Derg
Derg Pike

Emma Stanley reports on the pike fishing in the Lower Shannon

Pike fishing is going well between  Shannonbridge and Shannon Harbour and anglers are pleased with catches this week.

Lough Derg has been producing some serious fishing and anglers out with guides Paul Bourke, Pierre Monjarret, Black Bay Lodge, Cedric Charpentier and TJs Angling are getting some great fish – though the harsh sunshine of recent days has slowed things down a little. Below is just a taste of what was being caught last week…

Another great week on the River Moy!

Jan Brinch Hansen from Denmark ready to release his first Ridge Pool salmon

The River Moy had another excellent week with over 500 salmon reported. Angling was good throughout the system with suitable water levels and all fisheries reporting plenty of action.

On the Moy Fishery, Danish flyanglers, Thomas Vinge and Jan Brinch Hansen enjoyed excellent sport on Sunday catching 4 salmon (all released) between 3 lbs. & 6 lbs. Most fish fell for a small Red Francis tied by Thomas himself. Earlier in the day, Jan had already landed a grilse on the Cloongee Fishery which was also released. Other successful anglers on the Moy Fishery included Michael Childs, UK, with an 8.5 lbs. fish on fly and William Hayes, Northern Ireland, with a salmon weighing 7.25 lbs. also on fly.

Emma Stanley, IFI, reports from the banks of the Shannon…

This week’s weather (13-19 June) has seen torrential rain and Mediterranean sunshine! Temperatures have not fell below 13 degrees Celsius during daylight hours with nights remaining humid also.  Wet weather dominated much of Monday in the lower Shannon river basin district, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were mild humid days with some sunny periods.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday were beautiful sunny, warm days with temperatures reaching 28C in Portumna on Sunday evening.

Feedback from coarse angling is positive this week with good catches being reported throughout the area of Roach, Tench of up to 60cm.

Meelick has good stocks of roach with plentiful supplies of juvenile fish.

Shannon Harbour is fishing well with Roach and Bream catches of up to 55cm.

Shannonbridge is seeing plenty of boat fishing and visitors to the area and are happy with catches of their coarse fish.

Bio Security:

Again, we would kindly ask all who use water courses to please consider biosecurity measures for themselves so to help stop the spread of invasive species in and out of the water.

This event is fished annually in memory of Noel Donnellan Ballinlough and features prominently in the events calendar for the village every year. Blustery and showery conditions greeted an excellent entry of (32 Anglers) and as always this event is a keenly contested affair between the locals and visiting anglers who come mostly from all nearby counties with a few travelling from across the Shannon.

Good bass and pollack on fly around Cork Harbour

bass
A nice bass on fly for the German anglers

Earlier in the year two German fly anglers went to the Fly Fishing Exhibition in Munich where they asked about a guide they had booked in Cobh for a week in June. Delighted at the positive response they got from the IFI stand about Richie Ryan the Eire Bass guide they were now happy about their booking. They were mainly interested in fly fishing for pollack on the fly and the prospect of a bass also. This response at the fair was relayed to Richie by one of the fly fishermen. The burden of living up to the expectations ( Jim Hendricks’ words ringing in Richie’s ears ) of the visitors was palpable…

bass
A nice bass on fly for the German angler Benedikt Goetzfrid of Topwater-Productions

Richie tells us that the first day on the fly went well even though the water clarity was poor. Plenty of pollack were caught on the fly as requested but the bass were not playing ball. Day 2 and 6 bass were nailed on fly and lure. On the third day Benedikt Goetzfrid of Topwater-Productions Germany arrived as an extra angler onboard “Sea Hawk”. He was staying at Tír Na Spideoga with the famous pike guide Greg Latour.

polack
Bene with a fly cught pollack

Bene hooked up 7 bass on the day , happy man. He was grinning from ear to ear as he’d never caught a bass before. Needless to say the guide was happy too! In fact all three tourists had never caught a bass so that was sorted. Richie was delighted that one of the visitors, Dirk Magnus, managed to catch a  good few bass on the fly on a mark which had never produced before using that method. The guide had blanked on the fly there many times also, so well done Dirk !

Day 4 produced some great pollack on the fly but only one bass. The tourists went away having seen Ireland at it’s best with the glorious weather and fishing memories to last a lifetime.

River low at Owenmore but lakes fished OK

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports:

20 June: We have had dry sunny days for the past week which does not do the river levels any good. We have also had very strong wind but when it was suitable and the boats were able to get out people have had fish. Even though the wind was strong enough on Saturday two regulars braved it. They both had seatrout and one had a grilse of about 6/7 lbs. The weather is supposed to break on Thursday and if we get rain and we have a big spring tide we are bound to have a good run of fish.

The River Feale is among the outstanding salmon and sea trout rivers of Ireland. The River rises in the mountain district of North Co Cork and flows westerly for 75 km (46 miles) through the county towns of Abbeyfeale and Listowel and enters the sea south of Ballybunion. For the final 10 kms (6 miles) of its course, it is known as the Cashen River. Throughout its meandering journey to the sea it flows through a picturesque landscape of heather bog land, fertile valleys and rolling hills. Its main tributaries, flowing from both North and South, combine to add in excess of 160 kms (100 miles) of fishable waters.

About 50% of the main River Feale and the Smearlagh River is controlled by 5 angling clubs. These clubs are some of the best angling waters and each club offers day tickets for visiting anglers.

Brown tags

Brown tag fishery: Under the salmon tagging regulations, this year the River Feale is designated as a brown tag fishery. The brown tags for the River Feale bear the code F3. Anglers must affix a brown tag along with a blue tag to any salmon which is retained. This means that salmon retained on the River Feale will have two tags attached. All brown tags (including 1st tag) will be issued from IFI officers ONLY . Please ring 087-7639236 to arrange to receive your first brown tag prior to commencing fishing

  • Additional brown tags will only be issued by IFI staff, they may be contacted at 087-7639236 and they will arrange to meet and issue an additional tag upon verification that the previous brown tag has been used, i.e. a fish has been caught and recorded in the logbook.
  • 1 brown tag will be issued at a time to each angler.
  • If you acquired a 1 day or 21 day licence which has expired, or you have finished fishing for the season, and you have not used the brown tag then this must be surrendered to an IFI officer prior to departure by phoning 087-7639236.  IFI would like to thank you for your co-operation with this.
  • If an angler has used his brown tag or doesn’t have a brown tag in his possession to use then he must fish catch and release methods, i.e.single barbless hook and no worms.
  • Brown tags will continue to be issued until the angling quota is reached.

Salmon on the tides at Costello and Fermoyle

Terry Gallagher has the angling report from Costello & Fermoyle Fisheries for june so far…

After a very long dry period we finally got our first flood in months on the the night of 9th June. As soon as the river started to rise salmon & sea trout held up in Casla Bay started to pour into the system and the fishing really kicked off. In a period of 9 days 17 salmon & 5 sea were landed bringing the total for the season so far to 19 salmon & 8 sea trout.

First salmon of the season fell to Micheal Dillon, a cracking fish of 7lbs 8ozs taken from the Cabbage Pool on River Beat 1 (RB1) with a size 12 Silver Stoat.. Next up was Padhraic McDonagh with a grilse of 3lbs 8ozs also from the Cabbage pool. Sean Kelly was thrilled to record 6 salmon ranging 3lbs 8ozs to 7lbs over 2 days. All were bars of silver and all fell to a size 12 Black Shrimp. Geoffrey Fitzjohn had a very successful four and a half hours on the middle river where he landed 3 salmon, 2 of 5lbs and 1 of 6lbs. All fresh and all yet again all were taken on a size 12 Black Shrimp.

John Maloney & Neil Spellacy fished RB1. John landed 2 grilse of 4lbs as well as a cracking sea trout of 2lbs. Neil was not disappointed with his day as he banked a salmon of 4lbs.

Finally, Brian Curran, was delighted to catch his 1st ever Casla salmon while he fished the inflow to Fermoyle Lough. Another 4lbs bar of silver taken on a Teal Blue & Silver.

At the time of writing, fish are appearing on the tides which promises plenty of more sport to come.

Owenea quiet as water levels low

Monday 29th May  to Sunday 11th June 2017

The Owenea was plagued by low water for over the first week. The second week brought higher levels but still lower than desirable except for 1 good (but dirty) flood reading 0.40m which occurred on Saturday 10th June. The gauge average over the fortnight read 0.14 metres. The fishery was fairly quiet with only 15 visiting rods fishing over the fortnight. To date we have 7 salmon recorded in the register.

On the 30th May, Alan Watson recorded an 8½lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 8. On the 1st June Alan reported a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 8. On the 4th Alan logged a 3lb grilse caught & released on a fly from beat 8. On the 6th, Michael McCrory recorded a 4lb grilse caught on a fly from beat 7. On the 9th, Alan Watson logged a 7½lb salmon caught on a fly from beat 8. On the 11th, John Joe Doherty reported a 3lb grilse caught on a spinner from beat 9 and Paul Brennan accounted for an 8lb salmon caught on a spinner from beat 9.
