

David McEvoy reports from the Delphi Fishery where the winter is coming…

Just a quick update. Water levels have dropped off and are now running at 17. Water temperatures have also dropped to below 5 degrees. We didn’t bank any more fish since Geordy’s on Monday last, but fish have been seen but not caught.

Delphi

At the moment, it looks like this week will be difficult with temperatures plummeting to near freezing and below, so any fish got will be hard earned.

We do however have availability in week 11, from the 12th of March up to and including Friday the 16th. It would be a River/Fin rotation, with 2 rods Monday, 4 Tuesday and Wednesday, 6 Thursday and 3 Friday. Boathouse cottages are available also and preference would be given to people staying. I’m sure we’ll have water by then and I would be very hopeful of fish being caught.

If anyone is interested please contact the office on +353 (0)95 42222 or email to [email protected].

Killarney lakes seeing salmon but Laune Anglers still waiting

River Laune
Johnson's Fishery at 1.75m.

Laune Salmon and Trout Anglers’ Association, reports that no salmon have taken on club waters but there are reports of fresh fish on Lough Leane…

As of the 22nd Feb 2018 there have been no reports of any Spring Salmon caught on the Laune yet. There was one fresh fish reported lost on the fly almost 2 weeks ago by one of our members when the river was running at 1.7m.

River Laune
Johnson’s Fishery at 1.75m.

There is news of fresh fish caught and seen in Killarney so fish are certainly running the Laune. Angling efforts have been light so far but conditions haven’t been favorable either.

The river is currently at 1.75m and is again in good order for fishing.

The forecast is giving dry weather for the next week so water level’s will continue to drop which will be welcomed, particularly for those looking to get the fly rods out.

Lackagh gets its first salmon of the year

Spring salmon
John McLaughlin with the first salmon from the Lackagh this year

There has been very high water since the beginning of the season on the Lackagh. This week however saw levels fall to more desirable levels. Angling attendance has been low with only 1 or 2 rods fishing per day.

The 1st salmon of the season was caught on Wednesday. This was a fish of around 9 to 10lb caught and released by John McLaughlin on a badger tube fly from the tail of the Grilse Pool.

The 1st salmon arrive around this time of the year so we would expect rods to start meeting a few more salmon

Good water on Drowes not but no salmon last week

Water levels were far better this week with the drier weather leading to the river dropping over the week.

On Monday the gauge read 0.79m and by the end of play on Sunday the gauge read a lovely level of 0.62m.

Despite the nice water levels there were no salmon catches reported though the fishery was fairly quiet with only a few rods fishing over the week.

Blackwater Salmon Fishery has 3 beats downstream of the weir and 2 upstream of the weir. Blackwater Salmon Fishery offers fishing on approximately 5 miles of the river Blackwater. The fishing is spread throughout the middle section of the river to offer good sport throughout the fishing season. Inland Fisheries Ireland prosecutes Irish Water over lime discharge and fish kill in River Varty

At a sitting of Bray District Court on 20/02/2018, Irish Water pleaded guilty to the discharge of deleterious matter to the River Vartry on the 21/02/2017.

The offence related to the accidental discharge of lime from their water treatment facility at Roundwood, Co Wicklow.

Ms Roisin O Callaghan, Fisheries Environmental Officer with Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), told Judge Kennedy that, on the 21/02/2017, IFI received a call that there had been an accidental spill of lime at the water treatment plant. On investigation, she confirmed that the spill had resulted in fish mortalities for approximately 500m downstream from the discharge. A series of water samples were taken and analysis confirmed that the lime spill had altered the pH in the receiving water, resulting in the death of approximately 100 fish.

Irish Water co-operated fully with IFI’s investigation and initiated an immediate clean-up of the site.

Mr Eoghan Cole BL, representing Irish Water, stated that following the clean-up, the Environmental Protection Agency had completed a dye survey on the drainage network to confirm that only clean surface water was discharging to the River Vartry.

Judge Kennedy commented on the significance of the River Vartry in supporting Atlantic Salmon, Sea Trout, Brown Trout and Lamprey.

Irish Water were fined €500 with costs and expenses amounting to €6,937.65.
