CPR Saves Fish says Inland Fisheries Ireland as new campaign highlights importance of conservation

CPR Saves Fish says Inland Fisheries Ireland as new campaign highlights importance of conservation

CPR saves fish according to Inland Fisheries Ireland at the launch of a new campaign to highlight angling and the importance of conservation. The hashtag #CPRsavesfish has been placed across a number of bridges and high footfall locations across the country to engage the public around the pursuit of conservation focused angling. The stencils have been attracted public attention over the past few days before Inland Fisheries Ireland revealed the aim of the awareness initiative this morning.

‘CPR’ stands for Catch, Photo, Release’ and refers to a method of angling where a fish is caught and subsequently returned unharmed back into the water. This angling technique is proven to contribute to the maintenance of healthy fish stocks and ensures future generations can continue to enjoy the recreational and economic benefits of the fisheries resource.

Inland Fisheries Ireland is supporting catch and release across all types of angling including pike, coarse, salmon and trout fishing as well as sea angling. The method results in positive survival rates for fish when caught using best practise methods. Research carried out by Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research in 2014 examined the survival of salmon after catch & release fishing in three Irish rivers – the Owenmore in County Mayo, the Mulkear in County Limerick and the Feale in County Kerry. Overall, 92% of the Atlantic salmon recorded after tagging survived post Catch & Release*.

The #CPRsavesfish stencils can be found in urban locations in each River Basin District in Ireland including Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Letterkenny and Kilkenny. The hashtag stencils, which have been power washed with water onto pavements, are completely environmentally friendly and are expected to fade naturally in the coming weeks.

Suzanne Campion, Head of Business Development at Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “This awareness campaign aims to put angling on the general public’s radar by playing on the concept of CPR as a lifesaving mechanism and to engage existing anglers around the practise of catch and release fishing. Catch, Photo, Release (CPR) angling ensures the sustainability of our fisheries resource in the long term with most sporting anglers in Ireland already practicing catch and release to some degree, recognising that it ensures the maintenance of healthy fish stocks and the sustainability of the sport in the long term.

Angling is a pursuit that can be enjoyed at any age or ability and Ireland has a host of top angling destinations right on doorsteps across the country. We are encouraging novice anglers to visit www.fishinginireland.info/cprsavesfish to find out more about how they can try fishing in their local area.”

Salmon and sea trout continue to run at Costello and Fermoyle

Terry Gallagher reports that salmon and sea trout continue to enter the Costello and Fermoyle system in good numbers which meant the lakes have started to produce some respectable catches as well as the river…

Three generations of the Collins’ family, Donie, Denis & Tadhg, returned for their annual visit and fished for 3 and a half days. Their final tally was an impressive 48 sea trout & 2 salmon, including a productive half day on Fermoyle Lough where they caught 13 sea trout.

Neil Spellacy returned to the river and landed 2 salmon. A 6lbs bar of silver at the Rack Pool on River Beat 4 and a second fresh fish of 4lbs 8ozs from the Cabbage Pool on River Beat 1.

Regular visitor, Rene Lachemaer fished his preferred river beats, 2 & 3, and was delighted to have caught salmon of 6lbs & 4lbs as well as 3 sea trout of 1lb each as well as another of 1lb 8ozs. Interestingly, both the salmon fell to the Claret Bumble as did the sea trout.

Finally, Sean Kelly & Geoffrey Fitzjohn also fished the middle river and recorded fresh salmon of 5lbs & 4lbs respectively.

Irish Angling Update – 06 July 2017

The really fine days gave way to regular Irish summer weather; some wind, some rain, some cloud, some sun, as June changed to July and another month slipped past us. Anglers made the most of the conditions and whether afloat or ashore, on fresh or sea water the catches weren’t long coming in…

Fisheries owners on the Munster Blackwater are reporting some great fishing in the last week. Good salmon were caught and released on the Blackwater Salmon Fishery and Ballyduff Bridge Fishery in particular. The Bandon is reporting a good head of fish in the river and angling is still possible despite low water. There was little to report from West Cork or Kerry as low water is impacting the fishing across most of the South West. A few salmon and some decent sea trout were reported from Lough Currane. In the west of Ireland the grilse run is going well and the Erriff Delphi, Lough Inagh are all reporting good catches given the mostly dry weather.  The River Moy wins the numbers game as the catch there nearly made 600 salmon. There was some exciting fishing at Galway despite low water. Amongst the catches were a couple of pink salmon. There have been reports from Scotland of further pink salmon turning up in catches, so anglers should be on the lookout for these, and please report them to IFI if caught.

While salmon rivers could do with a good drop of water, wind and rain early in the morning hampered anglers’ best efforts to make the most of caenis hatches on Corrib. It was a tough week in general on the lake with few fly of any sort hatching. Sheelin has slowed down now after the mayfly madness that possessed many anglers right to the end of June. There is still a bit of dry fly fishing to be had on the lake but many will switch back to wets, especially if the trout are on fry. River anglers on the Shannon are concentrating on the Camcor and Little Brosna as the croneen trout have started to run and some good fish are being taken on fly. Anglers are reminded of the changes in the regulations across the Shannon system and are advised to make themselves familiar with the new regulations.

BSI Sensas team are the All Ireland Club Champions for the second year in a row. The championship event was fished and Lough Oughter and some great fishing was had. Some lovely bream were in the catches which were up to 41lb a day. Cavan is on form at the moment as Kevin Johnson recently won the Breffni Challenge on 56.450kg. Elsewhere there was good fishing reported from Shannon Harbour, Moystown and Meelick along the River Shannon.

The Shannon system is also doing well on the pike angling front. Some serious pike have been caught recently on Derg including our Catch of the Week – a 114cm fish caught by Tom Pagz who was fishing with Cedric Charpentier. The recent Lough Ree International Pike Classic 2017 was a great success and the top prize of €2,500 was won by Lukasz Stankiewicz and Piotr Kaczmarek  with 5 pike for 463cm. Good piking has also been reported from Owel, Ennell and some other midlands venues. The River Suck was the venue for the  3rd qualifier of the 2017/18 GO HIRE National Pike Championships which was won by Dodger Smyth with 4 pike for 36lb 9oz.

Weather for charter boat and small boat fishing was not always perfect given the windy conditions of some days but great sport was had and good fish landed. Specimen smoothhounds and tope to 47lb were caught off Wicklow. Down south there was top notch saltwater fly fishing for pollack in Cork Harbour and good wreck fishing out of Courtmacsherry. Good reef and sand fishing was had by boats off Clare’s coast and those toothsome predators, the sixgill sharks, were back on the scene. One angler had a 12 foot shark estimated to weigh 800lbs. Fishing is going well for charter boats on Galway Bay too and further north on Donegal Bay one boat had 23 species on board in a club competition.

Don’t forget about the Fish & Film competition. Junior fishing clubs, youth clubs, projects and centres from across Ireland are invited to apply to the competition by taking film footage of their fishing adventures and promoting it online. The top three groups with the most views on their film will go forward to a junior fishing competition where the overall winner will receive a €1,000 fishing tackle voucher for their club with the two runners up each winning a €250 voucher. To enter visit: http://www.fisheriesireland.ie/fishandfilm

Fresher weather is expected over the weekend, with some showers but bright dry periods also and unsettled conditions through the early days of next week. It’ll still be pleasant enough over Saturday and Sunday but from Monday the weather the salmon anglers have been hoping for looks set to arrive…

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Grilse run slows slightly in Galway but anglers still enjoy excellent sport

Salmon fishing has been excellent over the last few weeks, with a great run of grilse into the Corrib. The last week has seen catches slow somewhat, and increased water levels from Thursday on have made life a bit more difficult, but we are still averaging nearly 9 fish a day over the last 9 days, with 78 fish recorded and many more hooked and lost. German angler Wolfram Hoppe visits every year and has been rewarded with a number of fish this week, landing 2 fish on a couple of days, including a fine grilse of 7.5lbs, all on fly. Sean O’Toole doesn’t have to travel as far to fish the weir, and went home happy with 2 grilse to 6.5lbs on fly and shrimp. Fellow local angler Simon Lenihan also had a 6lbs fish on shrimp. Moycullen man John Anderson landed 2 grilse to 5lbs on fly, and former Erriff Fishery manager Jim Stafford was rewarded with a nice grilse on the fly also.

Headford angler and ace photographer Conor Ledwith paid a visit with Enda Scahill, and landed 2 fish, including the best fish of the week at 12.5lbs, caught on spinner. Enda had to make do with a more unusual catch – a second pink salmon of the week, this one a smaller specimen of about 1lb. There have been reports from Scotland of further pink salmon turning up in catches, so anglers should be on the lookout for these, and please report them to IFI if caught.

Eoin Cosgrove had 2 grilse to 5.5lbs on spinner, as did regular visitor Michael Rogers from Dublin, and fellow Dub Andy Smith had 2 to 6lbs on fly and shrimp. Brian O’Rourke landed 2 fish to 5.5lbs on shrimp, while longtime Galway angler Bertie Lynch had 2 to 6lbs on shrimp.

Gus Murphy fished shrimp and had 2 grilse to 6.5lbs, while Niall Tonge had 3 grilse to 6.5lbs on fly. Adrian Murphy had 2 to almost 7lbs on shrimp, and Spanish visitor Miguel Gomes had 3 grilse to 5lbs on the fly. German angler Jurgen Kommallen had a 5.75lbs fish on shrimp, and Tom Wallace landed 2 to 5lbs on fly.

Water levels should drop over the next few days with the OPW expected to close back down to one gate open on the weir. There are plenty of fresh fish still running, and prospects are once again excellent for the coming week.

Once again huge thanks to Cormac Burke of FishComm Ltd for sponsoring great prizes to the club for both the FishComm Ltd open shore and then the boat species comps. Such great events that all local anglers look forward to each summer and great prizes. Also thanks to Land and Sports and Mooney Boats also for sponsoring reels and other prizes much appreciated. What a great days fishing and well done to everyone for taking part especially the winners.

Mariners – FishComm

“It gave me great pleasure to be the main sponsor for the Mariners boat angling competition again this year,” said Cormac Burke, MD of FishComm Ltd.

“It’s always wonderful to return back to my home town every year but even more so when I can be involved in the fantastic local angling which the Mariners SAC, both on shore and at sea, have worked hard to develop and promote to the wider European angling community and has resulted in a major boost to local tourism with anglers from near and far coming to get a taste of fishing in this beautiful part of Ireland,” he added.

As well as sponsoring the main prizes for both the Mariners SAC shore and boat competitions, a prize top-of-the-range boat rod was also donated to the club by FishComm clients MMG (Maloy Maritime Group) from Norway.

Greenland sharks beginning to shed their secrets on longevity, Irish Times

Greenland sharks, the longest living vertebrates on Earth, which can be found off the northern coast of Ireland, could hold the secret to long life, geneticists mapping their DNA have predicted. The sharks, which live for up to 400 years, are believed to have unique genes that could help explain not only their remarkably long life span but also life expectancy in other vertebrates including humans…

By-law introduced in effort to save valuable brown trout, Irish Times

A new by-law that outlines a number of regulations to help conserve brown trout has been introduced in the Limerick District (Shannon River Basin District). It provides for an annual closed fishing season in certain waters, a daily bag limit, a minimum size limit in specified waters and maximum number of rods to be used at any one time. The waters included are the river Shannon and loughs Sheelin, Derravaragh, Owel, Ennell, Ree and Derg, which are all in the Limerick District…
