Great fishing on the River Nore using most methods

Dan O’Neill reports from the River Nore…

Adjusting to the higher water levels over the past few weeks has been interesting for sure. It is amazing how different a river can be and fish with just the slightest drop or hike in water level. Fishing the wet fly is as most know my favorite method. Watching the fly and working it through the swing is something that you become engrossed in. Then when it all comes together, and the take happens its just mesmerizing. I have been teaching quite a lot over the past 2 weeks. Growing my knowledge on different ways to approach different casting issues. I remember when I was younger being told I could be anything I wanted to be. I regularly hear it now also on different videos and clips. Put your mind to it and you can do it. I feel that firstly the heart must be in it to engage the mind fully. Looking on Facebook I see casters, fly tyers and anglers everyday putting up content and pictures. To see their passion and knowledge is phenomenal but to them they sometimes don’t see it. The best are usually very humble and have their hearts and minds fully set on their passion.

Once I had finished thinking of the above I finished my bankside coffee and wiped off close to 50 red ants that had a feast on my forearm, it was time to get to work. This week I guided over 20 people from far and wide. A couple of early 4am starts shook the cobwebs off and resulted in some wonderful trout fishing. Hatches were strong especially in the evening time. We fished gnats, olives and sedges close to the overhanging sallys.

Watching a dry fly sail on the water and then get sipped is just a feeling that never gets old. The first time seeing it remains the same for every take thereafter. I never minded the size of the trout taking the fly it was always the sight of a trout taking the fly off the surface that made me happy.

I did fish wet flies along the plantation pool and had some great takes. Still on the Greenwell’s Glory and some sedge patterns. I did also try something different to me. I tied a pheasant tail nymph on a light hook with the intention of fishing it on the surface. I powdered the fly and fished it dead drift. I was surprised how many trout I got and how close to me they took given conditions. Well worth a try and happy I gave it a shot. This is something I saw Tom Rosenbauer do from Orvis.

Great to see the trout fishing improving a bit across the board. The Nore fished brilliantly over the past week. I am taking bookings for group classes now. I have 4 days left in July. If you would like more information on the day contact me on the details below or on Facebook messenger. The days can be a great way to expand your knowledge on your chosen discipline.

The latest episode of Ireland on the Fly focuses on the crisis affecting the Atlantic salmon

This week’s Ireland on the Fly features an episode from a series I’ve been doing with Jim Murray of Activist Anglers called The Last Salmon which is focused on the crisis affecting the Atlantic salmon.

This week’s episode is with Ken Whelan discussing ranching – and the work done at Burrishoole – as an option to be considered for anglers.

Burrishoole Fishery

The Last Salmon:
‘We don’t have time, we need to intervene now.’  Ken Whelan addresses ranching as a possible angler solution

Internationally renowned fishery scientist, Ken Whelan, issues a call to action on The Last Salmon podcast.

Ken says that ranching can and will work to help improve salmon numbers in relation to supporting a rod fishery for anglers and he explains to us the background to its successful development and implementation – albeit with caveats and cautions.

Likening it to racehorse breeding, he points to the Burrishoole ranching programme and the work of Dr. David Piggins and says this is the model that can be followed for supporting a rod fishery in lieu of wild stock.

Whilst wild fish conservation measures must continue to be carried out, drastic and innovative action is needed, says Ken, if we are not to see entire salmon stocks disappear.

Superb trout fishing to dries and nymphs on the Nore

Peter Driver is back with a weekly round up from Piscari-Fly…

How’s The Fishing?

Not a bad week of fishing for Peter & Mark. Peter was on the water guiding clients from America, Dublin & Cork. All enjoyed fishing the Nore.

Mark & Peter grabbed few hours early in the morning last Wednesday on the Nore. Hitting a likely spot with good numbers. They had some great fishing in the runs but only the shallows. Faster deeper runs weren’t holding as many fish yet. So they fished the margins and edges of runs and recalled some great numbers of fish between them over the course of a two hour session. They were heading for home but couldn’t resist another quick cast in the next beat up on the Nore near the car. Planned to fish 15mins then swap over. Peter had 8 nice fish, before Mark took his turn and manage 9 with a minute to go. Good fun and great practice for competitions those short burst sessions.

On Thursday Mark got back out to fish the Dinan a tributery fo the River Nore further upstream. Mark fished with Roger for a 3hour session. Mark started on straight dry and recalled fishing to be great and stayed away from nymphs and had great action. Roger stucked to dry dropper and nymphs and had alot of fish also. But found all fish taken on the dropper nymph. So fish were looking up on the warm day.

Since then Mark got out last night for quick 1.5hr session on his local club on the Upper Nore. Reported some great fish with 34 (20cm+) fish to the net. With others lost. Great conditions with plenty of fly life and great rise on.

If interested in a good day on the rivers come down to the Nore. Give us a buzz here to point you in the right direction. [email protected] or [email protected].

Leaders

A leader is a critical component of your fly fishing set up and can make all the difference in how your system performs. If you have the perfect fly line, and perfect balanced rod and reel, without a good leader set up, you can still have a hard time making a nice presentation.

Ballinlough Fishery produces some fine brown and rainbow trout

Ballinlough near Westport

Gerry Hoban reports from Ballinlough

Since the re-oping (1st May) of the Ballinlough Fishery near Westport, Co. Mayo, a total of 35 rods fished the lake catching 56 rainbow trout (35 released). Fourteen brown trout were also caught, 7 of which were released.

Most successful flies included Montana Black, March Brown as well as Boobie and Buzzer patterns. Heaviest overall fish was a fine 5 lbs. rainbow trout.

We also received a report from Andy Fogarty who recently fished the lake: “I fished this venue on Thursday 23rd May with an 80 year old fly angler who has mobility issues. My friend had not fished for several years due to the inaccessibility of several fisheries. Ballinlough was very accessible and we had a lovely fishing experience. We fished for five hours and met 9 lovely fish. We kept four fish, two rainbows and two brownies. All the fish were about 2lbs weight and were in excellent condition.”

Permits are available online at https://permits.fishinginireland.info/product-category/mayo/ballin-lough-fishery/

Ballinlough is a shallow, limestone lake of 22 hectares located 3.2km north of Westport and is managed by IFI. It is a rich lake with a marl bottom and has been stocked with rainbow trout and brown trout. The fish are known to be free rising, and are encouraged by hatches of olives, sedges and wind-blown terrestrials. Trout can be taken on traditional wet flies including Peter Ross, Bibio, Invicta to mention but a few. Streamer patterns such as the Minkie and nymphs can also work well. Dry flies, however, can also provide great sport particularly during evening times and during sedge hatches.

Grilse appearing in Galway but May was slow for anglers

Despite improved water levels for much of the month, with 2-4 gates open, catches were low again during May, with 10 fish recorded for the month. Some good fish were caught upstream in Cong and on the Clare River, and good numbers of fish were also seen on the underwater camera in the weir pool, suggesting most fish were running straight through to the upper waters.

Fergal Cormican kicked off the catches for May on the 6th with a beautiful 16lbs fish on the fly. Sean O’Toole fished the spinner and landed a 7lbs fish on the 8th.

Fergal Cormican with his 16lbs fly-caught fish from Galway

The same day Coleman Counihan had a fish just under 10lbs on fly. On the 9th Kevin Dolan had a fine 13.5lbs springer on shrimp. Fergal Cormican struck again on the 13th with a fish of 8.5lbs, and the next day Jean le Moal, a regular French visitor, had a fish of 8lbs on spinner. Brisn King landed an 8lbs salmon on the 24th to shrimp, but the 29th was the best day of the month. Sean O’Toole had a grilse of 4.5lbs on spinner; pappy Cotter had a second grilse of 5lbs on shrimp, and Eoin Warner landed a lovely 8.5lbs fish on the fly.

At the time of writing, fresh fish are entering the river daily, with grilse starting to dominate the run, and hopefully this is the start of a good grilse run.

Irish Angling Update 🎣 31 May 2024

Out on the sea

Well, that’s the end of May. What can you say? The weather in May is rarely your friend. Even in the last week the winds conspired against anglers up and down the country. Temperatures were not too bad, but the wind often made things feel cooler, and often getting afloat was complicated or impossible. And the rain, well that was all about where you were during the week. Some people had hardly any, but the thunder storms and cloudbursts over other parts saw up to 260% of the average. So let’s welcome June and hopefully a bit of settled weather…

salmon
American angler Sam with a fin perfect fish immediately after losing a double figured fish on the Blackwater Salmon and Trout Fishery

The previously mentioned rain saw the levels on the Moy shoot up last week and a total catch of eighty-four salmon was reported. Falling water and improving conditions saw a few springers landed on the Blackwater and grilse were also seen. Meanwhile low water in Killarney saw only a handful of fish landed on the Laune and Lough Leane. There was just one salmon reported on Lough Currane and the Owenmore Fishery is expecting sea trout fishing to improve.

Mayfly – river gold.

As May draws to a close we still have plenty of Mayfly reports from rivers and lakes up and down the country. Hatches everywhere have slowed right down, in many places the Mayfly fishing is well finished for another year. Having said that Corrib had a sudden resurgence and some impressive catches were had – ask Tom Doc, more on that below. Keith McDonnell has a great write up on what Mayfly fishing means to river anglers. His trials and tribulations will be recognised by anglers of any code, and he captures the essence of this special season. Dan O’Neill reports from the Nore where nypmhs were the order of the day. It was more mayflys for Paddy Dunworth on the Deel where it was Greenwells and mayfly nymphs that tempted the trout. Mayfly nymphs were also the medicine for the Piscarifly lads and Sheelin trout, though we’re also hearing that the murrough hatch is underway there now. Finally anyone looking to hear more about the Mayfly on Corrib (Tom Doc), Arrow, Melvin, Key and Sheelin can tune into the Ireland on The Fly Podcast where they talk to Eamonn Ross and Jackie Mahon.

Jamie had some great tench in Cavan

IASCaire Feeder Fishing Club held the last round of their Spring League on Lough Garadice. Catches were mainly made up of smaller roach but there were a few good hybrids sprinkled in amongst them. At the other end of the country anglers fishing the Ottewill Cup on Inniscarra had some super fishing with weights of over 17kg and a daily average of 9kg. Ger Power and his nephew Jamie enjoyed a great day in Cavan catching some lovely tench. The Newbridge Pike Anglers also took an opportunity to fish for tench, this time on a trip to Leitrim, and the early start was well rewarded with lovely looking tench to 5lb. Meanwhile in Longford visiting anglers from the UK had tremendous fishing with Melview Lodge. They had numerous bream over 7lb and one super fish of 9lb 3oz.

First Irish pike for Chris 114cm
First ever pike for Chris 114cm

Igor Pavlović enjoyed a three hour session on the River Inny recently which produced two stunning pike – one of which was Igor’s new personal best at 17lb. Four anglers from Wigan fishing with Peadar O’Brein had 57 pike in the Carrickmacross area. Two Klaus’s fishing 4 days with Bodo Funke had lots of pike but the best were their 5 over 100cm including one magic fish of 108cm. It was big fish for first time pike angler from the USA, Chris, who had a 114cm beauty on Lough Derg. He’ll be a long time trying to break that PB but has already booked Damian Culliney for round 2 later this year. Also on Derg were the competitors in the Lough Derg Predator Challenge. Twenty-eight teams took part but only one could be victorious and the honours went to Team Catch&Release. In another competition on the Shannon system Jay Cooke of the Leinster Pike Anglers had 12 fish to over 18lb to take first place in their 2 day event.

first blue shark 2024
Dave Edwards with the first blue shark of 2024 wins Catch of the Week

Being confined to Killala Bay due to challenging weather further out to sea did not limit five anglers last Monday on board Leah who ended up catching 13 species including homlyn ray.  The Kent Stainless Fishing Society had a great day off the Saltees at Kilmore Quay last weekend fishing with skipper Walter Rankin. Wreck fishing off Wicklow has improved and skipper Kit Dunne made sure his anglers were stuck into some fine lumps of pollack and coalfish. To the southwest now and Mark Gannon reports that there is some really enjoyable fishing to be be had as family groups are getting some great species fishing, as well as landing specimen skate! Staying in Courtmacsherry, Dave Edwards got the first blue sharks of the season last Friday, which wins him catch of the week. Boats from Dingle and Caherciveen are getting good fishing too and the smiling faces tell their own stories. Finally, Troy Francis won the weekend’s West Cork and District SAC competition, which was fished in East Cork.

Other news…

The NCFFI is inviting young anglers to join a series of sessions covering a range of float fishing techniques and develop with them as they look to form a pool of anglers to progress to championship level. Find out more at Join NCFFI to learn new angling skills on Saturday June 8th

And now the weather…

Tomorrow will be dry with long spells of sunshine. Highest temperatures of 16 to 20°C, a little cooler in the northwest, in light to moderate northwesterly winds. Turning cloudier on Sunday and Monday light rain or drizzle at times. Becoming cooler and more unsettled through next week.

We expect that there will be a lot anglers out this June Bank Holiday weekend, especially with a gorgeous Saturday on the way, so why not read over our Angler Safety Checklist here. Don’t forget to check the forecast before heading off and if you’re going to sea, check the tides.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Len with some lovely Bream and Tench.

Kevin Lyons reports that regular anglers Len and John from the UK were over for their annual fishing trip to Ireland to stay at Melview Fishing Lodge. On arrival it was straight into mixing up some prebait ready to bait up in the evening. The next morning it was up and out the door by 4am, and this continued for the duration of their stay. Kevin told us that they are out early every year despite the weather. Well the prebaiting and early mornings paid off for them, on their 4th day they managed a few Bream to over the 7lb mark and then on their 5th day John managed his personal best Irish Bream of 9lb 3oz. Both Len and John made the comment that when you catch fish of this quality you don’t worry about numbers of fish you catch. Kevin said, “the guys always have good catches when they are here but this one will be one to remember for them.”
