A few more good cod for Fuego

Des O’Connell, skipper of Fuego fishing out of Caherciveen, has had another good day on the cod with fish to 12lbs and more, with some good sized pollock in amongst them. Des reports that the mackerel were patchy enough, but with the Fuego consistently landing these good sized cod over the last week or two his clients won’t mind!

Owenmore in Kerry gets its first salmon of the season

A view over the Owenmore Valley

Frank Maunsell from the Owenmore Fishery reports that they are off the mark with Salmon. On Saturday an 8 lb sea liced Salmon was caught and there were others seen moving up the River.

The Seatrout are also starting to arrive in numbers and the forecast rain will hopefully keep the fishing going during the week. There is more rain from Thursday and Friday and with a bit of luck there’ll be fishing all through the week end.

Irish Angling Update 18 June 2021

This past week has seen more unsettled weather in the west, with heavy rain in some parts and coldness in a wind that never really eased. In contrast, parts of the south and southwest saw long periods of sunshine and it felt almost a bit like summer when temperatures reached the low twenties for a while.

Salmon don’t mind a bit of rain, and as a result salmon fishing has been picking up further, particularly on a number of fisheries in the west and southwest. There were good catches reported on the Ilen and the Bandon, while the week for salmon and sea trout anglers on Lough Currane has been a rather quiet one. The Moy is still fishing fairly well with another 178 fish reported caught up to June 13th and anglers on the Erriff enjoyed relatively good early season sport as well. Very good salmon fishing has also been reported from the lower stretches of the Munster Blackwater.

With the mayfly over, trout reports from the loughs are getting more scarce. On Lough Conn, however, anglers still enjoyed reasonable trout fishing despite persistent cool winds hampering fly life.

River trout fishing is improving and with water temperatures on the increase and rivers dropping we should receive more river reports in the weeks to come. Anglers at Mount Julie on the River Nore already benefited from these improved conditions and had good fishing on nymphs, wets and dries.

There were plenty of trout in the 30cm range feeding on the Nore

Sea angling is in full swing around the coast with boat and shore anglers all getting their share.

The first blue shark of the season and some super ling were reported from West Cork which makes our Catch of the Week.

Charter boats in Kerry & Clare had some excellent fishing for mixed species and some hard-fighting spurdog, while Galway Bay also produced great spurs up to specimen weight!

Great variety fishing was reported from Killala Bay, while further up the coast in Sligo & Donegal charter boats experienced nice cod and pollack fishing.

South Shore Sea Angling Club were back on the Wicklow beaches for the first competition of the year, while sea angling clubs along the west coast were also back in action!

Up north, Killybegs Mariners had another week of excellent shore and rock fishing catching a multitude of different species ranging from bass and sea trout to fine wrasse and even some mini species.

It has been an exceptionally quiet week on the pike angling front and coarse angling reports weren’t plentiful either. However, it is very nice to see that more and more coarse angling clubs mainly in the Midlands are getting back holding competitions and training sessions.

A new study reveals the migration route of Atlantic salmon at sea and raises concerns about effects of climate change. The study, led by the Arctic University of Norway, involved a cooperative research study by ten Universities and Institutions across Europe, including Inland Fisheries Ireland. The full study, ‘Redefining the oceanic distribution of Atlantic salmon,’ can be found at Nature.com at https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-021-91137-y

And now the weather…

Tomorrow, Saturday, will be a largely dry day with sunny spells, though it will turn cloudier from the west as the day goes on. Sunday will see rain spreading across the country from the west and it will turn cooler with highest temperatures between 12 and 14 degrees. It will remaining unsettled for the remainder of the week with showers or longer spells of rain at times and temperature near average or slightly below.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Great variety fishing in Killala Bay

Great fishing reported from Killala Bay. See Donal Kennedy’s report below…

Great fishing on Saturday 12th June when a party of anglers set out from Killala Harbour for a day’s fishing in Killala Bay. The winds were moderate south westerly. The first drift was over sandy ground and it was not long until one of the anglers hooked into a big ray only to loose it near the boat. As the drift continued more rays were caught along with dabs and lesser spotted dogfish.

The skipper moved out to deeper water and drifted over rocky ground where a great variety of fish were caught with many being returned alive to the water. The catches included pollack, ling, pouting, coalfish, ballan wrasse, cuckoo wrasse, spur dog along with plenty of mackerel . All returned to harbour well pleased with the day’s fishing.

To book a day’s fishing in Killala Bay contact Donal Kennedy on +353 (0)86 8174509 or visit www.dkennedyangling.ie.

Edenderry Coarse Anglers hold their final training session on the canal

Edenderry CAC report on the last of their recent training sessions where the going was tough:

Today was the last of the 15 peg training sessions for Edenderry CAC, another gruelling session to be honest but it was the same for everyone. Anthony Kelly fished a brilliant match to take the top honours, a well-deserved win for him, on behalf of the club thanks to all who supported the three-match sessions and hopefully we’ll be back to normal for our July match.

Mayfly hatches slowing down on Conn but some Caenis hatches noticeable

A fine trout from Lough Conn

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

Cold and windy weather throughout the week made for some difficult fishing. Persistent south easterly cool winds or north westerly winds hampered fly life on both lakes. Mayfly hatches are slowing down with some Caenis hatches noticeable.

From Murphy’s Boat Hire in south Conn, two groups of anglers had some good fishing while dodging some unpleasant weather. John Flanagan, Austin Finnerty and Mike Sweeney from Loughrea, had some reasonable fishing over two days along the Massbrook Shore and Victoria Bay. A large proportion of the fish were smaller with the biggest approximately 1.5 lbs., all caught on wet mayfly patterns. All trout were released.  Liam Mc Hugh and Tom Cooley from Edenderry had approximately 6 trout each to the boat on wet mayflies, all released.

In Cloghans Bay, from Kelly’s Boat Hire, a party of 8 anglers from Cork, led by Reg O’ Keefe, had a mixed few days angling. Tough weather conditions impacted their sport, but overall, they had a good few trout to the boats. The heaviest fish caught was a trout for almost 5 lbs., on an Olive Bumble. All fish were released.  One of the party also hooked and lost a salmon after a few minutes. Boats can be hired from Kelly’s Boat Hire by contacting Carmel or Padraig on +353 (0)96 27010.

In North Conn, Ian Wise and John Warren from Crossmolina had some fair fishing along the islands outside Bog Bay. Ian commented that winter is not gone yet with that cold nip in the air. They had a few trout to the boat, best 1.5 lbs. on olives and dabblers.

Ken Mc Loughlin from Castlebar had a trout in Inishlea Bay on a Green Peter, while Padraic Kelly, also Castlebar, had reasonable fishing in Castlehill Bay and released one small trout.

Padraic Kelly releasing a small trout in Lough Conn

Donal Rafferty from Dublin City had two days fishing with local keen angler Peter Roche. They had some fair fishing along the Brackwansha Shore. They both had a few fish to the boat while Donal caught a 3 lbs. trout, and the following day had a trout of 2.5 lbs. on a Claret Octopus.  His best visit ever to Lough Conn! All fish were released.

Lough Conn also reports 10 salmon (mostly grilse) caught on the troll.

Enfield Coarse Angling Club have first competition of the year

Royal Enfield CAC enjoyed their first open on the Royal Canal in over 12 months. Bright sunshine and a busy canal made for small catches but an enjoyable time was had by all. Great to see a few tench turning up in bright weather.
