Mick Flanagan reports on the TAFI youths interprovincial qualifier fished on Owel…

Last Sunday the Trout Federation Of Ireland held their youth’s interprovincial qualifier on Owel. It was a tough long day’s fishing for the twenty-eight anglers, and only 2 fish were caught measured and released. Sadly some of the anglers did hook fish, but unfortunately did not land their prized catch.

Lough Owel and midlands pike update

pike
Mary and Ed McConville

Mick Flanagan has all the news from Lough Owel…

Lough Owel anglers recently fished the Glen Owel Cup for pike, and Stan McKeon reported it was tough going. Still a few pike were caught, and Tom Gorman produced the winning fish weighing 6lbs 8oz. Philip Keena was 2nd with 2lbs 10oz, and Brendan Murray 3rd with 2lbs 8oz. Lough Owel anglers will be back in action on the competition scene come August when the Peter fishing gets going. We will keep you posted on these dates.

Family affair

Another few anglers reeling with excitement after their first trip to Mullingar were the McConville family from Clontarf. It was first for Mary, Ed and sons Tommy and Peter trying their hand at the fishing, and had a wonderful few hours.

Mary and Ed McConville

It was a real family day out as Ed and Mary recently celebrated their 50th birthdays, and are planning another trip back to Mullingar. The McConville family also are very keen golfers, and a few days are planned fishing and golfing here in the Midlands. Mind you I made it quite clear I am not doing caddy, unless we drop into the 19th hole for a beer.

West Cork salmon rivers waiting for rain

Eileen Carroll with a round up of West Cork salmon catches…

ILEN RIVER

3 grilse landed for the week averaging 5lbs each on fly and worm by local anglers.  Sea trout fishing at night time is improving due to low water levels.

COOMHOLA RIVER

No report.

OUVANE RIVER

No report.

Go fishing…

The River Ilen is a medium size spate river that fishes best on a dropping flood for both salmon and sea trout. Spinning, worm and fly fishing are the methods used and allowed on club water.

The river is beautiful and a joy to fish, pools along club waters are easily accessible with seats, steps and stiles put in place for the anglers comfort. With selective tree pruning done along the river in recent years fly fishing has become a more available option especially on the lower river with numerous pools opened up to suit fly fishermen, night time fly fishing for sea trout is a pleasure with great stocks of trout entering the river from April.

Inniscarra Fishery

This salmon fishery is located between Cork City and the dam at Inniscarra (9 miles). The fishery is run by the ESB (Electricity Supply Board) and an ESB permit is required. There is a fair run of fish with a very good grilse run dependent on water. Permits can be purchased on site from Dan O’Riordan, ESB Inniscarra; 087-9983879.

Lee Salmon Anglers Club

The Lee Salmon Anglers club was established in 1967. It was formed by a group of anglers interested in protecting and promoting the sport of salmon and trout angling on the river Lee. Day tickets available: http://www.leesalmonanglers.ie/

Owenea very quiet as levels poor

Low water levels persisted on the river for the weekending 02 July with the highest reading on the gauge only being 0.16m on Thursday. The gauge average for the week was poor only reading 0.12 metres. The fishery was very quiet, especially given the time of year, with only 2 visiting rods fishing for the week. To date, there have been 3 salmon recorded in the register.

On Tuesday, Tommy Corr recorded a 3lb grilse caught & released from beat 9 on a spinner.

On Friday, Tommy reported a further grilse weighing 6lb caught from beat 9 on a spinner.

On Saturday, Michael McCrory accounted for an 8½lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 8.

The forecast is for some wetter weather over the coming week and hopefully this will result in some better water levels.

Very low water on Drowes but 6 a day being caught

The good run of grilse continued this week (26 June – 02 July) despite the very low water levels and there continued to be an average of some 6 salmon (mainly grilse) caught per day. Given here are some of the catches from the Fishery Catch Register.

On Tuesday, Columba Fitzpatrick recorded 2 grilse weighing 2½ & 3lb caught on worm from Upper Mill Pool.

On Wednesday, Brian Donovan reported a 5lb grilse caught on fly from Scott’s Corner.

On Thursday, Harry Lloyd logged a 3½lb grilse caught on fly from the Sea Pools.

On Friday, Robert Heron registered a 3lb grilse caught on fly from the Sea Pools.

On Saturday, Jose Maguiera accounted for 2 grilse both weighing 3lb caught on prawn & fly from Black Hole.

The forecast for the coming week is for some unsettled weather and hopefully this equates to a much needed rise in water levels.

Pollack fly fishing on fire at Cork Harbour

Pollack
Pollack were on from the first cast

That Carlow guide living in Cobh had an interesting booking recently. You never know who is going to make an appearance on your boat.  Eire Bass guide Richie Ryan takes up the story…

The great thing about the guiding business is the variety of people you meet. I’ve had Derek Davis, RIP, out a few times, I could have listened to him all day, a most interesting character he was. I had a Lord from the House of Commons out a few times and to his credit I wasn’t even aware of his lineage until well after the outings. And so it was that the magician and mentalist Keith Barry made contact with me and wanted to try out fly fishing for pollack.

I know what some are thinking, sure he’d conjure up the fish! As we headed out Keith spoke of his frustration with the poor sea fishing off the East coast lately. I’ll admit I did feel more pressure to land fish for a celebrity. He’d been out recently with Daryl Ewing out of Sligo, an excellent skipper. I would have to produce results to match those skills.

Pollack
Pollack were on from the first cast

The first cast, a demonstration of the fly fishing technique we use on board Sea Hawk produced a pollack to the fly. To my absolute delight the fishing was on fire. There was hardly a cast that didn’t produce a fish. Keith didn’t even have to use his magic! And so it continued for hours. At the end of the session we had a quick dip for a few bass which produced only 3 but a nice end to the day. Keith Barry is a very keen angler and like Derek Davis is excellent company on the boat. He was so happy that he promised to return again before the season ends.

Good numbers of salmon running at Delphi

David McEvoy reports from Delphi

04 July: Well since my last update catches have continued at a steady pace, with 26 fish landed. Fish seemed to be more difficult to tempt in week 25, despite some good numbers entering the system and some very experienced anglers combined with some youthful exuberance, which I must say was a joy to behold, as there are so few young salmon anglers these days.

Darren Stewart, home on holidays from Australia landed a fish of approx. 4lbs on Doolough. The Hoffer family from the US had an outing on the 21ston Doolough and Maura managed to land her first ever salmon, a nice fish of 3lbs10ozs. Alan Musgrove had a fish from the Rock Pool on the 22nd on a Calvin Shrimp. Two young guns from Sligo, David O’ Flynn and Mark Walton had a fish each on the 23rd of approx. 5 and 6lbs. They were landed in the Whin and Rock Pools and took a Ghillie and a Collie Dog respectively. Charles Carroll also had a fish from Cooleens of approx. 3lbs on a Cascade. The 24th there were also three landed. Ronan Murphy had a fish of approx. 3lbs from the Dynamite on a Frances, while Gary Lloyd and Reinhard had one each off Finlough of 3lbs5ozs and 5lbs11ozs on a Silver Stoat and a Sunrae Shadow respectively.

Thus commenced week 26, when a long standing group from Bavaria returned. They landed sixteen fish in Delphi and another six on the Erriff. Here they had nine off the River, six off Finlough and one off Doolough. Of these Reinhard had 7, Fredo had 3, Benny had 2, and Martin, Werner, Yvonne and Mattias all had one each. It was Mattias’ first off the River in quite a few years. All were taken on Cascades, Collie Dogs or Sunrae Shadow’s. Highlight of the week was Julie McMullen’s first ever salmon, which was taken on Beat 9 on the Erriff and weighed in at approx. 3.5lbs. Well done Julie.

By the 30th of June the total for the month was 55, including three good double figure fish, Urs’s of 16lbs6ozs, Roxi Davies with one of 14lbs5ozs and Alan Dunlop’s of approx. 11lbs. This as expected is well up on last year’s total of 14. I also believe that the fishing should improve through July and early August.

The first few days of this month have been good, despite low water with 5 fish landed yesterday, the 2nd. Brian Fisher had a beautiful grilse of 4lbs10ozs from the Deadman’s on a Stoats Tail, while Giovanni Mazzoleni had two from the Meadow of 5lbs1oz and 3lbs10ozs, both on a Silver Wilkinson. French duo of Claude Chardonnet and Michel Valuet had one each of 4lbs2ozs and 3lbs5ozs from the Turn and the Whin, both on Collie Dogs.

There is nothing so far on the 3rd, but plenty seen and a few lost, but we are due for a heavy belt of rain this evening and tonight which should set us up nicely for the coming days.

Some decent sea trout fishing at Currane

Vincent Appleby reports from Lough Currane…

30/6/17 All the Salmon and Sea Trout action come from the Bungalow on the North Shore, so straight to the Salmon and Sea Trout department. UK angler Martin Sutton, fishing out www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com caught a fine 4 lbs. grilse on the troll and finished his day off with a fine fly C&R 2 ½ lbs. Sea Trout, all while Fishing with his gillie Mr. Bob Priestley. We stay at the Bungalow and the hired out boat department of www.oshealoughcurrane.com where tralee Angler Mr. Tadhg O’Neil and guest caught two trout on the drift and for the rest of the Angling community there was no comment, I wonder why? Its simple they were ashamed of their inability in producing a wild Atlantic Salmon or a Premier Lough Currane Sea Trout, be it on the fly or troll. Yesterday’s weather, amount of rainfall 2.6mm. Maximum air temperature 14.6c.

1/7/17 All the Sea Trout headlines come from the North Shore and the Bungalow, Dublin angler Mr. Enrico Fantasia, caught and released a fine Sea Trout on the drift, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com. Staying at the Bungalow in Neil’s hired out boat Department, Kenmare angler Mr. Mike Hennessey, had a cracker of a day, with 3 Sea Trout ranging from Junior class up to 5 lbs – all released. Just for the record there were a good few boats out but as usual they failed miserably in their duties in all departments. Wind NW light to fresh with misty rain for the most of the day. Yesterdays weather, amount of rainfall 0.4mm. Maximum air temperature 15.2. Amount of rainfall for the Month of June was 141.5 mm.

2/7/17 All the Sea Trout fly fishing headlines come from the Bungalow, Dublin angler Mr. Enrico Fantasia, caught and released another fine 2 ½ lbs. Sea Trout, while fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of  www.oshealoughcurrane.com and in Neil’s hired out boat department a guest caught two Juniors, which were sportingly put back.  Wind West light to fresh with good cloud cover. Yesterday’s weather; rainfall 2.0mm. Maximum air temperature 15.4c.

3/7/17 Local gillie Mr. Frank Donnelly of www.lakelandshouse.com was in good form in the Salmon department. While trolling on his own, he caught a fine 5 lbs Salmon. Staying in the Salmon department, two anglers fishing on their own caught 1 Salmon. In the Sea Trout department, Dublin angler Mr. Enrico Fantasia, while fly fishing with his Gillie Mr. Neil O’Shea of www.oshealoughcurrane.com caught and released two Sea Trout up to 2 ½ lbs. Dublin angler Connal Bennett staying at www.lakelandshouse.com had a 12 trout up to one and half pounds. Martin Kearney also fishing from www.lakelandshouse.com, had two sea trout of 2 ½ lbs on Saturday and Sunday. Wind SW light and overcast.

4/7/17 We start at Vincent’s harbour where UK and Waterville angler, Mr. Ken Towner, caught a cracker of a 5 lbs. Sea Trout on the drift. I can tell you Ken was delighted with his afternoon’s manipulations in the Sea Trout department. Two anglers fishing on their own were seen catching a Grilse and a fine Sea Trout on the fly. Retired UK  Judge David Burton has the last say in today’s Salmon department and his catch of the day was a fine 4 lbs. Salmon caught on the fly and you can say without any fear of contradiction his gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com is not Guilty in failing in his duties and the truth of the pudding is in the eating of. Wind SW light and overcast and very foggy this evening. Yesterday weather, amount of rainfall 3.4mm. Maximum air temperature 16.4c.

5/7/17 Judge David Burton and fishing with his Gillie Mr. Tom O’Shea of www.flyfishingatloughcurrane.com  laid the Law down in the Sea Trout department and for good reason, conditions on Lough Currane weren’t easy but the good Judge showed the rest of the Waterville anglers his skills in how to manipulate and stimulate his flies and by doing so caught two fine Sea Trout Both in the 1 ½ lbs class. Wind Light to calm West with good cloud cover. Yesterdays Weather, amount of rainfall 2.8mm. Maximum air temperature 16.1c.

That is your ration from the last week on Lough Currane, from your Gillie and the Waterville Fishery, no spin no fly’s just facts.
