15/9/2021 The Currane anglers were on the drift and caught a few Juniors plus a few Brown Trout for their efforts, on that note we head for the C&R Inny anglers, they caught two Salmon for their efforts. Wind NNW light and variable throughout the day with reasonable cloud cover.
16/9/2021 The Waterville fishery was all quiet on all fronts. Wind South light to fresh with good cloud cover and very humid.
Commeragh in Flood today!
17/9/2021 Made another good flood last night, so as you can imagine the Inny anglers were up reasonably early and making their way to their favourite spots. There were a good few Catch and Release this day. Now we head out to Lough Currane, in the drifting department just a few Trout caught. Wind NNW light and variable with reasonable cloud cover.
18/9/2021 They say the early bird catches the worm, well in this case it was the early angler that caught a Salmon on the Commeragh early this morning. Now we head down stream to the big lake and the Currane Fly Drifters, there were six boats manipulating their skills and they caught a few Trout for their efforts and on that note we head across to the C&R River Inny and there were two caught. Wind SSW light and overcast.
Copal – Lough Currane
19/9/2021 The Currane drifters just caught a few Trout on the drift. On the Salmon front it was all quiet on the Western front. Now we head for the video and photo department, as you can see there was a light wind on the Southside. Wind WNW light with reasonable cloud cover.
20/9/2021 Normally one would start with the Waterville Fishery facts of the day but this evening I was looking at a fantastic photo of Sunset on Cloonknocklin by photographer, Mr. James Bannon, you could say that it is James’s catch of the day!
Sunset on Cloonknocklin courtesy of Mr. James Bannon
Now we head out on to Lough Currane to the Currane drifters and for all their efforts just a few Juniors and Brown Trout caught on the fly. Now we head for a back date in the C&R Inny department and for good reason, there was one well satisfied Cork angler who was celebrating all his Salmon releases over the weekend, and it was not the beer talking, it was the flying C during the day and the beer and partying came in the evening. Wind NNW light with reasonable cloud cover at times.
21/9/2021 Straight to the Currane Drifters who were manipulating their skills and caught a few Juniors and Brown Trout this day. Now we head for the C&R River Inny and for good reason, the water levels maybe low but this didn’t deter one fly angler from catching and releasing one Salmon, fair play to the Inny Angler. Wind SE and veered SW light and overcast all day.
22/9/2021 The Currane anglers were all quiet on the Western front. Wind SW light with reasonable cloud in the morning, come afternoon bright and sunny with reasonable cloud cover at times.
Breaking News just in, there were a Good few trout caught on the drift today in coffee bay.
The rivers and lakes of Waterville drain a large catchment and are regarded by many as the foremost Salmon and Sea-Trout fishery in the country. The lake system is well developed with access to boats and guides being readily available to the tourist angler. The Sea-Trout caught here are renowned for their size and quantity. Mick Flanagan of Midlands Angling and Shooting has been out on the loughs in search of trout. Mick fished Lough Lene and had just the one fish to show for his efforts, a nice rainbow. Mick reports that Willie Horne and pal Murray Lowe were over from Scotland for a week’s fishing and Willie caught a lovely brown trout from Ennell, where the fishing was also tough going.
Fishing has been hard for fly anglers on the midland loughs this season, the high water temperatures keeping the fish off the surface for much of it.

The Camlin and District Anglers along with Lough Ree Angling Hub have released this taster promo video from the launch of their 2021 event which was held on September 11th and 12th.
A well run event by any standards and one we are proud to sponsor:
Two men in Dundalk have been convicted of illegally killing pike and have been ordered to pay fines following prosecutions taken by Inland Fisheries Ireland.
Mr. Ernestas Gaska, with an address of Riverside Drive, Dundalk Co. Louth, received a €300 fine following his conviction at Dundalk District Court on Thursday, September 2nd 2021.
Also in Dundalk District Court on the same date, Mr. Arturas Bagvilas, with an address of Bothair Na Carraig in Dundalk, received a €300 fine as well, following his conviction.
Inland Fisheries Ireland Officers, who had been on routine fisheries patrol in the area, outlined the facts of the case to the court of how Mr Gaska and Mr. Bagvilas had been observed in the act of illegal fishing on Drumcah Lough, taking and killing pike.
As a statutory consequence of the conviction for use of a boat contrary to Section 285 (A)(1) of the Fisheries (Consolidation) Act 1959, the boat that was seized by Inland Fisheries Ireland is now automatically forfeited.
Evidence in relation to the offence was given before Judge Eirinn McKiernan and breaches of Fisheries legislation occurred on Sunday, October 11th last year, in the townland of Annagh, close to the Louth and Monaghan border.
According to Inland Fisheries Ireland, which is the state agency responsible for the protection and conservation of freshwater fish and habitats, there was an increase in illegal fishing activity recorded by its Officers around the country last year.
The state agency initiated 119 prosecutions for fisheries-related offences in 2020, compared with 67 prosecutions in 2019. It also seized 1,287 illegal fishing items last year, up from 788 items the year before.
To report suspicions of illegal fishing, members of the public are encouraged to call Inland Fisheries Ireland’s confidential hotline number on 0818 34 74 24, which is open 24 hours a day.
On an apple-ripe September morning, through the mist-chill fields I went, with a pitch-fork on my shoulder, less for use than for devilment.
Patrick Kavanagh captures it well and those anglers who set their early morning alarms in the last week may have seen the mist-chill fields first hand. The summer mornings that saw Kavanagh ‘shovelling up eels again’ from the drain are becoming more of a distant memory now, as the evenings slowly begin to draw in upon us…
It’s close to the stony grey soil of Kavanagh country where we start his week, the Irish Feedermasters Final was held on Lough Muckno last Sunday, Sept 12th, and well known angler Philip Jackson topped the field to take the title. A much scaled down Monaghan Pairs event is currently taking place at the venue this week.

September is the month of the year when coarse angling should take centre stage in Ireland, with back to back festivals held each week on reliable venues around the Upper Shannon, Cavan, Monaghan and Inniscarra Reservoir. Vans crammed full of nets, rods, poles, bait and seat boxes pour off the ferries and head for the towns and villages that host these events; where anglers meet old friends and make new ones. This year, as with last year, there is a big ‘overseas angler’ shaped hole in the schedule, as anglers are reluctant to travel until this virus is behind us; we hope that this festival void will be filled by a full calendar again in 2022.
One such festival with a strong field of visiting anglers that did take place earlier in the month was the Dutch King’s Classic, where nearly 40 Dutch anglers adhered to strict Covid 19 protocols to participate in an excellent event in Leitrim’s lakelands. Event organisers are confident that they can double the numbers for next year, such was the success of the festival.
Pike fishing has picked up recently and the Lough Ree Angling Hub and Camlin and District Anglers held a hugely successful International Pike Classic on Lough Ree at the weekend. Nearly 160 anglers took part, but Polish duo Lukasz Sankiewicz and Peter Kaczmarek took top honours.
Inland Fisheries Ireland were delighted to be able to sponsor two anglers with disability to take part in the event aboard the Lough Ree Access For All boat; we believe that this is a first for the event, hopefully not a last.
In Waterville, a flood on the Inny meant that the fishing improved for a short while and some salmon were landed. On Currane, fly anglers managed both brown and sea trout on the drift. In Mayo, there were noticeably fewer anglers on the Moy this week and conditions were mixed for those that did fish; however, they still managed to land a reported 84 fish.
Trout anglers were quiet this week, although one report suggests that fishing might pick up on the loughs before the season is out; it was Lough Arrow that fished well, with some good trout responding to fresher conditions and falling to traditional wet fly methods.
The tuna fleet continue to catch, tag and release some massive bluefin under the CHART tagging programme. Fishing has been steady in Donegal Bay for quite a while now, and that has continued this week. Tuna were slower to appear in the south, but fishing has really picked up off the south coast since the beginning of the month, with Silver Dawn landing her biggest fish ever this week – a brute of 100+ inches. Not to be outdone, the Chloe Jay, Lady Patricia and Loch an Iasc all managed to tag good fish this week too.
Bluefin tuna estimated to weigh 377lbs is recovers alongside Chloe Jay
Closer to shore West Cork Bass had a stern tackle test with some thumping pollack and decent bass, which is more than can be said for anglers on the east coast, where bass have been hard to come by this week despite the efforts of good numbers of anglers fishing the Boyne estuary.
Lunker pollack
We usually like to award a Catch of the Week to an angler who catches an exceptional or unusual fish but this week we have an Anglers of the Week Award which we will award to brothers Jonasz Nowak (9) and Miłosz Nowak (6).
Each of the 31 river channels has been prioritised for enhancement works based on its hydromorphological condition, which considers how far the state of the river had departed from its natural condition.
The prioritisation follows extensive consultation with stakeholders, including local angling clubs, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Office of Public Works. In addition to hydromorphological surveys of the river channels, a review of the physical and ecological characteristics of the watercourses in the catchment were carried out, including water quality and fish status analysis. A high priority was given to channels with moderate and good water quality; as well as those with low fish status.
And now the weather…
Tonight will be mainly dry though drizzle may linger in some eastern counties. Some mist and fog developing, lows of 6°C to 13°C.
Saturday will be mostly cloudy in the east with some patchy rain, sunny spells further west with rain developing in the afternoon. Highs of 15°C to 18°C with light variable breezes. Outbreaks of rain overnight, turning heavy in places later. Lows 9°C to 11°C with light breezes.
Mostly cloudy Sunday with scattered outbreaks of showery rain giving way to late sunshine in places in the afternoon. Highs of 15°C to 18°C, in a light northwest breeze. Dry with clear spells overnight, lows 6°C to 10°C, in light northwest breezes. Some mist patches later.
Generally dry for early days of next week; followed by cool, wet and rather windy spells.
Bluefin boats in the northwest from Mullaghmore to Killybegs continued to catch dedcent numbers of tuna during the past week. See some of the catches below:

Bluefin tuna angling has become very popular and most boats are heavily booked for the remainder of this year’s tuna season. However, it is worth checking for free places if you fancy catching a fish of a lifetime… A list of all certified bluefin tuna boats is available here.
Tuna CHART (CatcHand Release Tagging) utilises authorised vessels to catch, tag and release Atlantic Bluefin Tuna for data collection purposes off the Irish coast. The programme, developed by Inland Fisheries Ireland and the Marine Institute in partnership with the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the Department for Environment, Climate and Communications, operated on a pilot basis in 2019 and 2020.
David Norman of West Cork Bass had a couple of kayaks sessions this week targeting bass and lunker pollack!
First off, David fished with Kuba Standera of Pirate Lures targeting bass from the surface. Conditions started out calm but got increasingly lumpy for the pair (but not unsafe). There were no big fish landed but a few mid size fished made for a very enjoyable trip with Kuba (who has a wealth of fishing knowledge!)
David, Kuba and bass!
The next session was a solo trip targeting big pollack on the fly. David wanted to test out his #12 fly rod and test it he did, with some real lunkers.
A week of two halves with the first part of week having no water and the latter part of week too much water. Water levels at the start of the week at Ballylahan Bridge were 0.297m and with a surprise yellow rain warning mid-week water levels peaked at 1.889m by Thursday and then levelled off to 0.678m on Sunday night. Water temperatures remained around the same at 12˚ to 13˚Celsius throughout the system. Most fisheries in the Moy catchment remarked about the lack of anglers active. Still, 84 salmon were recorded caught with a good percentage of these released again. Only two weeks are now left in the angling calendar year to get some last casts for the year.
Sligo angler Paul Kelly caught this fine 15 lbs salmon on a spoon just downstream of the Gub on East Mayo Waters. The fish was released immediately afterwards
Reports were as follows:
Ballina Salmon Anglers reported 6 grilse caught for the week.
Mount Falcon Fishery reported 11 salmon for the week, the best of which weighed 7 lbs.
Knockmore Salmon Anglers produced only one salmon as angling activity was very low.
Attymass Anglers had only one fish too for the week.
Coolcronan Fishery reported 3 salmon caught for the week, all caught on the prawn.
Byrne’s Fishery reported 4 salmon, all caught on the prawn.
Armstrong’s Fishery reported 5 salmon for the week.
Gannon’s Fishery produced 3 small grilse for the week.
Foxford Fishery reported 4 salmon.
Foxford Salmon Anglers reported 23 salmon from their waters.
Reports suggest that Foxford Town Beat returned at least 2 salmon for the week.
Reports from Cloongee Fishery reveal that 3 salmon were caught with 2 returned.
East Mayo Anglers produced 18 grilse with 11 of these released.
The fresher weather improved trout fishing slightly on Lough Arrow over the past few days. Trout seemed to be more active and traditional wet flies worked best. Local angler, Paul Colreavy rose four fish yesterday evening landing two at 1.75 lbs. each. Elsewhere, Eddie Harte had a nice trout of 3 lbs.

Pierre Bronsgeest reports on a successful King’s Classic 2021 from earlier in the month:
The King’s Classic was a success in every way. After two years of preparation, trade fairs, open days and other promotions, it became reality. With all precautions due to Covid-19 and strict regulations in Ireland, everything went smoothly in the end.
A big plus was the journey via ferry from Cherbourg directly to Dublin. The journey involved excellent roads to Cherbourg (approximately 7 hours drive), where the ferry to Ireland leaves at 4.30pm. You drink and eat on board, get a good night’s sleep and the next morning after breakfast you drive into Dublin at 10:45 AM. So easy! A comfortable journey and then, in Ireland, the weather was glorious. Unusually warm by Irish standards. And the weather remained beautiful, without a drop of rain. Not so good for fishing, but luckily we got some more clouds and a little wind during competition week.
Prior to this, the memorial ‘Lol’ Higgins was fished on the same sectors as the King’s Classic. Lawrence ‘Lol’ Higgins was an English match angler who has fished the KOC matches from the start. He was a welcome fisherman, with a lot of humor and a lot of knowledge of fishing. After his death, Pascal van de Venne and Pierre Bronsgeest came up with the idea to fish a memorial. This was immediately welcomed by the participants and by Henk van der Kooi of BBI-travel.
The widow of ‘Lol’, Christine Higgins was also present, as was her son Andrew Higgins with his family. Emotional, but beautiful.
Then the memorial match. On Sunday 29 August, 35 participants fished in four sectors. Fish were caught everywhere, but the Rocks sector scored the best. There Simon Willsmore managed to catch 17,500 grams and thus write the memorial to his name. He received the cup from Christine Higgins. In addition, the sector price is € 100, a fishing platform from Pascal van de Venne and a bottle of Jameson.
Monday, August 29, 2021, a memorable day. Finally, after two years of hard work, there was the draw in the Commercial Hotel, with face masks, keep your distance, but grab your number and fish. The mood, the atmosphere was immediately in it. Under sunny conditions on to sectors A = Deeps, B = Connelly’s, C = The Rocks and D = Brackley/Prospect.
The Rocks
Four beautiful sectors that got off to a slow start. The disappearance of the wind, the high temperatures 23-24 degrees were the reasons for this slow start. That was not the case for the newly added sector The Rocks, part of lough Scur.
There it was a battle with the pole, at least if you can still call using two sections the pole! That was the rod length with which Darius Karaliunas managed to catch over 400 fish! Rien Verhoeckx fished with four pieces and also did well. On the other side of the sector there was a battle between Michel Diepstraten and Deimante Karaliunas, also with the pole! The Rocks was won with 23,900 grams by Darius Karaliunas who also became the day winner. Second Rien Verhoeckx 18,150 grams, Third Deimante Karaliunas 16,350 grams and Michel Diepstraten with 14,400 grams.
The other sectors
As said, a difficult start. Particularly on sector A = Deeps, which does not mean less exciting. Pascal van der Venne won here with 4,300 grams. Sector B = Connolly’s had a reasonable start, Andre Multem won there with 14,250 grams. On sector D = Brackley Prospect it was Leo Koot, Simon Willsmore and Willemd van der Helm. Here they only fished with the feeder and Willem van der Helm managed to take advantage of that with the victory, he became first with 11,800 grams. Second, Leo Koot with 11,040 grams and third, Simon Willsmore.
The Multem Brothers
The second day immediately started with a fratricidal battle, again on The Rocks. Willem Multem at number 9 and on the other side Andre Multem at number 2. At number 6 was Charlie Richards, the 16 year old Irish talent from Ballinamore. However, he could not prevent Willem and Andre from taking a lead, especially Willem Multem. Andre didn’t have it too good in the beginning catching roach that were too small and too few in between. That was good for Willem. With over 300 fish he managed to catch 23,500 grams. Charlie Richards did not get further than a third place with 11,250 grams. The decisive weight came from swim number 2. Andre Multem caught 27,300 grams. He won the sector and also the daily prize.
The other sectors performed better than the previous day. In sector A = Deeps Willem van der Helm won with 8,100 grams and Leo Koot was second with 6,020 grams.
Sector B = Connolly’s was producing on all pegs. Ron Stoorvogel won here with 15,500 grams. Martijn Kroes was second here with 14,750 grams.
In the sector D = Brackley/Prospect, Michel Diepstraten took the win with 14,640 grams. Second was Brian Declerck with 11.620 grams.
Charlie wins the section
As mentioned, 16-year-old talent Charlie Richards is one to keep an eye on. He fished for the sector Brackley Prospect on day 3 and immediately took control of the sector. He fished more than 40 yards with the feeder and left no doubt as to who would take the industry profits. Charlie won with 20,100 grams. Second was Piet van Lieshout with 14,100 grams. Meritorious third Sammy Driesen with 12,800 grams.
The other sectors scored slightly less on average on this third day. Sector A = Deeps in particular had a hard time. Michiel Diepstraten managed to take the sector gain with 6,600 grams and scored another point, which gave him the prospect of a good position. Second was Darius Karaliunas with 5,100 grams.
Connolly’s was dominated by Willem van der Helm who managed to catch some nice bream and hybrids with the feeder. He caught 21,500 grams, enough for the sector profit and the daily profit. This marked the third sector win in a row for Van der Helm. Only 3 points. Leo Koot right next to him was second with 18,500 grams. Niels der Kinderen was third here with 17,250 grams. The The Rocks sector had a decent day with fishing across the trade. The final battle was between Dick Ekkelenkamp and Tom Sexton. The sympathetic Englishman was fiddling with three different rod distances. Dick was immediately with four sections at the right distance and at a good pace. He still had to lose to the Englishman who managed to find his rhythm and became first with 17,200 grams. Dick had to make do with 200 grams less at 17,000 grams.
Finale
This last day there were three more anglers with a view to the overall victory. Willem van der Helm, André Multem and Michel Diepstraten. They could still finish on three points because the worst result is dropped. So all eyes on this threesome and a sideways eye on the battle for places 4 to 9, important for the final score in the standings. If the top three make a mistake, there are six who are happy to climb onto the podium.
Willem van der Helm is in good shape! After all, he already has three points and with the knowledge that the worst result of the four days is dropped, he must again score a first place. If not, he must hope that his overall weight is sufficient to win.
His competitors, Andre Multem, are in sector A Deeps, Michel Diepstraten in sector B Connelly’s and a dangerous outsider, friend and travel companion Leo Koot in the same sector where he fishes himself, Sector C The Rocks.
Michel Diepstraten draws number 10 on Connelly’s, the winning number of the previous day! He gets off to a good start and immediately catches nice fish, hybrid and roach. Andre Multem at number 6 on Deeps is less happy. It doesn’t go the way he planned, catches fish, misses etc. Not a nice rhythm. That is certainly possible with Martijn Snijders and with Willem Multem! Fratricide? Back to The Rocks where Leo Koot has a kickstart and catches small hybrid and roach one after the other with the pole at a good pace. Willem van der Helm, fishing for number 1, the ideal number for the fixed pole! So cat in the cup. That would be different.
Back to sector Brackley/Prospect, where it was exciting between Martijn Kroes, Jeroen Gruys and Dick Ekkelenkamp to reach the first nine. It was Martijn who became first with 19,440 grams. Jeroen Gruys was second with 12,720 grams and third Dick Ekkelenkamp with 12,400 grams.
Quickly to Connelly’s, there Michel Diepstraten manages to catch fish until the final signal and his sector wins with 14,250 grams. Second is Sandy Denduyver with 12,000 grams.
On to sector A Deeps. How is Andre Multem? He did catch some fish, but not enough. It has become a battle between Willem Multem and Martijn Snijders. Snijders wins with 7,550 grams, Willem second with 7,500 grams. Andre gets eight points and that makes the podium inaccessible. Then to the decision on The Rocks! Leo Koot never stopped for a moment. Like a well-oiled machine, he is fishing for profit in the sector with 25,500 grams, also good for the day’s victory. Willem van der Helm is second with 18,600 grams and Simon Willsmore third with 16,800 grams.
Willem van der Helm has three points and 41,400 grams! Enough for the final victory! Michel Diepstraten also has 3 points but less weight. He is second with 3 points and 35,490 grams. Leo Koot jumps to the podium and is third with 5 points and 55,040 grams.
