Unlike our previous fixture, the weather didn’t work in our favour for the clubs’ latest fixture. The Longstrand was to be the original venue but it was unfishable so Broadstrand was used as the back up venue. Broadstrand is usually a comfortable sheltered venue but conditions on the night made it hard on all the anglers.

Jason Convery had a good first two hours putting dogfish on the card. A late burst from Mark O Sullivan would see him catch up with Jason but the night belonged to Barry O Rourke who had a good last two hours. Barry found dogfish at distance adding a conger in amongst them, then a bass of 51cm and finally the best fish on the night an 87cm bullhuss. Well done Barry.
1st- Barry O Rourke – 12 fish= 416pts
2nd- Mark O Sullivan – 7 fish = 270pts
3rd- Jason Convery -5 fish= 233pts

 2023 Summary
There were 203 wild salmon, 55 Ranched salmon and 30 sea trout caught this season.
2023 season was a tough angling season with a good number of salmon showing but not taking the fly due to the warm and humid weather. The water levels were also a little bit of a problem, but the anglers pushed through the conditions producing a good rod catch for the season which was higher than last year’s considering we were closed for most of June.
Development
New stiles and footBridges have continued to be replaced during the year where needed by IFI staff along with community scheme members.
Acknowledgements
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the IFI Ballinakill staff who assisted with the smooth running and protection of the fishery during the year. Also we would like to thank the land owners along the fishery as well as the Community Scheme staff for all their hard work with maintenance and angling access to the fishery during the year. Finally, the anglers who visited the fishery, thanks to all anglers following our catch and release program to ensure a healthier river for the coming years and look forward to seeing you all again in 2024.
The 2023 EFSA Boat & Line Class Championships got underway in Cobh on Saturday 16th of September. The event had originally been scheduled for 2020 but was postponed due to Covid & rescheduled for 2021 – which was also postponed for the same reason. The event was organised & run by EFSA Ireland in collaboration with Cobh Sea Angling Club.
Indicated numbers in 2020 were 80 to 100 competitors but with rising costs & a shortage of suitable accommodation due to the refugee crisis the entry number came down to 59 when the check in opened. 11 Sections had confirmed entries which were greatly appreciated.
The format for the event was ‘Line Class’ for the first 2 days & ‘All Tackle’ for the last 3 days. All 5 days results to count for the Boat Championship.
Sunday September 17th commenced with the mandatory Standing Committee meeting which was attended by delegates from 9 Sections. The Commodore Hotel was the venue for the Opening Ceremony at 16.00. A large attendance was addressed by EFSA Ireland Chairman George McCullough who welcomed all in attendance & thanked them for making the journey. He was followed by EFSA Ireland Hon. Secretary Warren Doyle who outlined the timelines & procedures for the week ahead.
EFSA President Marcus Wuest was then called upon to review the parade of National Flags after which he wished everyone well for the week’s fishing & then declared the Championships open.
Day 1 on Monday 18th September had the anglers assembled on Kennedy Pier in Cobh at 7.30am. The 9 chartered angling boats some of which travelled from Ports outside Cork Harbour – Youghal, Dungarvan, Kinsale & Union Hall – stood off while the crews were assembled. It had been intimated at the opening ceremony that fishing might possibly be confined to the large harbour for which Cork is famous. This was confirmed as conditions outside were deemed to be dangerous & would also be very uncomfortable. The area was being badly affected by the remnants of Atlantic Storm – Oliver.
Angling commenced at anchor at around 10.00am with a minimum size limit of 25 centimetres & mackerel not permitted. All anglers had to use the Tronix/HTO X8 20-pound (9kg) braid provided by the organisers. Bait supplied was mackerel & calamari squid. Bait fishing for fresh mackerel proved to be very hit & miss. As the day progressed many of the boats were seen moving around the harbour to find the fish.
Andy Smith
Lines up after 6 hours fishing saw the boats unloaded by 18.00. Bad news greeted the anglers on return to port. The Boat Commodore in consultation with the skippers deemed it too dangerous to put to sea on Tuesday. Storm force gales were forecast with a 100% likelihood of treacherous conditions on board. It was therefore announced that Day 1 result would be the result for the Line Class segment of the Championship.
The results’ committee (Christy Cloak, George McCullough, Tommy Squires, Warren Doyle) had the results calculated & posted at 20.30 in The Commodore Hotel.

Day 3 had the anglers assembled on the pier at 8.00am. Weather conditions had not improved sufficiently to permit fishing outside the harbour, so we were once again confined. This was the start of the All-Tackle segment. The supplied bait was mackerel & ragworm. The size limit was reduced to 18 centimetres in the harbour.
Conditions were trying as the storm had not fully dissipated & the swell was variable throughout the day. At lines up many anglers were happy to be getting ashore.
Boat winners on Day 3 were: Torunn Handeland, Francis Couzinet, Shay McDonnell, Heiko Dreier (IRE), Lars Hellum, Pat Condon, Carl Julien (FRA), Petter Skudal, Simon Elgrishi (FRA).
There were 4 anglers on 200% after Day 3 (2): Petter Skudal, Francis Couzinet, Shay McDonnell, Pat Condon. Total number of fish caught & returned alive on fishing day 2 was 1,275.
Norway A had moved into pole position in the International Teams followed by Ireland & France.
Torunn Handeland was still best Lady, however, Shay McDonnel had risen to best Senior.
Day 4 (3) was delayed allowing the wind to dissipate further & to allow the boats to fish outside the harbour. The boats departed at 9.30 & fishing commenced at 11.00am at anchor.
Fishing was slow & the banker fish – wrasse, pollack & others did not show in their usual numbers. The storm had certainly disrupted the feeding pattern of fish in general. Fish numbers for boat winners were well down on anticipated figures.
Boat winners for Day 4 (3) were: Shay McDonnell, Jim Presley, Petter Skudal, Didier Marest, Piotrek Nowakowski (IRE), Warren Doyle, Heiko Dreier, Arjan Stelwage, Francis Couzinet.
3 anglers remained with maximum points – Petter Skudal, Francis Couzinet & Shay McDonnell.
Ladies, Seniors & International team positions remained the same as Day 3(2).
The number of fish caught & returned alive was 965.
Piotr Nowakowski 55cm Cod
The final day of competition saw the anglers looking forward to a better day’s fishing & boats departed at 8.30am. Supplied bait was boosted by the addition of the squid left over after Day 2 was aborted. The Atlantic swell was still forecast at over 4 metres, so the boats were anchored inshore.
At days end at 16.00 anglers were happy to be making it ashore as the wind was building for the anticipated storm due in over the weekend.
Boat winners on Day 5(4) were: Carl Julien, Didier Marest, Shay McDonnell, Simon Elgrishi, Lars Hellum, Petter Skudal, Tor Arne Rygg, Francis Couzinet, Torunn Handeland.
There were 911 fish caught & released on fishing day 4.
Additional species caught since day 1 were: Conger Eel, Red Gurnard, Tub Gurnard, 3 Bearded Rockling, Red Mullet, Ballan Wrasse, Cuckoo Wrasse, Pollack, Coalfish, Pouting, Mackerel, Scad, Cod, Ling, Bass, Poor Cod, Dragonet, Plaice.
Total number of fish caught was 4,288.
The final results were posted at 18.15 & queries were answered in time for the Gala Dinner.
Anglers & guests were seated at 8pm for a superb meal which was very professionally served & enjoyed by all in attendance.
The presentation of awards took place immediately after the meal.
First up were the Line Class awards as listed at day 1. It was followed by the affixing of the highly sought after Pins which were applied by EFSA President Marcus Wuest. EFSA Ireland Chairman George McCullough applied the Gold Pin for Marcus.

Newport SAC hosted their final competition of the season on Sunday, September 17th. This was a teams event which meant that the total number of fish caught by each of the 4 team members were combined together to calculate the overall winners. This was a tightly fought contest and in the end, the top two teams were only separated by 4 fish / 20 points.
The weather played its part and the event took place in the beautiful, calm seas of Clew Bay. Some of the boats moved during the designated fishing times to try to gain a better advantage over the others. Lines were up at the designated time of 4.30pm and all boats returned to Newport Quay where team members met to discuss their respective catches.
The prize presentation took place in the Grainne Uaille (as they were winners of last year’s local shield) and they also sponsored some hot food for the hungry anglers during the presentation). All of the prizes were presented by Pat Moran Jnr (representing the main sponsor – J.Coffey construction).

Lough Derg is a firm favourite with predator anglers and it’s no surprise why when you consider the number of 100cm plus pike landed by anglers there every year. Add to that the abundance of good sized perch and a healthy trout population there’s every reason to spend time on the lake throwing lures for whatever may bite.
The trout season may be over for another year, but with plenty of pike and perch action yet to come there’s no reason to stop fishing on this iconic lake. We join Paul Bourke for some angling updates…
25 September: Love it when on the first drift of the morning, a green missile smashes your guests bait broadside… Fight was unreal from this fish. Was only 101 cms but punched above its size.

The VDE Baggers faced far more clement conditions at their match last weekend as calm, sunny weather replaced the near hurricane and rain of the previous outing. Anglers soon found that there was an ‘insane’ amount of roach all along the stretch and that decent bags were on the cards.

But it was newcomer Johhny Keith that romped home ahead of the usual favourites, with 250 fish on the whip for a whopping 18+ kg. Second was Aaron Nabc Hutchman, almost 6 kg lighter at 12.2, while Mick Carr was a further kilo behind on 11.21.
Rebels SAC returned to Monatray for another session at the weekend. Everything was in threir favour, moon phase, tides, and even the bit of stir that most dread, but gets the REBELS fired up. Shane Olden reports..
Monatrae bay round 2
Right guy’s, another day down for the rebels in West Waterford saw the lads come back to right the wrong we had in the glorious weather a few weeks back.
On arrival the venue had plenty of storm blown weed on the shoreline with some interesting foreign objects in the mix. A frightening amount of plastics and buckets, and unfortunately 2 seal carcases. On the day we had 13 anglers fishing . Winds were S/SW and gusting to 32mph on and off which meant most if not all beaches would be unfishable.
As it was scheduled to fish the bay anyway today we didn’t mind one bit and held hope for some codling until a real nasty heavy sea faring fog blanketed the area. This is a change that’s never welcome at any time as it dampens fishing and most times shutting an area down to a blank. Not to be deterred, the rebels hunkered down and pushed on as there was points to be put on the board and some of the new guy’s showing good promise picking up high rankings. It is great to see lads learning the sport and coming on strong.
First to find the fish and great to see him back out on the front line showing how it’s done was JIM COTTER with a coalie. He was followed by JACOB MURPHY with a bass. Next was JIM MELLIS JNR with a coalie. On again was JIM MELLIS SNR with a coalie as well. Keeping the pressure on, bringing a 38cm plaice and a new club record was JACOB MURPHY.
NIALL FORREST was starting to pick up pace with a coalie followed by a pair of dog fish and putting in a great performance on only his 3rd comp ever attended and taking his place on the board again to keep the older more experienced REBELS under pressure.
NOAH TAHRAN was next to find fish ending up with a pair of dog fish to contribute to his over all placing on the master angler leader board . Unfortunately the phrase fail to prepare, prepare to fail came to mind as only 6 guy’s out of 13 were able to get fresh peeler crab on time for the day. Those without would have put forward a better show for the club and a better reflection of the venue if they had crab, so hopefully a lesson learned going forward for guys. None the less there was good heart and hunger shown for the sport and lads drove on regardless. Baits used on the day were crab, lug, black lug, rag worm, sandeel, mackerel and razor clam. 5 species entertained us in the form of bass, coalies, flounder, plaice and dogfish. Not to be snuffed at with the very heavy fog by any means, and I thought the lads did well to produce a variety of fish where normally a bad fog would spell out a blank.
Placings on the day were as follows
1ST – JACOB MURPHY
2ND – NIALL FORREST
3RD – JIM COTTER
4TH – NOAH TAHRAN
5TH – JIM MELLIS JNR
6TH – JIM MELLIS SNR
Thank you to all our followers , sponsors and friends of the club , and we look forward to another good report in 2 weeks time from the Youghal area and hopefully a better draw of fish . CATCH YOU ON THE NEXT ONE

The Salmon Season maybe over tomorrow but we still have 12 day’s of C&R Sea Trout Fishing.
29/9/2023 As we all know tomorrow is the last day of the 2023 Salmon season, we all know what that means, yes you have it, it’s the traditional Bacon and Cabbage night in the Lobster Bar and all are welcome, so come on down and celebrate your catch with fine Bacon and Cabbage and finish it off with a fine pint in the Lobster Bar. Now today’s and yesterday’s action, I start with yesterday’s action on C&R River Inny, there were 3 Salmon caught fly yesterday, We stay on the Bank of the C&R River Inny and for good reason because there was four Salmon caught on the fly today. Now we head for the Big Lake where some great action in all departments, there was 3 Salmon caught and released on the fly, in the trolling department there was one Salmon caught and released, there were also a nice few Trout caught on the drift and the troll. Now we head upstream to the Commeragh River, they say the early bird catches the worm, there was one enthusiastic Salmon angler fishing on the Commeragh at 7 am, sadly I take it that the angler’s line was slack going by my WhatsApple. Wind W light followed by good cloud cover. Staying with the weather Kerry is on a yellow rain warning tomorrow, the amount forecasted for the Waterville Fishery 21.4mm.
30/9/23 We start this last day of the Salmon Season on an early morning text and a furious angler who saw wormers on the Inny. Now for the rest of today’s action we start on the lake. C&R Currane angler Mr. Brian O’Rourke had 2 seatrout followed by 6 brownies on the fly. Now we head across the valley to the C&R River Inny where there was some good action, going by the C&R Inny farmer who reports that four C&R Inny fly anglers had one Salmon each.
Now my catch of the day goes to Anglers who had to go to a stock lake because Lough Currane was too rough. So they headed out looking for some action and they found it at the end of a Rainbow as you can see by the photo.
Now we head for the end of the Salmon Season party in the Lobster Bar and the crack was good especially when Robert was presented with the wooden spoon for the 2023 Salmon Season, one Currane angler said he’s making a habit of it, all I can say is Robert, good luck for the 2024 season and that goes for all the Waterville Fishery anglers. I finish the 2023 Salmon season on the Bacon and Cabbage party by saying on behalf of all the Currane anglers and non-anglers, a big thank you to the Lobster Bar Management and all their staff for a great night out. Wind SSE and veered SSW fresh to strong with gusts up to 69 Km/h followed heavy rain in the morning.
1/10/2023 The wild Trout Currane anglers were all quiet going by my WhatsApple, but don’t be surprised if there is an update. Wind West veered SW light to fresh followed by reasonable cloud cover. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 14.6 mm.
2/10/2023 Mr. Michael O’Sullivan of [email protected] reports there were a few Trout caught on the drift and going back to yesterday’s manipulations there were a good few Trout caught on the drift and my apologies in the delay on reporting yesterday’s catches and yes guilty as charged. Wind light and variable WSW followed by reasonable cloud cover.
3/10/2023 The Wild Currane Trout Anglers flies and their lines were all slack this day, so you can understand why my WhatsApple was all quiet and if this is false news I will update you in tomorrow’s notes. Wind WNW veered West late this afternoon, followed by the odd heavy shower.
Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.
The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-
the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. Ger Power was back at Belturbet over the weekend. this time he was targeting bigger fish having decided to try for pike.
The weather made fishing fairly tough over the weekend, but Ger stuck it out and managed to land a beautiful 22Lb pike. The fish fell for a large lure – a line through trout. And what made it all better was that it was his PB.
