Ireland on the Fly talks water quality and what it means for angling

water quality

Last week saw the release of the EPA’s Water Quality report which provides an update on the water quality of Ireland’s rivers, lakes, estuaries, coastal, and groundwaters for 2022.

With nitrogen levels increasing in rivers, what will it mean for our fishing?

The main headline from it was the fact that there has been no improvement in water quality of rivers or lakes with nitrogen levels increasing in rivers overall and to find out more, this week’s Ireland on the Fly podcast spoke to Mary Gurrie, Programme Manager with the EPA.

There has been a steady decline since 2012 she told Daire & Tom, which has been somewhat arrested in the last two years, however, farming and waste water are the key issues in the problem of water quality which must be addressed in the coming years.

Irish angling Update – 23 June 2023

While the hotter and sunnier than normal weather continued all last week, it was frequently interrupted by impressive displays of thunder and lightning. There was a lot of rain, but so localised that it did little to improve angling in most places and led to severe flooding where the water was not wanted. Not surprisingly, the majority of our reports this week are from the shore, or further out to sea, as anglers on our lakes and rivers struggled with bright days and low water conditions.

It was a quiet week for salmon anglers as low water and bright sunshine combined with thundery conditions. The Moy saw some salmon caught despite the unsuitable conditions and there was some fine sea trout fishing reported on the estuary, but elsewhere there was little to report.

Mick and his savage trout – Catch of the Week

The conditions were not best suited to trout anglers on our rivers or lakes either. Few were minded to hit Lough Conn or Cullin, and not many fish were reported for the week. On Lough Ree, a day of zero action was rescued by a single savage take which saw a super trout landed, but then the heavens suddenly opened, and it was all off the lake, and fast. There was just enough time to photo and release the 74cm trout before the weather hit. It makes a great Catch of the Week. In Co. Limerick, the Maigue and Deel did well from the rain, and both rivers were well up and coloured, but still fishable and a visiting angler from the USA had good sport fishing with Paddy Dunworth of Celtic Angling. Finally, we have a review of the Mayfly season on Lough Arrow from Jackie Mahon.

This bream helped Sid to the top of the leaderboard

The River Barrow fished well for the Athy Anglers who enjoyed catching some great tench, bream and hybrids in the second leg of their Summer League. Royal Enfield Coarse Angling Club held a two-day festival on the Royal Canal recently. Fishing was tough, particularly on day one. Congratulations to Sid Baldock from Leigh in the UK for toughing it out to take the win. Congratulations also go to Mark Theedom for his second day win at the Roslea Lakes festival. His catch of 17kg saw him weigh in over 26kg overall to win the 2-day event.

Good tope fishing was had off Wicklow

Two brothers from The Netherlands fishing with Wicklow Boat Charters enjoyed some top class tope fishing recently including a specimen. South Shore Sea Angling Club fished the latest round of their master angler at a Wicklow venue. The night-time event saw fish being caught from the get-go.  The Irish Kayak Angling Club recently held the second leg of their All-Ireland Kayak Angling Championships in Cahore, Co. Wexford. Tope also featured in their catches and a super time was had by all. Staying in Wexford the Menapia club had excellent wrasse fishing with the best catches coming from rocky ground and kelp beds. West Cork and district SAC also fished a night competition last week. They were on a Kinsale beach and had to make the most of the blustery conditions, but some bass, flounder and more showed up. Before the winds picked up David Norman was enjoying good bass fishing from the Kayak in West Cork, as water temperatures climbed in the area. Anglers on bigger boats are also doing well as the increased water temperatures have seen blue sharks, and all sorts of other marine visitors flock to the waters in the area. Bass fishing in Kerry is also reported to have picked up in the last couple of weeks. Guests at Thatch Cottage near Caherciveen have been enjoying great fishing with bass to 73cm landed.

Ballan Wrasse
Ballan wrasse – one of our most colourful fish

Charter boats fishing off the Clare coast have seen some great mixed fishing reported by the Clare Dragoon and anglers on Lady Gwen have also made the most superb weather and fishing on offer. Skipper John Brittain out of Clifden fished with a trio who have been visiting him since the early 1990s. They had great results, particularly over the deeper marks where well-fed pollack and cod were caught. Good pollack also featured in catches for anglers on board Ewings Sea Angling and Boat Charters fishing out of Rosses Point. Killybegs Mariners have been mixing it up with a wide range of species from shore and boat. From the shore, catches included smoothhounds, from the boats they had 18 species on Deep Blue and 15 species on Killybegs Fishing Trips.

And now the weather…

Going into the weekend we have a small boats warning on all coasts, and further warnings tomorrow and Sunday as Southerly and then Westerly winds will reach force 6 or higher. The weather is to stay warm, but unsettled with scattered showers. The rain will become more persistent on Monday and it will be a cooler day. Tuesday will see temperatures return to the low 20s and it should be mostly dry. Not a great forecast for anglers hoping to go afloat but there’s plenty of fishing to be done all the same…

Safe fishing to all and tight lines, especially here in Ireland.

Silver Dawn skipper Dave Edwards reports on the recent fishing down in West Cork…

14 June: Fishing has been good inshore over the last few days with plenty of good Pollack and many other species showing. Mario had a superb, specimen sized Pouting amongst his catch yesterday.

Offshore shark fishing is also plenty of Blues coming to Silver Dawn.

The offshore wrecks were more difficult on our last visit as red algae was thick 50 miles south, resulting in smaller than usual catches. There was one specimen Ling landed, a 1.31 metres beauty and the crew worked hard to ensure a few more decent fish came up from the depths.

Hopefully the algae doesn’t build and spread inshore over the coming weeks.

12 June: A brilliant day, catching and releasing Blue Sharks. The highlight for me was the superb wildlife offshore this afternoon. A brief Humpback along with Minkes, Bottlenose Dolphins and Risso’s Dolphins was all the more amazing, when a pair of notoriously shy, deep water, Risso’s, stayed alongside Silver Dawn for several hours while approximately 20 more fed within sight of us.

Ewings Sea Angling and Boat Charters fishing out of Rosses Point, Co. Sligo report some great light tackle pollack fishing with fish up to 8 lbs.

Nice Smooth-hounds for Gavin and good mixed fishing for Mariners Crew in Donegal Bay

Gavin Dorrian with a Donegal Bay Smooth-hound

Killybegs Mariners member Gavin Dorrian enjoyed some great shore action for smooth-hounds during the week. Great to see them so early in the year with the good weather and crab on the ground.

Earlier in the week, the Mariners crew had some great mixed fishing aboard Adrian Molloy’s “Deep Blue”. A total of 18 species were caught on the day including a new club boat record tub gurnard of 35cm for Gavin.

    Tub Gurnard

Previously, some Mariners members were out with Killybegs Fishing Trips and managed to catch a total of 15 species. However, the highlight of the day was a fantastic ling of 97cm for Ryan Mc Ginley.

Double Dutch + Tons of Tope = Sore Arms in Wicklow

    qrf

Two brothers from The Netherlands, Henk and Wim Theulings, have been having a fine time of it with the tope in Wicklow Bay recently. The Dutch duo are regular visitors to Kit Dunne of Wicklow Boat Charters, and they timed this year’s visit to perfection to take advantage of some great tope fishing, including a specimen for Wim. They were left with sore arms at the end of their week’s fishing and I’m sure they’ll be back for more next year.

Wim with one of his tope

Kit says that there have been plenty of tope around since the start of May and smooth hounds, huss and ray have also featured regularly for anglers fishing with him.

Warm weather not enticing many anglers out on Loughs Conn & Cullin

    Peter Roche’s trout before release

Osgur Grieve reports from Loughs Conn & Cullin…

    Angling Report week ending 18/06/23

There were very few angling reports from Conn and Cullin last week with the warm weather not enticing many anglers out on the lake. Peter Roche threw a line on Lough Conn on Friday 16th and released a 12 ½ inch trout from around Chain Island using a Raymond. There were reports of the odd Mayfly about but the trout were disinterested with the dry fly.

Billy Murphy and a friend fished wets for 2 hours on Sunday at Massbrook and Billy released 1 trout of 10 inches to a Mayfly Muddler.  They both rose a few more before the weather turned and they headed for home.

Fishing on River Moy still slow but some nice sea trout reported from the estuary

    The River Moy in Foxford
    Tough conditions on the Moy

Osgur Grieve reports from the River Moy…

    Angling Report week ending 18/06/23

The River Moy experienced low water conditions for most of the week. Despite this some fisheries fared well despite the warm conditions. A small rise in water levels on Sunday 18th from 0.2m to 0.35m at Ballylahan Bridge brought some relief for anglers.

The number of fisheries along the Moy that reported catches last week increased which may be attributed to the beginning of the grilse run and increased angling effort.

The Moy Fishery remained closed for the week due to elevated water temperatures.

Knockmore Salmon Anglers reported 1 grilse weighing 4 lbs.

Coolcronan Fishery reported 1 salmon caught.

Byrne’s Fishery reported 7 salmon caught using worm or prawn.

Armstrong Fishery reported 4 salmon caught using bubble and fly.

Foxford Salmon Anglers reported 49 salmon caught for the week. Successful methods included the prawn and bubble and fly.

There were local reports from the Foxford Rocks Fishery of 12 salmon caught for the week.

The Foxford Fishery reported 25 salmon caught for the week, most of which were grilse.

Reports from Cloongee Fishery say that 9 salmon for the week ranging from 3 – 5 lbs.

East Mayo Anglers reported 27 salmon for the week, 12 of which were released. They ranged in weight from 2 lbs. to 8 lbs. and were caught on a variety of methods including fly, worm and spinner.

Sea trout anglers fishing the Moy Estuary did quite well during the week with some nice fish caught mainly on sandeel or mackerel strip.
