Fresh salmon all through the Bandon despite low water

Jason Nash reports that July has crept up on the Bandon Anglers all of a sudden as the summer saunters on…

Water levels are relatively low at the moment yet salmon continue to run the Bandon in very good numbers and they are in top quality condition. Fresh grilse and salmon are spread right throughout the system, with most fish coming to shrimp and worm, yet the odd one is being coaxed to the fly.

For the new year, Bandon Angling Association have set up a new website which you can view here. A new guiding service has been launched in conjunction with Jason Nash, Peter Aspinwall and Phil Dewey. Details of the guiding service are provided on the website and they are looking forward to making memories and enhancing people’s fishing experiences on the river Bandon.

Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.

Osgur Grieve has the angling report for the Erriff 28th June – 4th July…

The past week produced 27 grilse for the fishery. John Phelan had a good evening on the 28th releasing 2 grilse of 3lbs. and 6.5lbs. from the falls on a Cascade. Jake Delaney kicked off the morning of the 29th nicely with a beautiful fresh run wild grilse of 6.5lbs, on a cascade from the middle garden which he released. Later that morning he caught a ranched grilse of 4lbs. in the upper garden on a Cascade. Then it was Kevin Clayton’s turn catching a 4lbs. ranched grilse in the middle garden and a 3.5lbs. ranched grilse from the square pool, both released. Benjamin Weltz also fished and had 2 grilse weighing 3lbs. and 4.2lbs. respectively from the middle garden and falls pool on a Cascade.

Friday 30th saw Joe Thompson fish with us for the morning and he was rewarded with 2 wild grilse of 3.75lbs. and 4.5lbs. these fish came from the falls pool and were caught on a Cascade and a Willie gunn tube, both fish were returned. This brought us to the end of what was a productive month of June with good numbers of grilse showing up earlier than usual.

Regular visitor Neil Spellacy fished with us on Saturday July 1st and had a ranched grilse of 4.4lbs. from the lower garden pool on a Cascade. Peter Coyle (Northern Ireland) released a nice fresh grilse of 3.5lbs from the upper garden on a stoat’s tail. Local club man Peter Coyne fished on Sunday 2nd and released a 4lbs. wild grilse from the lower garden pool.

Tuesday 4th brought a good flood peaking 1.6m in the morning and with it a good run of grilse, our anglers had 12 grilse ranging in weights from 2.5lbs. to 6.5lbs.. 5 of these were caught by regular visitor John Phelan. Well done to all our anglers and with more grilse showing the prospects look good for the week ahead.

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative off to good start on both sides of the Liffey

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative off to good start on both sides of the Liffey

Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative has kicked off for the 2017 Summer Season with several local schools and youth groups already enjoying fishing lessons and field trips. Sphere 17 from Darndale and Whitechurch Youth Services from Rathfarnham were among the first groups to get out fishing, while Chapelizod’s Community Festival incorporated angling and environmental lessons from the Dublin Angling Initiative into its programme of events.

Sphere 17 Youth Services from Darndale, Dublin 17 travelled to Malahide, North County Dublin to take a charter boat, Fish & Trips, for a few hours of sea angling. The group spent the evening learning how to fish beside Ireland’s Eye, catching pollock and mackerel. While fishing, they also reported seeing plenty of local resident birds and seals as well as wallabies and deer on the island. The fishing trip was one of six over the past month with the group also enjoying lessons in coarse and game fishing.

Meanwhile, Southside youth group Whitechurch Youth Services were also out fishing recently with the Dublin Angling Initiative. They were taken to Courtlough Fisheries, Balbriggan where they were coached in bubble and fly fishing for trout. Participants learned about fish handling and catch and release fishing.

In addition to fishing lessons and field trips, the Dublin Angling Initiative has also been attending community events with a view to introducing young people to the fisheries resource in their own locality. At the recent Chapelizod Community Festival, 16 young people between the ages of 10-15 years enjoyed an environmental and history lesson on the River Liffey which runs through their community from fisheries staff. The lesson was followed by a more practical invertebrates sampling and identification session and an opportunity to examine juvenile trout and salmon which were taken from the river before being safely released again. The group finished with a fly fishing lesson where they learnt the basics of getting started in the pursuit.

Oisin Cahill, Co-Ordinator of Inland Fisheries Ireland’s Dublin Angling Initiative said: “The Dublin Angling Initiative aims to empower young people to appreciate and enjoy their local amenity by showing them what it can offer alongside and giving them an understanding of the importance of conservation and protection. We combine theoretical lessons with practical sessions across environmental and angling themes.

Angling is a hobby that can be enjoyed in an urban location such as Dublin at any age of ability. We hope that the young people who participate in the programme and who are introduced to fishing will continue to enjoy it into later life.”

Anyone interested in learning more about the Dublin Angling Initiative should contact Oisin Cahill, Dublin Angling Initiative Coordinator at Inland Fisheries Ireland (E: [email protected] ) Enquiries are welcome from any groups or individuals interested in the programme and availability will be on a first come, first served basis.

Good sea trout fishing on Carrowmore Lake!

Anglers on Carrowmore Lake enjoyed good sea trout fishing during the week with the odd fresh grilse also being caught. Earlier in the week, Tom Walsh from Kildare and Franz Kayzer, Bangor Erris & Germany, had a fresh grilse each, while regular visitor, Eddie Rowe, caught a fine 3 lbs. sea trout and a grilse (both released) on Sunday. Best flies included Green Peter, Noon Zulu and various Muddler patterns. After a couple of windy days the lake has settled again and prospects for the coming days are looking good.
