Rebel SAC reports on the their second match after the Summer. Their first competition after the summer was moved to Monetrae after the unexpected fine weather saw the Front Strand was inundated by sun worshippers. It was a bit early in the year for the venue and just one flounder, 24cm was caught. With thoughts of that last match in their minds they headed to Garylucas on September 16th to fish the tide up and down from 5pm to 10pm. Shane from the Rebels reports
Our competition saw 9 anglers fish as we had some guys drop out on the day and couldn’t attend . The wind and gusts of up to 28 mph caused havoc for most venues but as we tracked it over the week I knew it would be at our backs to an extent and take any weed off shore and that it did. Anglers brought baits ranging from fresh crab, lug, black lug, razor, rag worm, frozen sandeel, mackerel and frozen black wraps. To describe the fishing on the day it was patchy and scratchy, as I call it, at its best but brought a bit of variety, and as we know variety it’s the spice of life and always makes up for slow or poor fishing.
First to find the fish was myself with a first for me – a garfish of 53cm. I have only tried for them once before with only a few casts so it was a welcome scratch to that itch. Hot on my heels with the blackest dog fish I ever seen was Jim Mellis jr. Over the next 40 mins I missed 2 more garfish one even slack lined but nothing to come if it. On again was Jim Mellis with another dog fish, then a mackerel. Tapping him on the shoulder was Noah Tahran with a lovely sea trout, but unfortunately they don’t count on our comps as with Jim Mellis jr’s mackerel doesn’t count either.

Fish started to pop up across the line with lads battling hard to gain points at all distances with all tactics . The guys that caught fish on the day were placed as follows :
1ST PLACE 219 POINTS WAS JIM MELLIS JNR ,
2ND PLACE WITH 140 POINTS WAS NOAH TAHRAN ,
3RD PLACE 100 points WAS NIALL FORREST ,
4TH PLACE with 98 POINTS WAS GABRIEL MATEJKO ,
5TH PLACE WITH 58 POINTS WAS MYSELF ,
6TH PLACE WITH 58 POINTS WAS DEAN MURPHY ,
7TH PLACE WAS ANDREI DRUTU
8TH PLACE WITH 43 POINTS WAS RAD MARTINOVIC .
8 out of 9 anglers caught fish and a good show for some of the new guys, but a lot of missed takes presumably from schoolies hitting baits hard and dropping them just as quick .
There was 7 species caught on the day. They were garfish, bass, sea trout, mackerel, flounder, dog fish, and eel’s . All in all another well ran comp with great feed back from all. There was even a few smiley faces for those that enjoyed it the most.
Go fishing…
Next competition
Our next comp is Saturday the 30th of September brings us back to the Youghal direction as usual , and should produce good results and justify a good report as the crab should be switching on the autumn peel and hopefully turning Youghal on for us .

The Limerick County Pike Angling Association headed up the country for the third round of their winter league last week. Fishing conditions were near perfect, with low winds and little rain. It wasn’t long before texts were flying around as anglers were into fish, and it was shaping up to be a tight contest. Most of the fish were on the wrong side of 10lb, so the opportunity was there to grab the biggest fish prize, and that opportunity was taken as a fish of 13lb 2oz was landed, which looked like topping the table. A 20lb+ fish was briefly on the end of the line before throwing the hook, but then Seamus Coffee came in with a 13lb 9oz fish to finally take the biggest fish prize by a few ounces. So, an eventful day for all

13/9/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet in all departments today, so on that note we head down Murphy’s weather road, on the weather front Kerry was on a yellow rain warning. Wind SSW fresh to strong followed by gusts up to 63 Km/h and overcast followed by rain at times. Amount rain forecasted is 41mm?
14/9/2023 The Currane anglers are still waiting for the flood that never was as of yet, on the manipulations of the Currane anglers this day all I can say is again my WhatsApple was all quiet on the fly line as well as the Currane trolling lines. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 12.5 mm. Wind light NE and variable from ENE to the NW
15/9/2023 At least one salmon caught on the troll, one boat had 4 juniors on the drift. Good few brownies to reported on the drift. 1 salmon caught on the Inny on fly and one on spin. Amount of rainfall yesterday was 8.3mm. Wind light NE veered NNE followed by rain this morning.
16/9/2023 The Currane anglers were all quiet. On the Inny front one could see the gravel quiet clearly at the Inny Bridge, need I say more. Wind NE fresh to strong followed by good cloud cover.
17/9/2023 The Hampshire Hogs are back, and I can say without of any contradiction they started in style in the C&R department. Hampshire Hog Mr. Perter Ruffle caught and released two Grilse. Fellow Hampshire Hog Mr. Nigel Henshaw sadly lost a good fish. On that note we head down stream to the famous Butler Pool where Hampshire www.watervillegolflinks.ie Hog Mr. Trevor Dewberry reported that it was all quiet and the same goes for the rest of the Waterville Fishery. Just for the record the Hampshire Hogs are fishing out www.thecrescentwaterville.ie and fishing with watervilleboats@mail.com and www.fishingwithdom.com. I will finish tonight’s report with the Mad Fisherman and his YouTube channel, all I can say is to the Mad Fisherman, keep up the great work of promoting the Waterville fishery. Wind NNE light and variable followed by good cloud cover.
18/9/2023 Straight to the Hampshire Hogs report on today’s manipulations and I quote,
…just a couple of C&R Trout today, the best was in the 2lb class. With any luck there is a strong wind forecasted late this evening and yellow rain warning it might liven the Salmon.
Well there’s no argument to that. Wind NW and veered WNW followed by good cloud cover.
19/9/23 The Currane Hampshire Hogs take all the headlines on a wild Lough Currane today, here is their report on today’s action,
Hi Vincent,
it certainly was! Gave up about 2.30, a 4lb grilse C&R and a 2lb trout for Currane angler Mr. Trevor Dewberry, Mr. Nigel Henshaw, Mr. Pete Ruffle went on the river but nothing to show for it.
Cheers.
20/09/2023 7 C&R salmon caught Inny 5 on fly , good few juniors C&R on the lake.
Again it’s the Hampshire Hogs that takes all the Salmon and Sea Trout headlines so it’s over to Currane angler Mr. Trevor Dewberry for today’s action,
Hi Vincent, a 6lb C&R grilse for me and a 4lb C&R grilse for Peter, plus 4 sea trout between us. Cheers, Trevor.
As you would say Vince, Just for the record all today’s C&R were all caught on the troll, there was no fly fishing today because the lake was very dirty after last night’s 22.5 mm rain. Staying with the rainfall you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know the C&R Inny had a few anglers manipulating their skills and as of yet my WhatsApple was all quiet but watch this post. Wind West fresh followed by good cloud cover and the odd shower. Hampshire Hogs are staying at www.thecrescentwaterville.ie and fishing out of and with watervilleboats@gmail.com and www.fishingwithdom.com
Inland Fisheries Ireland wishes to remind anglers that the Conservation of Sea Trout (No.7 or Kerry District) Waterville Area Bye-Law No. 971 of 2019 remains in effect. This Bye-law prohibits the retention and possession of any sea trout (Salmo trutta L.) taken by any fishing engine or by rod and line in the Waterville area i.e. that part of the sea eastward of a line drawn from the most westerly point of Bolus Head to the most westerly point of Lamb’s Head and to all the waters discharging in to it.
The Bye-Law mainly affects seatrout fishing on :-
the river Inny (Knockmoyle) and its tributaries
the waters of the Waterville system, including the Waterville River, Lough Currane, the Cummeragh River and all their tributary rivers and lakes
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. For more details see:

The Leinster Pike Anglers have had to wait a while to get their winter league going as they had to cancel a couple of recent events due to warm weather. But they finally got things off the mark last week as they headed to a river venue to kick their season off. And it got off to a flying start, with plenty of fish coming to the net including a couple of fine fish weighing just over 17lb. Anto Lennon thought he had the biggest fish points swen up with his pike of 17.11lb, but was pipped to the post by a matter of grammes as Jan Rutowski brought in a fish of 17.14lb. So it was a great start to their league, and we hope to hear plenty more from them over the coming months.
Results as follows:
1st….James Byrne 11 fish 49lb 8oz
2nd….Anthony Lennon 9 fish 43lb 10oz
3rd….Rodney Gaynor 11 fish 42lb 8oz
Pools pairs
1st….James Byrne & Anthony Lennon 20 fish 93lb 2oz
2nd….Rodney Gaynor & Fran Crosbie 21 fish 71lb 15 oz

Well done to the ten man teams who travelled from across the provinces to participate in this years championships and to Leinster coarse fishing federation for hosting.
If you want to be part of the 2024 championship check contact your council. Leinster and Munster have already published their qualifying events taking place over the winter months.
Cormac Walsh of the Lure Fishing Podcast has had the best week of his bass fishing year so far. Cormac thinks that the perfect new moon tide, not too big or not too small, which coincided with some high tides into darkness, switched it on big time.
He fished the early morning tides last week too, and they produced some fish on metals at distance, but as soon as high tide crept into darkness, the fish really came on the feed.
In the darkness, it was deadly shallow divers with a slow retrieve – just letting the lure do the work – that accounted for most of the fish, with some decent bass in the mix too.
The foul weather has unsettled things for now, but Cormac can’t complain after that week. Roll on the next set of tides.
Eamonn Conway of Táin Flyfishing will be hosting a euro-nymphing workshop on the River Fane on Saturday, September 30th. There are limited places available, so contact Eamonn to book your slot. September 30th will be the final day of the brown trout season on the Fane, but the fishing remains open until October 12th for salmon and sea trout.
Eamonn has been putting in the hours chasing Fane trout this September with some excellent results.
The Indian summer is a distant memory and we are back to Orange and Yellow rainfall weather warnings for the southern half of the country up until 6pm on Friday, with small boat warnings for the whole weekend. Southern rivers can expect water gauges to rise to levels not seen since the middle of August and temperatures to drop a degree or two – maybe even bringing on some better fishing for our inland fisheries once the floods subside.
We start with our pike anglers this week, and pikers from the midlands and further afield had their biggest event of the year with the Lough Ree King of the Lake competition. Over 80 boats took to the water there in search of the lough’s big, green fish-guzzlers. Also after pike was well known sea fishing guide, David Norman, who travelled north to hook up with Pike on the Fly Guide and test their skills catching northern pike – on the fly. Lough Derg has also produced the goods for anglers targeting predatory fish, but this time both trout and pike were the species in the crosshairs of trolled lures (and trolled lures were in the crosshairs of one highly predatory, but tiny, trout).
Trout anglers on Lough O’Flynn fished the Maloney/Keady Cup last weekend; fishing was downright tough in the bright sun, but perseverance paid off and good fish were caught. On loughs Conn and Cullin, the fishing was pretty good for the anglers who ventured out, but there were few enough of those. Ceri Jones visited Lough Arrow towards the end of August where he shared a boat with local club secretary Colin Dodd, landing a couple each but rising many more.
Following on from International Women’s Fly Fishing Day, which was held last weekend, there is an exciting opportunity for women interested in learning about fly fishing to attend an open day, hosted by the Irish Ladies Fly Fishing Association, which will be happening at Laois Angling Centre on Saturday 23rd September. No experience is necessary, but booking is essential.

From our shores, the Menapia SAC in the south east had a smoothie bonanza as anglers fishing their club event landed 65 smooth hounds over the course of an evening’s fishing – winning our Catch of the Week in the process – while also in Wexford, Cormac Walsh has been eking out the bass in slack tides. From the Donegal shore, the Killybegs Mariners SAC had a great turnout as 29 club members fished their first league outing – they report that Donegal Bay is alive with fish (and whales) at the moment – including the odd rod caught trigger fish!
