Shad anglers – handling brochure

shad

Scientific monitoring has been carried out weekly at St Mullins since April under IFI’s EU Habitat Directive Species Monitoring Programme.

There have been mixed shad angling reports so far this year. The average size of shad caught initially were quite small with some larger specimen-sized fish caught last weekend. Angling catch also provides a useful barometer of shad numbers and sizes.

Shad must always be treated with the utmost care and respect when angling for them.

All shad angling is Catch and Release and minimal handling is always encouraged.

This year as a guide for anglers a Shad Leaflet – Shad Consevation and Handling has been published and is being distributed to anglers in St Mullins.

Bass return to Wexford shores

Jonathan with a beautiful Bass
Jonathan with a beautiful Bass

Jonathan Paul Philips is a keen angler based in North Wexford. Jonathan reports that, after a very slow start of the season, North Wexford beaches finally started to produce solid run of schoolie bass.

Jonathan and his friends had a couple of busy sessions with bags of 20 bass per session. Fish were in the different schoolie size range from 42 to 57 cms. Best baits proven to be ragworm again which is nearly a tradition along the east coast at this time of the year.  Lads encountered nice size flounders among the catches too. Despite hard trying smoothounds were not present at this stage yet,  but this could change any time soon.

If anyone fancy a session with Jonathan for bass, smoothounds and later in the season for tope, can drop him a line at [email protected] or on WhatsApp at 0894791052.

A few more salmon reported from Carrowmore

A happy Pat O'Toole with a nice Carrowmore fish before release

Seamus Henry, Fishery Manager, Bangor Erris Angling Club reports…

Despite the poor weather conditions, Carrowmore Lake produced 7 salmon for the week. The average weight was around 7 lbs. which is quite small for the time of year. Among the successful anglers were Phil Donohue, Pat O’Toole and K. Finnegan. Most successful flies included various Dabbler and Bumble patterns as well as Green Peters.

Great pike fishing on lure and fly for guests of Angling Services Ireland in Boyle

Mario Thonhauser with a fantastic fly-caught pike

Bodo Funke of Angling Services Ireland reports excellent pike action on both lure and fly for his clients.

Avid fly angler and regular visitor to Boyle, Mario Thonhauser, had great success fishing various bait fish patterns. Mario landed several double figure pike close to the meter during the week fishing different density lines.

The fly worked really well for Mario

Earlier in the week, first timers Peter and Kenny from Northern Ireland also enjoyed excellent sport. While Peter preferred the fly, Kenny scored with the lure rod. Both anglers had various pike up to the 1 meter mark.

Nice one for Peter
Kenny successful with the lures

And last but not least, the guide himself contributed another fine Esox of 110cm!

Fine pike for Bodo

Lough Arrow sees good mayfly fishing with trout up to 8 lbs.

Declan Smith with a magnificent trout
At last the fishing has improved. Following the sporadic hatches last week, there were really good hatches on Sunday and Monday. Angler numbers have increased over the weekend and everyone enjoyed a great fishing day on Sunday. Due to the strong winds and overcast skies, most boats caught fish.
Night time buzzers
Muriel, Yvonne and Sarah Frazer had a very successful day dapping, catching and releasing plenty of trout. Colin and Finian Dodd had four trout, and Simon Steele had three trout to 1½lb on a Grey Wulff. The catch of the week goes to Declan Smith from Dundalk, catching and releasing a trout which he estimated at 8lb, caught on spent in Muck Bay.

Nice water sees further improvement in fishing on the Moy

Ridge Pool Ballina

Steve Schreck reports on a good week on the River Moy.

Last week gave a very positive outlook for things to come, as catch figures on the Moy catchment more than doubled, with 47 salmon reported caught, compared to the 21 salmon the week before. Water levels at Ballylahan bridge on Monday topped the 1m mark, steadily dropping over the following two days, to even out at around 0.5m towards the end of the week.

Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 4 salmon for the week, 1 on the spinner and 3 on the worm (3.5lbs, 5lbs, 5.5lbs and 6lbs).

Armstrong Fishery recorded 5 salmon for the week, caught on shrimp, worm and spinner, with the best fish weighing in at 12lbs.

Gannon’s Fishery had one salmon, caught on a spinner (6lbs).

The Foxford Fishery reported 1 fish caught and released on the prawn (9lbs).

Foxford Salmon Anglers had a good week, reporting 10 fish, mostly caught on spinners.

Cloongee Fishery reported 2 salmon for the week caught spinning (9lbs & 10.5lbs).

East Mayo Anglers recorded 24 salmon for the week (10 released), 6 fish on the spinner, 13 on the fly and 5 on the worm. Eight of the salmon were double figure fish.

French Anglers do well with 186 Pike at Melview Fishing Lodge

Smiles for Nicolas

Regular French visitors to Melview Fishing Lodge, Julian and Nicolas, brought a pair of first timers with them this year, and what a great first experience it was for newcomers Manu and Stephane.

Fishing in pairs in two boats, the guys opted to use both hard and soft lures during their week’s fishing and both seemed to do the trick, as they managed to land 186 Pike to 95 cm.

Smiles for Nicolas

Unfortunately for the guys, there were some better fish to over the 100cm that managed to come unstuck at the boat on a few occasions. That’s fishing though, and the guys did not let that affect their holiday one bit, as a great time was had by all.

A first Irish Pike for Stephane

We hope that Manu and Stephane are truly hooked on Pike fishing in Ireland now and we will be seeing them again in the future.

Pike hungry in Monaghan for French connection

Peadar O’Brien of Irish Fishing guides hasn’t been chasing pike for a while, but when he got back on the water this week with regular French visitor and old pal Jean Feinte, he hadn’t lost the knack. The pair fished lures on light tackle and had great craic catching jacks in the lakes around Monaghan. There was the odd bigger fish thrown into the mix as well, with fish hungry and in feeding mode brought on by good conditions and large numbers of spawning roach in the shallows.

Jean Feinte is only eighty something years of age and has featured on these web pages regularly over the years, it is great to welcome him back on Irish waters once again and it is equally great that he managed to get Peadar back in action!
