Kilcoleman Fishery, Enniskeane, is renowned for its hospitality. The owners David and Patricia Lamb make a particular effort to make their guests feel at home. Past visitors have described the atmosphere as ‘laid back’ and the accommodations as ‘cosy’. Kilcoleman is “fly only” throughout the entire season. However, in certain water conditions, spinning is permitted for salmon. Trout angling is “fly only” at all times. web:http://flyfishing-ireland.com

On Sunday 11th June Naas and District Anglers held a summer knock up match on Gills pond in Ballinakill. Eddie Long reports…
We drew our pegs at 9:30 and began setting up for what we’d hoped would be a bagging session. Weather wise, the day started out quite sunny but there was a very strong wind blowing across the lake. This wind was definitely going to make fishing very difficult for those of us unlucky enough to draw a peg on the right side of the lake from Pegs 15 and upwards.
Just before the all in there was a bit of a downpour and as luck would have it I’d left my boots at home. I had the best Goretex money could buy but alas it was channelling the rain water straight down into my runners, boo hoo.
Trev Campbell won the day
I fished a swim at 10m to my left by the lillies with a green swim stim groundbait. To my right I fished a red mix with sensas tanches at 8.5m . I also had a chuck of the method feeder at 35 turns into the centre of the lake and another closer in at 20 turns hoping for an auld lump of a carp. It wasn’t to be on the method as all I hooked were weeds. I spent most of my match fishing my left hand line and it produced a few fish, some puppy trench and one 2lb’r tench which felt like a proper beast on my 12s elastic. Presentation of the bait was practically impossible with the wind constantly blowing the pole left and right and most on my side of the lake were struggling badly. The other side seemed to be much calmer with the wind on their backs and there did appear to be more fish being caught there but not by all.
Bright at times and very windy but some nice fish caught
I had to leave the match a half hour early because I had to go to work so I packed away my gear and left my keepnet behind to be weighed in. I didn’t mind leaving early too much as I hadn’t had a fish for over an hour and it began to rain again so…
Ballinakill is a beautiful lake stuffed with lovely fish but conditions were against us and she just didn’t produce the goods on the day, oh well!

A nice wild grilse released on saturday by Thomas Merkel (Germany) on beat 6. Martin's grilse took a Garry dog in very blustery conditions
Fishery manager Osgur Grieve reports on fishing from 29th August – 5th September.
We have had 17 grilse landed for the week. On Tuesday 29th fishing duo Michael Pettigrew and Neil Walker fished with us and both released a wild fish each of 3lbs from the Falls Pool and Lower Garden Pool using a Cascade. On Wednesday 30th Stephen Pay and Chris Thornton fished the morning on Beat 5 and both had a grilse each weighing 2.8lbs and 4lbs on a Black Pennell on the dropper, both of these grilse were from the Boat Pool. Later that day James Mannion (UK) had a wild grilse of 2.5lbs on a Black Pennell from the Garden Pool. Saturday 2nd saw the return of regular anglers Mick Vincent, Paddy Donegan, Albert Caffrey and Donal Chambers for the week. Paddy Donegan was first off the mark releasing a 4lbs wild grilse from the Falls on a shrimp fly, 20 minutes later Mick Vincent released a 4lbs wild grilse from the Falls using a Cascade. On Sunday 3rd visiting angler Malcolm Simpson released a 4lbs wild grilse from the Falls. Albert Caffrey released a 5.5lbs grilse from Kings on Beat 4 using a Sunray Shadow, and Mick Vincent released a 5.5lbs grilse from the Bog on Beat 4 using a Jock Scott.
Paddy Donegan, Mick Vincent, Donal Chambers, Albert Caffrey – a happy bunch on Beat 9 of the Erriff Fishery, 7 September 2017
Monday 4th was a red letter day for Paddy Donegan, releasing 3 wild grilse of 3.5lbs, 2.5lbs and 4.5lbs from the Garden Pool, Sea Pool and Falls Pool and then went on to release another of 5lbs from Colonel’s Run on Beat 6, all on a shrimp fly. Albert Caffrey also released 2 wild grilse of 4.5lbs from the Sea Pool later that day.
On Tuesday 5th Paddy Donegan was into action again releasing a 4lbs wild grilse from the Falls, again on a shrimp fly and 5 sea-trout of 0.5lbs from the Quarry Pool on Beat 2 on a Collie Dog. Mick Vincent also released 2 sea-trout of 0.5lbs. from the Quarry Pool on a Bibio.
It was great to see a few fresh fish enter the system again and the use of older traditional fly patterns such as the Black Pennell being used to good effect. At the moment the river is rising slightly to 1m and with the rain forecast for the coming few days it should re-awaken the rest of our fish up river.

Now in its third, revised and extended edition, this book – a landmark on the subject – shows how you can consistently catch specimen pike when fishing rivers, lakes, gravel pits and lochs throughout the northern hemisphere.
How to Catch Big Pike
Distinguished pike fisherman Paul Gustafson, an experienced biologist as well as a gifted angler and researcher, shows how you can develop techniques that will catch bigger pike when fishing any location. He describes how to locate the biggest fish in a fishery, the best way of catching it, and how to apply various clever techniques and the most effective tackle to achieve greater success.
His full-colour new edition includes new photographs and new, specially commissioned artwork. It covers the very latest scientific discoveries about how pike detect their prey through dedicated olfactory organs; how they use their specialised sense of smell; and what it is exactly that pike see – with obvious relevance to choice of lures.
The author has also included new material on the fishing of loughs, lakes and rivers in Ireland; on fly fishing for pike; and on how to locate record pike in a new chapter written by Fred Buller.

Ballyduff Bridge Salmon Fishery
Ballyduff Bridge fisheries control a number of beats of the Munster Blackwater. The Ballyduff Bridge beat is almost a mile long offering a huge variety of water and is particularly suited to fly fishing. Upstream near the village of Ballyhooley (a few miles outside the town of Fermoy, Cork) we have two beats. The Ballincurrig Beat is one of the most beautiful locations along the river and has an excellent piece of fly water flowing into a deep pool. Just downstream on the opposite bank we have a short but productive beat, called Magners. This beat fishes also well in high water.
