Double delight for Gal (again) at Edenderry festival

The Edenderry Coarse Angling Club held its yearly festival on the Grand Canal last week. The festival is split into two parts, with a two-day competition and a three-day competition running on alternate days. The event attracts some of the best canal anglers in Ireland and the UK and is a long-standing event on the Irish coarse angling calendar.

As can be the case on the Grand Canal, the bright sunshine at this time of year, can make for tricky fishing conditions. Such was the situation presented to anglers for the opening match, when the roach and bream were difficult to tempt and anglers relied on tench to make up the numbers, with Dave Walmsley bagging 13lb 9oz to take the win.

Tench were a mainstay in catches on Day 1

Day 2 of the festival saw some cloud cover, which gave anglers a bit of hope that bites would be forthcoming, but that wasn’t really the case, and anglers struggled to make double figures, which made Tony Richardson’s winning bag of 16lb 6oz all the more impressive.

A nice mixed bag from Day 2

On Day 3, anglers found that the colour had dropped out of the canal, making conditions even trickier and again, double-figure bags were a rarity. James Foley took the top bag on the day with 15lb 2oz.

A nice bit of bronze from Day 3

Day 4 saw the conclusion of the 2-day part of the festival, and Gal Charnock followed up his win in the event last year with a combined bag of 27lb 2oz. Top six in the 20day event were:

1. Gal Charnock 27-02
2. Jeff Stirrat 20-00
3. Peter Keenan 19-14
4. Tony Richardson 15-10
5. Paul Holding 15-07
6. Peter Nolan 14-15.
Gal gallops ahead on Day 4

Day 5 saw the last session of the 3-day event and the final day of the festival. The fishing during the week had been pretty tight, leaving anglers tightly packed in the rankings, so it was all to play for on the last session. Jeff Stirrat put in a strong effort, bagging him the top weight on the day with 15lb 12oz. But Gal Charnock came in second on the day with 9lb 5oz, and that was enough to nudge him to the top of the leaderboard for the 3-day event with a combined total of 31lb 11oz. Top 5 placings in the 3-day event were:

1. Gal Charnock 31-11
2. Tony Richardson 29-01
3. Jeff Stirrat 28-08
4. John Easton 26-12
5. Tommy Fairhurst 22-10
Fine double-figure bag from Day 5
So, just like last year, Gal Charnock backed up his win in the 2-day, with a win in the 3-day, making him the undisputed king of the canal at Edenderry.

American and Canadian anglers get good fishing on the Maigue at Adare

Patti and Bill fishing at Adare
Patti and Bill fishing at Adare with Celtic Angling

Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling reports from the Maigue:

Florida based Bill and Patti Martin are on a 45th wedding anniversary celebration break in Ireland, a very active couple, they teed off at Ballybunion golf club on Monday just after 8am, then on to Adare and after quickly booking into the Dunraven Arms met me for a late afternoon session on the Maigue at 3pm. They were refreshingly honest in their admission of beginner status and were a pleasure to guide, the sun shone for them and the trout literally pulled together to make their fishing in Adare memorable, my photos tell the story.

On Wednesday last week, New Brunswick Canadian Douglas French joined me on the River Maigue at Adare, and whilst he’s fished for salmon back home, he never fly-fished for brown trout. With summer levels now a feature and weeds starting to show it’s really no longer practical to fish traditional wet-fly across and downriver. Fly-fishing down is entry-level fishing and comparatively easy, high-summer fly-fishing upstream in low, clear, weeded waters and doing so with dry-fly to ultra-shy wild brown trout in heavily overgrown surrounds is on a different scale entirely. We got around the low water by timing our wet-fly session to begin as the backwater at Adare was ebbing, this afforded us 2hrs+ of nice water and our rookie trouter Doug took full advantage. He had up to 10 fish, two very nice takeable ones, lost as many more and was thrilled with his day. All fish carefully released.

Avonmore River the prefect training ground for youth team

Great conditions on the Avonmore

Peter is back with a weekly round up from Piscari-Fly…

How’s The Fishing?

Piscari-fly training this years Irish Youth Team heading to Czech Republic. We had a fabulous day on the Avonmore River with a great team of young lads on Saturday.

We started in the club rooms where we had a presentation for the youths on fishing world championships and how to prepare for them. Following this then we moved to the river where we set up some beats for the youths and they got to fish 2 1 hour sessions with a controller to help them gain valuable experience in what its like to be in a championship setting.

Following on from a review session at the end, everyone headed home very happy. Peter will be travelling with the youth team in August. Wishing them all the very best of luck in the World Championships in August.

Fishing was very good on the day, river was in perfect condition, plenty of free rising trout with lots of hatches diring the day. Big thanks to Rathdrum Trout Anglers for their fantastic water, which is a replica of the Famous Devil Stones, one of their main sectors in the Czech Republic.

The All-Ireland Rivers were meant to be held this weekend but looks like it will definitely be cancelled following a fish kill in Munster.

“Thousands of fish and eels have been wiped out on a pivotal Munster fishery following a suspected chemical spill from a state-owned water treatment plant. Investigations into the kill are underway with several state bodies involved. It is feared that at least 5,000 fish, including salmon, trout, and lamprey were killed along a 4km stretch of the Allow, in north Cork, an important tributary of the Blackwater.” Irish Examiner 10/6/24

Irish Angling Update 🎣 07 June 2024

sea trout

Despite the much heralded start of summer it’s been a pretty dull week for those in the northwest where sunshine was well below average – just a paltry 6 hours over 7 days! It was brighter in the south west, even a bit above the norm in some parts. Temperatures were pretty average, and although it was warm on Saturday, it has become much cooler since. Breezes were fresh at times but nothing excessive. Overall, it was a good enough week for anglers, but it appears a lot of us did not make it out fishing over the long weekend…

Alex arrived from the UK this morning and did not take her long to show the men at Blackwater Trout and Salmon Fishery how it's done

Salmon anglers did well on the Moy last week as water levels dropped over 1m. There were a number of double figure salmon caught and the grilse started to run. A total catch of one hundred and twenty-six salmon was reported for the week. Fishing on the Galway Weir was not as good as conditions allowed for last month and just 10 fish were caught. Already this month, there are signs the grilse run is underway, and expectations are high again. Anglers in Killarney reported 4 salmon from Lough Leane averaging 5lb, and 4 from the Laune averaging 8lb. Meanwhile, anglers on Lough Currane had no fish to report last week despite all efforts. There was better news from the Munster Blackwater, where fishing is said to be steadily improving. For podcast listeners, the latest episode of Ireland on the Fly focuses on the crisis affecting the Atlantic salmon. Finally for salmon anglers, here is the first reminder to those who purchased 1 day and 21 day licences that have already expired – it’s time to return your unused tags, logbook and catch record.

Beautiful Brown Trout from the Nore

Trout anglers had some really exciting fishing on the Nore and tributaries over the weekend. All methods were producing fish, traditional wetfly, purist dryfly and modern nymphs all did the business. The Dodder hosted the Leinster Rivers Qualifiers last week. There were prolific hatches of fly, including various olives and iron blue duns in particular, and 166 trout over 18cm were caught in this catch-and-release event. Since the re-opening the Ballinlough Fishery last month, 35 anglers caught 56 rainbow trout and 14 brown trout. Permits are available online.

pike
A new PB for Senan Stanley, 115cm

A French and Belgian angler fishing together in Longford had the trip their lives with Kevin Lyons catching loads of pike to 102cm over their stay. Whitewood PAC held a 2-day float tube competition on the Shannon system at the weekend where an impressive 250 pike were caught and released. Youtuber Senan Stanley fished with Brian Connaughton of Wildhunter on Saturday and caught his PB of 115cm – Catch of the Week. The pair also had some great dropshot fishing for perch. Senan followed this up with a great day on Derg guiding a couple of Limerick anglers where one, Jamie, caught his PB. Also out was Paul Bourke, whose anglers also enjoyed some fine fishing on the lake.

Last year, Lurgan Coarse Angling Club exceeded all expectations and won the World Feeder Club Championships on home ground at Lough Muckno. This year, they travelled to Portugal to defend their title and won Silver away. A huge result. In other international news the VDE Baggers held a fundraiser last weekend for their upcoming trip to Slovenia to fish the World Club Float Championships. The event was fished on the Blackwater and winner on the day was Raimondas with 26kg, and £400 was raised for the team.

The Killybegs Mariners had a great mix of fishing last week between longest flattie competitions, species hunting and a boat trip. You can read all about their adventures here, Killybegs Mariners enjoy great fishing from shore and boat! A family fishing with charter skipper John Fleming on Galway Bay enjoyed stunning weather and hectic fishing. There was more family fishing with Wicklow Charters and regular anglers from Cork and the Netherlands had some good fishing for tope, rays and more.

And now the weather…

As we go to press, there are Marine Warnings in place for small boats in the west, northwest and north over the next three days. Saturday is to start with sunny spells and well scattered showers. It should be dry by late morning with good spells of sunshine developing with any showers limited to northern fringes. Feeling pleasantly mild in the afternoon sunshine. Highest temperatures of 13 to 19°C, warmest across southeast counties, all in a moderate northwesterly wind that will continue blowing through Sunday. Sunday will be cloudy with patchy rain and drizzle pushing into the west and northwest on Sunday morning. This will eventually extend eastwards but it will be mostly dry in the south and southeast. A cooler day with with highest temperatures of 11 to 14°C, maybe a couple of degrees warmer in the south. Looks like a great weekend for anglers.

Don’t forget to check the forecast before heading off and if you’re going to sea, check the tides.

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Plenty of fish on Galway Bay reefs

John Fleming had a good crew out at the weekend and they enjoyed some stunning weather on the bay. Fishing was hectic at times, with plenty of mackerel around, wrasse, coalfish and some nice pollack. Most were returned but the lads brought a few fillets home for the bbq. Hard to blame them!

Sunday another group had a good bit of sport again, including plenty of pollack, ling, wrasse, pouting and loads of mackerel. They tried a couple of hours at anchor for tope but no joy unfortunately.

Great reef fishing in West Clare on the Clare Dragoon

A cracking ling on the reefs

Skipper Luke Aston had a new group in for a week this week. On their first day they hit the reefs and found coalfish in abundance.

The next day they headed north from Loop Head. Mackerel in good bunbers were found at the Loop, as Luke says “They were the more “normal” summer mackerel. All spring they have been very big.
“On the reefs north we had a better sign of Pollack and less Coalfish. Numbers were not as big but it was steady enough. Also some fine Spurdog’s to the boat with one well over specimen size.”

Some more reef fishing followed a quiet day in the estuary, with some lovely fish recorded, and a nice mix of species. There was also a cracking ling boated, well into double figures.
