Irish Angling Update – 3 June 2021

Summer finally made a very belated appearance over the past week, as for the first time this year, we had periods of genuine warmth and sunshine over most of the country. It’s not normally the sort of weather associated with good fishing, but, I’m sure any of us that made it out on the water appreciated not having to wear multiple layers and waterproofs…

The change in the weather seems to have kicked things into gear up in Mayo as the River Moy recorded plenty of salmon caught throughout the system. Most of the fisheries reported a few fish with East Mayo Anglers fishery top of the pile producing a whopping 32 salmon for the week. The largest salmon also came from East Mayo water, tipping the scales at 14lbs. Reports were scarce from elsewhere in the country other than down in the SW, where anglers on the Cork rivers have been encountering some fish. Lough Currane was quiet for the week but the River Inny threw up a fish or two.

The annual Mayfly hatch is now tailing off on most of our loughs and fishing has been patchy to say the least during this year’s hatch. On Loughs Conn & Cullin there was some decent fishing early last week with one boat landing 15 trout, but the bright sunshine towards the end of the week impacted the fishing, with fewer trout reported for that period. Over on Lough Arrow, the spent gnat fishing has tapered off but not before Wednesday evening saw one last big fall of gnat with the lucky anglers who were out that evening reporting fine catches including this 3.2lbs trout for Paul Colreavy.

Coarse angling reports have yet to get fully going this season but some anglers have been hitting it hard with both Edenderry Coarse Anglers and Go & Catch Feeder Team publishing reports for the second week running. The guys seem to be making up for lost time and taking every opportunity to get on the water.

Nice bag from L. Garadice for Go & Catch Feeder Team

The hot sunny weather did little to hamper sea anglers this past week and we have reports of great fishing from all around the coast. Both Killibegs Mariners and West Cork Bass had a crack at the bass with a couple of fish to show for their efforts. However, it is the boat fishing that really shone this week, starting off in Cork where Jim Clohessy had a first day out with his fishing buddies for over a year where they sought and found a few nice Common Skate.

Rob’ McClean with a nice Skate, landed, measured and ready for release

Up the coast in Clare, both the Lady Gwen and the Clare Dragoon had some great fishing out of Carrigaholt with good catches of Pollack, Coalfish and Ling all under fabulous blue skies. Further on up the west coast in Galway Bay, skippers Kevin MacGabhainn and John Fleming also had some super Pollack fishing with a few Spurdog thrown in for good measure. Spurdog were also in the mix in Killala Bay as anglers fishing with Donal Kennedy aboard the MV Leah remembered an old angling friend who is no longer with us.

Over in Sligo, skipper Tommy McCallion reported good fishing for the second week in a row while further north, in Donegal, anglers on the Fiona Tee had some excellent Pollack while anglers with Saoire Mara Charters had some great variety including two Bluemouth, plenty of Mackerel, Pollack, Ling, Cod, Coalfish, Cuckoo Wrasse, Grey Gurnard, Pouting and Poor Cod. Finally, over on the east coast, Wicklow Boat Charters reports their first catches of tope for the season with hopefully plenty more of them to come over the coming weeks.

Finally, just before going to press, we have received a late angling report from angling guide Bodo Funke in the Boyle area and it was worth waiting for. In a short session of two hours or so, Bodo’s clients managed a total of 21 pike including fish of 104, 102, 101, 93, 90, 90, 90, 87, 86, 83, 80, & 80cm. We were about to name this super session as Catch of the Week but….

Two 100cm+ pike netted at the same time!

…Just as I was about to press the ‘send’ button, we got another pike report in that just pips Bodo’s haul to this week’s Catch of the Week! Pauric McMahon was fishing for trout using a black fritz fly on 6lbs leader when he managed to hook and land this 35lb pike.

Pauric’s fabulous 35lbs pike landed on 6lb leader wins this week’s Catch of the Week

A pike that size is always worthy of Catch of the Week, but to catch it with such light tackle is exceptional. Hats off to Pauric.

And now the weather…

The relatively balmy conditions look set to continue for the next week with most of the country experiencing decent temperatures over that period. The eastern half of the country will remain relatively dry but the west coast will fare worse, with showers developing today, some of which will be heavy. That pattern of dry in the east, damper in the west looks set to continue but temperatures will be heading towards 20 degrees by the end of next week.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Salmon fishing improves across the south west, bigger fish and some grilse running

Stuart Mcdowell with a beautiful fish landed at Ballincurrig, Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery

Angling report for week ended 30th May

River Lee: 5 salmon caught for the week on the Lee, best 12lbs on worm and fly.  Water conditions perfect  for fishing.

river
River Bandon

River Bandon: The Bandon fished very well last week with over 15 fish that we’ve heard of. The river was running high and clear for most of the week topped up by a few spates here and there. The quality of the fish was really good with those short deep fish that the Bandon is famous for. There were a good few fish caught and lost on the fly. Spinning and worms accounted for the rest. The river is still in great order at the time of writing and prospects are good for this week.

West Cork Rivers: 3 salmon reported for the Glengarriff River, best 11lbs by a local angler.  14 salmon report for the Ilen River, best 11lbs by a syndicate angler.

Munster Blackwater: Salmon angling improved early in the week with some large salmon recorded. The rain put a move on the fish in the lower catchment with a lot of fish movement reported between Fermoy and Mallow. As the week closed and the weather improved, the river was beginning to come back in perfect condition especially in the upper reaches and the coming week promises to be ideal conditions for fishing.

River Laune and Killarney Lakes: No reports on catches, there was reports of large fish seen running the Laune, but very little angling effort this week. There was a slight chop on Lough Leane on the 30th and five boats out trolling.  Water levels are very high. Over the weekend there wasn’t a cloud in the sky, which must have been what kept anglers from fishing the Laune.

Sensational pike on the fly for trout angler Pauric

Pauric's fabulous 35lbs pike landed on 6lb leader wins this week's Catch of the Week

Angler Pauric McMahon reports on a welcome surprise while trout fishing on his local lake:

“I was out trout fishing my local club water in Monaghan on Sunday when I hooked into this pike. It took a self-tied pea head black Fritz lure on 6lbs leader, lucky it was just hooked in the scissors and after 30 mins I had it to the bank.”

“It was safely released after a quick weigh in at just over 35lbs.
I spent all winter after something like this on the fly but it just goes to show it’s all about luck.”

I would add perseverance to that Pauric, and it’s a worthy winner of our Catch of the Week.

Spectacular pike fishing in Boyle!

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland reported on some spectacular pike fish! Please see his full report below…

This past week on the water was most interesting and had some highs and lows… nah, way more highs really!
With weather ranging from sunny, hot and flat calm to almost perfect conditions. We had a lot of action, many nice fish and really cool fishing moments, including sight-fished sun bathing pike on the fly and double hook-ups with meter pike (2 X 100+) on lures.

However every now and then you can get a better than average days fishing!. Thankfully this time of year this happens more frequently.
Certainly Peter, his son Dennis and friend Mark had a great day with us. A steady trickle of mostly small fish in the morning til all “Hell broke loose” when both Peter and Mark both hooked into a good fish each. A quick look on the Humminbird Solix confirmed what I suspected we found an area where bait fish were congregating, so I quickly reached for the I-pilot remote and spot locked the Terrova. Both fish had to be netted together and allowed for a nice photo opportunity!
Two 1m plus pike netted together…not a common photo opportunity!
The action lasted for two hours and a bunch of fish all over 80cm came to the boat plus the usual few more that didn’t like their picture taken.
Total 21 pike: 104, 102, 101, 93, 90, 90, 90, 87, 86, 83, 80, 80…
By the way, we are open for bookings and would love to take you out on your fishing trip soon… Call us or drop us a message.

Bright sunshine makes angling difficult on Loughs Conn & Cullin

One of Peter Roche's trout on Lough Cullin before releasing

Kevin O’Boyle reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

Bright sunshine especially in the later part of the week made angling difficult for trout anglers. Most anglers commented that fishing was tough going and as the week progressed it got more difficult.  At the start of the week Peter Roche and Gary Binley had good fishing on Lough Cullin with approximately 15 trout to the boat. Fifty per cent were considered keepers.  Best fishing was a drift from Garrison Island towards the railway bridge. These trout were mostly caught on wet Mayfly patterns and the Golden Olive Bumble. They also had 2 sea trout for just under a pound. All fish were released.

A party of anglers fishing on Lough Conn from Murphy’s Boat Hire caught a few trout but mostly encountered small trout, and naturally released all. A group of anglers in two boats fishing North Conn from Cloonamoyne Fishery had some good sport but 80% were small fish.

Twenty-eight keepers were reported from Lough Conn for the week. Poor weather conditions were reflected in the sparse fly life on the lakes.

Four salmon were reported caught trolling on Lough Conn for the week, two near the River Deel, one near Cloghans and one at Massbrook. Black and copper Tobys were the most popular lure.

Moy continues to fish well despite changeable conditions

A week of changeable weather, from cold North Easterly winds and daytime air temperatures ranging from 10°C to 14°C in the first half of the week, to blue skies, brilliant sunshine and temperatures reaching a high of 21°C by Sunday. Angling disimproved for most anglers as the week went on. Overall, 96 salmon were reported from the Moy catchment for the week.

Ballina Salmon Anglers report 15 salmon for the week, smaller fish averaging between 4lbs. and 5 lbs. weight.

Knockmore Salmon anglers recorded 5 salmon for the week, the best of which weighed 12 lbs., caught on a worm, while the Attymass Fishery reported 2 salmon. Byrne’s Fishery had 3 salmon, the best weighing 10 lbs.

Lovely fish of 11lbs. caught by Ryan Goldrick on the Knockmore Aalmon Anglers’ water. It was Ryan’s first ever salmon!

Coolcronan Salmon Fishery reported their first salmon of the season for 10 lbs., caught spinning.

Armstrong’s Fishery had 7 salmon for the week, the best weighing 11lbs., caught spinning.

The Foxford Fishery reported 9 Salmon, the best weighing 13 lbs., all caught on the prawn.

Foxford town had 2 salmon and Foxford Salmon Anglers reported 11 salmon from their waters.

Gannon’s Fishery reported 6 salmon, the best weighing 13lbs. and caught on the prawn.

Four salmon were caught on the Cloongee Fishery. Eddie Doherty had 2 of these on a Flying C. Tommy Treacy, age 6 from Ballinasloe fishing with his father caught his first salmon on a worm for 11 lbs. Congratulations and well done Tommy!

Roy Wilson with a 13 lbs. salmon caught in East Mayo Anglers waters

East Mayo Anglers recorded a whopping 32 salmon for the week with 11 of these released alive. Mick Seery from Ballinrobe, had the heaviest salmon for 14 lbs., on a worm.  A couple of other salmon tipped the scales at 12 lbs. and 13 lbs. Best angling methods were fly and spinning. Water levels recorded on upper Moy at Ballylahan Bridge ranged from 1.2m down to a low of 0.6m at the weekend.

John Geary with a 12 lbs. fish from East Mayo

Reports from different fisheries in the catchment say that the Moy is now in great condition for the coming week.

Reports from the River Deel inform that 4 salmon were caught for the week. Two of these were caught upstream of Crossmolina by Ballina man Mark O’Malley.

The Ballyvary River had 2 salmon reported caught, one by Liam Mc Ellin for 9 lbs.

Great variety fishing for Saoire Mara Charters

Saoire Mara Charters reported excellent mixed fishing for their clients. Conditions were great with a comfortable swell, and as a result a number of different species were caught including two bluemouth ,plenty mackerel, pollack, ling, cod, coalfish, cuckoo wrasse, grey gurnard, pouting and poor cod.

Moy Estuary sees good run of sea trout

The last week of May brought soft south winds with a slight rise in temperatures on the Moy estuary where Judd Ruane reported a good run of sea trout. Visiting anglers and local boats enjoyed good angling with fish up to 4 lbs.  Also, there was a good run of mackerel in Killala Bay with much bird activity working on the sandeels. A grand sight to behold.

Skuas and skates from Cork Harbour

cork harbour skate
Skate

Jim Clohessey was out on the water at the weekend with Rob McClean and Gavin Moran. It was a trip that was a long time coming. The restrictions of the past year really curtailed the fishing efforts of “Team Skua”. The lads made amends on Saturday…

It was the first time we had fished together in over a year! We picked up where we left off, skate hunting.

The mackerel were easy to find

We took an early launch and headed west for a change. We weren’t expecting to get mackerel and were delighted when we came upon a frenzy off the Old Head. The place was a boiling mass of life – birds, dolphins, whales and fish, thick Sandeel shoals and loads of big plump mackerel. It was a super sight (Rob took a great video clip).

We tried a couple of likely skate areas. One area was firing well. Rob had the biggest of the session at 168cm long. Gavin chalked up his first. He dealt with the brutality of the fight well.

I had a handy sized fish that nearly managed to break me in the fight. I was wrecked after it. It wasn’t a particularly big fish. Maybe just smart using the tide!

angler and skate
A very weary Jim with his small skate “This skate seemed to kite and hold in the tide (not a huge run). I’d had my drag set to bigger fish but this one seemed to match the drag. Progress was in inches at a go.”

The reefs were a disappointment. Big tides combined with a bloom that has the water very coloured. Nothing new, happens each year. You’d forget how it effects the fishing.

We finished the day at anchor getting plagued by doggies.

All told. It was a grand day out for May with a great craic factor.

Big pollack, bass and good boat fishing for Killybegs Mariners Sac

Members of Killybegs Mariners Sac enjoyed excellent lure fishing for big pollack and bass during the week.

Please see there report below…

A great shore achievement for the lads getting bass within the parish of Killybegs with the modern Japanese lures that can be cast into real shallow ground over rocks where other lures would be lost. A lot of searching and casting into marks that were never lure fished before to find these fish…so well done lads lovely fishing. Also some great pollack got!

During the week Killybegs Mariners had great boat fishing with some lovely fish for the lads venturing to sea on their boats.

Well done to Cormac! After many years of fishing getting his first bluemouth whilst out with Adrian Molloy on Deep Blue along with lots of ling, wrasse, coalies etc. on the deep water reef!
