Damien Culliney of Anglers Paradise had French anglers Sebastian and Emanuel out pike fishing for three days last week…
Had Sebastian and Emanuel over from France last week. They are no strangers to Ireland and are regular visitors for pike fishing in the north east. They had always wanted to fish the west coast though, especially the infamous Lough Derg. So we made a long weekend of it and fished Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Lough Derg didn’t disappoint and there was some tremendous fish and fishing had. The pair averaged nearly 10 fish a day, and many of these were really good quality 100cm plus pike. We only met one fish that was not well recovered from spawning at the end of spring. Maybe she had spawned late, as the other fish had clearly fattened up on the abundant roach and other baitfish in the lake.

We sent them back to France very happy anglers who told us this was their best fishing holiday in Ireland so far!

Lough Owel is a great place to bring a novice angler has been producing the goods for a few anglers over the last couple of weeks. Cousins Seamus McGuinness and Ben McLachlan were fishing on Lough Owel last week and they caught some lovely trout. Ben’s catches were a bit more special as they were his first trout ever. All the fish caught were sportingly released.

Lough Owel has plenty to offer more experienced anglers too, there is a good range of hatches through the trout season to keep any fly angler on his toes.
Cormac Walsh of the Lure Fishing Podcast reports that he spent the week chasing the flocks of birds up and down the shoreline in the hope of finding bass feeding on the sprats close enough to the shore to get a cast at. Eventually, with a stroke of luck he found himself in the right place at the right time.
The shoal of bass feeding hard on sprats hit the shore just before dark. A fantastic sight and some epic fishing for Cormac. Evenings like that don’t happen very often and he reckons it was great to see such numbers of bass around. Roll on the big tides next week…
This report from the organisers of the Perch Master League 2024:
Today we had 3rd Leg of our league on a section of a river in Co Carlow, a good river when conditions are right for fishing and holds a good stock of perch. But today conditions were far from good for predator fish such as Perch, but anglers stick to the plan and managed to catch some fine conditioned Perch!
One scorching day on the river and most of the anglers “struggled” to catch perch to size that counted.
After the picture’s and videos were checked we had our winners for this leg.
First place – Tomek Narolski
Second place – David Dennis
Third place – Ben Moore
Longest Perch – Ben More
For the prize giving X Zone Lures had some lures for Top 3 also they received extra lures from Westin Fishing and Lucky John.
Well done to everyone taking part on this leg and we do some preparation for next leg in June! Well done to winners, Massive Thank You to our sponsors.
Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has today opened the third draw for anglers wishing to catch and keep salmon from Kerry’s Roughty River catchment.
‘Brown tag’ regulations came into force on the river from March 15th, 2024, and will remain in place until September 30th 2024, when the salmon fishing season ends.
Commenting on the requirements, Sean Long South-Western River Basin District Director at IFI, stated:
“The numbers of wild Atlantic salmon returning to our rivers is declining. The risk of over-fishing puts stocks in further jeopardy.Brown tag measures for salmon and sea trout are required on the Roughty River to conserve stocks and avoid accidental over-harvesting. “Where there is a modest harvestable surplus with a risk of over exploitation, this brown gill tag system is introduced to closely monitor the angling quotas.”
An increased total of 136 brown tags will be available and are being distributed to anglers with a valid rod licence via four draws throughout the 2024 angling season.
Half of the originally available 96 brown tags have been issued to date.
A total of 64 brown tags will be selected through the online lottery on June 12th 2024.
The measures are part of the Wild Salmon and Sea Trout Tagging Scheme (Amendment) Regulations 2023, recently signed into law by the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan, TD.
Anglers interested in entering the June 12th draw can apply through IFI’s online link between today, May 20th, and midnight June 9th 2024, only.
Successful anglers who receive the tags, via the lottery system, place them on the fish – along with a blue tag as proof it was lawfully caught and may be retained for private use.
Anglers not allocated a brown tag are permitted to fish for salmon on a catch-and-release basis on the Roughty River catchment, where the salmon is returned safely to the same waterbody.
Anglers must use catch-and-release methods only, involving single or double barbless hooks. Use of worms as bait is not permitted.
Full application details are available by phoning IFI’s Macroom office on (026) 41221, or by emailing [email protected]
Angler Peter Boland sent us in this report of a great shore-caught 163cm Tope:
I was fishing on Donaghmore Strand, Co. Wexford last Sat, May 11th, in absolutely flat, calm conditions with my friend Brian Healy. He threw out a tope bait and managed to land one of 142cm at about 7.30 p.m. on a squid bait, so I decided to try for one as well. I set up using an up-and-over rig with a wire trace attached to an 8/0 barbless circular hook, a 5-ounce weight and squid as bait. I cast about 70 yards out, and 10 minutes later, the rod bent over. It took me about 10 or 12 minutes to land her although it felt longer. Got her into the margins were we unhooked her. I got a quick photo and then measured her at 163cm. The fish was tagged…Scottish fisheries..Tagshark.com 8165. Judging by her belly, she seemed to be pregnant. Amazing fish.

Inniscarra Lake held a one-day warm-up to their May back-to-back festivals on Saturday. The Hogan’s Open, sponsored by Coachford’s Oaklands B&B, saw 28 anglers fish a match featuring two sections on the Coachford Greenway, Cably Buoys and Turtle Bay and a section at the Garden Centre.
The water had risen a few feet in previous days, but it didn’t seem to affect the fishing. Match winner Niall McKitterick from County Cavan reports that the fishing started off slowly at the Garden Centre, but he finished with 131 hybrids and a few skimmers for 27kgs 100grms on the whip. Portlaoise angler Gavin Walsh finished just behind for second position with 26.820kg from the Cable Buoys section of the Greenway. In 3rd place was regular overseas visitor John Fletcher, 23.860kg, followed by Gary Doyle 20.190kg and Jeff Grant in 5th with 18.410kg.
Temperatures have been quite pleasant over the past week, remaining a few degrees higher than the norm for mid-May. In other regards, the weather has been pretty average, with average rain and average sunshine levels across most of the country. However, one recent meteorological event was far from ordinary, as last Friday night saw parts of the country bathed in the spectral light of the Aurora Borealis. The event was best appreciated in areas without light pollution, and what better place than on an island in the middle of a large Irish lake? That is exactly where Gavin O’Brien was lucky to be when he captured this stunning photo of his angling boat moored on Inchagoill with the Northern Lights as a backdrop. He wasn’t the only angler abroad that night either, as a couple of miles to the south, angler Paul Fingleton was enjoying a similar spectacle from his camp on Urkaun Beg. What a night to be out under the stars…
To sea angling now, and many sea angling clubs around the coast are fishing their way through their Master Angler series. On the east coast, South Shore SAC were back at Kilcoole for the latest round of their MA. Luckily, it fished better than the previous trip there, and Ciaran Fogarty won the round and landed a fine bass while doing so. On the west coast, Galway Bay SAC headed to the Clare coast for the latest leg of their MA, and bass featured in the catch for the winner there too, as Tom Keal landed a bass and some flounder to take the win. Cobh SAC went on the water for the second leg of their MA, as they fished Cork Harbour, landing plenty of good pollack, and a super specimen bullhuss for young angler Jay O’Halloran, which wins this week’s Catch of the Week.
The weather looks to be in a settled pattern over the next few days and Friday will be mostly dry, with some sunny spells and temperatures reaching the low twenties in places. The evening will see some showers in the midlands which will die out overnight. Saturday will also be mostly dry with a mix of cloud and sun, with temperatures between 15°C and 21°C. Sunday will follow the same pattern of dry weather with a couple of showers, while Monday will see a bit more sun and slightly higher temperatures.
